GRANT SEXTON TAKES SEVENTH AT CLAY CUP IN WASHINGTON!

(Lakeside, CA, July 19, 2019) Up and coming open wheel driver Grant Sexton scored an impressive seventh-place finish in the finale of the 36th Annual IBEW/NECA Clay Cup Nationals at Washington’s Deming Speedway.  The finish came four days after his 15th birthday and equaled his best outing of the 2019 season.

The 1,365-mile journey from their home in Lakeside, California to Washington, saw all three regular Sexton/Gatlin Racing drivers – Grant, his older sibling Dalton and father Brent – take on the best drivers in the Northwest.  Originally slated to be three nights of racing, the first evening was wiped out before the main event due to Mother Nature unleashing her fury and dousing the track with heavy rains.  Just before the rains came roaring in, Grant, Dalton and Brent finished third through fifth respectively in the 15-lap B-Main event.

Night number two saw Mother Nature in a better mood and she allowed the full show to get in.  In Qualifying, Grant topped the family trio when he timed in 14th fastest.  Brent was one spot behind in 15th and Dalton ended up 23rd.

Grant and Dalton placed fifth and sixth respectively in the second heat race of the night with father Brent coming home eighth in the next one.  Brent and Dalton were forced to run the B Main with Brent ending up third to earn a spot in the 25-lap A Main.  However, Dalton had a DNF and was done for the night.

In the subsequent A Main event, Brent came home 14th with Grant two spots behind in 16th.

Heading into Saturday’s finale, Grant and Brent already had their ticket punched into the 40-lap A Main.  However, 16 year-old Dalton had to start his night in the 15-lap B Main. It was a race he needed to finish fifth or better to join his brother and father in the biggest race of the weekend.  He did just that by taking home the fifth and final transfer spot to ensure all three Sexton racers were in the field for the finale of the historic race.

Grant was the star of the team in the celebrated main event coming from his 14th place starting position to finish seventh.  Brent ended up 11th and Dalton, who dropped out on lap 22, finished 14th.

The Sexton brothers gave a great account of themselves on their first trip to the Deming track and against the new competition.  They will be bringing back all of what they learned for their next on-track appearance, along with father Brent, at the August 10th California Lightning Sprint Car race at the Barona Speedway.
