CLAYTON TAKES OPENING NIGHT OF OVAL NATIONALS Friday, 02 November 2007 Perris,
Calif....Daron Clayton of Sikeston, MO, scored a convincing 25-lap
feature win Thursday night to kick-off the 12th Annual Budweiser Oval
Nationals at the Perris Auto Speedway.
With most of the
best drivers from the Lucas Oil USAC National Sprint Car series on hand
to challenge the USAC/CRA regulars, Clayton charged from the sixth
starting spot to the front of the 28-car field in his R&B Racing
No. 10c Competition Welding in just four laps. Casey Shuman,
Indianapolis, IN, took advantage of a slight miscue by Clayton on a
restart and took the lead on the 16th lap. Shuman's lead would be
short-lived and Clayon would go on to secure the top spot for good on
the 18th circuit.
Shuman's Jim Massey / Massey's Truck Repair
No. 2az would eventually finish third behind the Kasey Kahne / Mopar
No. 9 JEI driven by Kevin Swindell of Germantown, TN. Rickie Gaunt,
Torrance, Calif., was the highest finishing CRA driver. After starting
seventh, Gaunt drove the Nadine Gardner / Gardner Pipe & Mechanical
No. 94 Chalk to a fourth-place finish. Riverside, California's David
Cardey rounded-out the top-five in the Glen Crossno / ITI Performance
No. 83 Bullet.
Blake Miller out-qualified the 68-car
field during time trials, but would be sidelined for the remainder of
the evening after suffering engine problems during his heat race.
