A bad night at the speedway beats a good day/night at work, any day!

And last night was a bad night at the speedway.

35+ years of attending this race and I don't recall ever being as disappointed as last night. Slicked off after hot laps. Feature needed a late caution to salvage something instead of the early one.

all said, an uncharacteristic night at Lernerville.

You'll have this, I guess.

I watched on Dirtvision.  Very bad track conditions......

I have always had Lernerville on my bucket list.....I removed it last night.  I will not go to any track that are hard, black, and dry before the heats are over or warmups for that matter.

Let's go Sprint Car Racing!

Knoxville - Best Track In the USA!
Eldora - 2nd Best Track in the USA!

Maybe I watched a different race, but I respectfully disagree, thought it was a good night of racing.  I'll take a track any day when they can run top to bottom, with passing all over the place.  It actually takes skill to race a track like that, and not just about who can stand on the gas the hardest!

The track was better in the feature than it was all night.  Gravel was dominant, but racing through the field was good.  Not going to get a side by side finish every night.  The track still produces really good racing on most occasions.

Agreed, heats were very exciting which is a rarity in winged sprint car racing and the feature was wild if you were watching the battles between 4th through 7th.

where is Nickules? He usually is the expert on Lernerville.

It appeared from getting there early and watching the prep they were worried about the track chunking up so they packed it hard. They had an asphalt roller out in the corners. The all-star race was great a couple weeks ago, absolute perfection when it comes to the surface. But I had no problem and enjoyed the races, slick tracks that are racy are awesome

Some people want a heavy track with a huge cushion where the cars run wide open. Owners, who foot the bill for wadded up cars, probably dont care for that type of track.  Takes more skill on slick tracks.  Racing looked ok last night.

I'm really surprised at the replies here. I guess I'm getting old. I used to be one of those 'yeah, but there was a hell of a battle for 8th' guys. I guess I've become one of the many who just don't get excited about 8th.

I was sitting with a bunch of wiley veterans/friends who weren't impressed either. Maybe we should pick a different section to sit in - or I should, anyway.

Two were at Indiana Speed Week last week - 'saw more racin' in two heats than they did all night' (at Lernerville). USAC inverts the top six in the heats. While I can appreciate that they gotta keep cars on the road, heads-up heats are just a parade. Don't we deserve better than a heck of a battle for the transfer spot - 4th-5th-6th - when there is one? how many times does that happen - one out of every four heats maybe??? how bout a battle for the win?

Give me a choice between 10 travelers and 14 "locals" with inverted starts vs. 18 travelers and 6 "locals" with heads-up starts, I'll go with the 10/14. I came to see some racing/passing.

There was some action and passing in the front for the first third of the race, maybe, then Gravel had it pretty much covered for the second third, and definitely covered for the last third - won by a half track - a half track!

Sheldon had a good run  +11 . I didn't catch on to that until almost the end. Why? cuz he went from 21st to 10th. No offense, but I wasn't really interested in 21st through 10th. And, I might pick that up at the Grove or Port, but on a smaller track I have a hard enough time keeping track of the guys up front. Most of the others were plus/minus 3. If you can keep track of plus/minus three at Lernerville, good for you!

A late caution likely means no whining from me. But, it didn't happen so I'm going on Hoseheads and whine about it  Smile

Yo dsc! Yeah I'm still around but life has taken some turns and well I don't post as much, but still around.  So I'll say the track for the feature was good and they salvaged what could've been a bad track. At the drivers mtg a number (a large number) of drivers were not happy with the track at all and this was before they even hit the track. Hot laps and qualifying saw tires smoking and burning rubber in 3 and 4 and a bad rut developed at the top between 3 and 4 and thru the middle. But I will say the track developed and had multiple grooves, it was just much more technical in 3 and 4 come feature time. Good night of racing, done early and no crashes. I'll take it!

No, just like a track where the drivers can race and not slip and slide all over the place.  During TT every car was fishtailing coming off the turns.  During the heats I remember saying and the gentlemen I was watching the race with agreed.  I said...I would rather watch paint dry than to watch this. The heats if you were not on the outside you were not going to win the heat.  Very boring!!  The feature wasn't much better if any.  Very boring night at the races.

The track should be very tacky at the beginning of the night and as the night goes on it should dry out to be the perfect track for the feature.  Last night was not one of those nights.  The track was horrible at the start of the night and by feature time it was worse.

The king of track prep has spoken, all hail the king. Afterall, he watched it online, lol.  Remember folks, this is the fool that bitches about another Pa track week in and week out no matter if the racing is good or not. I mean, hell, who wants to see cars passing each other when the track is dry. Passing is only enjoyable when it's tacky and perfect.  You know, like how Strawser preps his little matchbox dirt oval.

I talked to my well traveled sprint car authority buddy last night. He said it wasn't bad  - 'track wasn't great, but the race wasn't bad'.

So, never mind.

But, they still need to do something so that heat races are actually races for the front rather than the back. Though I guess I could just hang-out in the pits til feature time. That wouldn't be so bad, I guess.....

If the track was horrible for heats and worse for the main, and its funner to watch paint dry.. why did you and the gentleman you were watching it with continue to watch?  No offense but it something bothers me so much, that I feel the need to post the same shit every time a track isnt heavy all night long, Id stop watching.  But I love sprint car racing and I know that all tracks wont be perfect all the time.  I actually go to the races and enjoy myself.  Dry slick, tacky whatever.  Just my opinion

Agreed. I went and I thought it was exciting. Not a typical Lernerville surface from my experiences but I was entertained the whole night.
