I agree that it was an inappropriate shirt for that venue, or perhaps any venue. However, you are making a big assumtion that any kid or your specific kid at dirt track race reads or pays attention to any writing on a tee shir unless it is pointed out by an adult. The kids are primarily bombarded by the entire atmosphere of lights, noise, dust, crownd, cars, announcers, family, friends, etc to even notice "bad" words on a tee shirt.
If they do notice, that is aperfect time for the "don't be that guy" conversation and move on. Kids will hear all kinds of words from peers and adults that are frowned upom language and it is up to the parents and family to put the values that they exhibit instilled into those children.
As for the track, it is certainly a good idea to discourage those types of displays, but it is a form of free speech and it needs to be protected. Sorry, if you don't agree on the free speech part, I'm not trying to start a political argument, so please do not respond to that part of my comment.

In my non-response to your comments about the F-word being free speech I would say you are absolutely correct it's free speech. We're not necessarily discussing somebody's right to free speech as much as the appropriateness of such speech. Just because it's their right doesn't mean I have to tolerate it. I would confront the guy because it's MY right to confront him. Free speech does not mean speech without consequences.
I'd also agree it's up to the parents and family to instill the correct values. They say it takes a village to raise a child. The idiot wearing that shirt is not helping.
That said, after thinking it through I would most likely approach the guy with a shirt bought from the track and kindly ask him to help me out:
"Do me a favor, friend. There's a lot of young, impressionable children here. Take this shirt and put it over the shirt you're wearing. I'd really appreciate that. Parent's don't want to explain what that word means right now." :-)

Just contrasting the rock festival and racing crowds in my daydreams. When my son-in-law opens the show he tells the crowd "lets get this "f-ing" party started and obscene sayings on t-shirts are considered a badge of honor. Big difference between a metal crowd and racing fans. LOL

Haha! Right. The two crowds are a bit different. Rock festivals don't market themselves as being "family friendly." Usually race tracks DO.

What idiot parent would take a child to rock shows that are known to be vulgar. There are plenty of rock shows that you can take your kids to that bands are decent.

You have a point but my son is 50 and we go to see my son-in-laws band whenever they're in the area. Me at 70, him at 50 and most of the rest of the crowd < 30. It is interesting, kind of like spending time at the zoo.
