Billy Wood Sr. has lost his battle with cancer today. For those who don't know him, Billy was one of the best to ever wheel a midget with 8 Badger midget championships to his credit. I never witnesed Billy's driving but have been told by some of the best racers out there that he was the best there ever was in a midget. Billy's funeral will be held in Kenosha,Wisconsin on Tuesday evening. I never seen him race but feel blessed to have known him throughout my entire life.God speed friend & R.I.P. until I see you on the other side.

Billy James Wood, 79, took his last checkered flag on Sunday, November 11, 2007 at home surrounded by his family.
Born on January 26, 1928 in Marrietta, Mississippi, he was the son of the late General and Alice (Thornton) Wood. He attended schools in Mississippi before moving to Kenosha looking for work. He was employed at American Motors Company for over 38 years – retiring on July 29, 1987.
On August 11, 1951 he married Beverly Miller. From 1953 to 1969 Billy raced Badger Midgets – winning the Badger championship eight times (1954, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60, 66 & 68). In August of 2002 Billy was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame; something he shared with A.J. Foyt and Tony Stewart. He was also a charter member of the Kenosha Legends Hot Rod Association.
In his later years, Billy took a lot of pride in his garden and lawn. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the dog track, playing the WI and IL lotteries, watching his son B.G. race, working on cars with his grandson and watching NASCAR.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; three sons: Dr. Thomas (Rae) Wood of Franksville, Jerald (Jodie) Wood, and B.G. Wood – both of Kenosha; two brothers, Travis Wood of Wrightsville, GA, and Wayne (Maureen) Wood of Fulton, MS; and a sister, Carolyn (Ray) Underwood of Iuka, MS. Billy is also survived by six loving grandchildren: Abbigail (Paul) Hampton, Jennifer, Lauren, Mackenzie, Jarrett and Jordan.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tramel and Cratis Wood.

I didn't know him and I might not have ever cared to know him. Though as a Race fan who read this post I wish him God speed and he sounds like he was a great dirt racer. God/plus Good speed to any dirt racer. Another Driver going for the Nationals Line up in Heaven. I can't wait to see my first 2070 Heaven Nationals featuring all the drivers I ever heard about.
