George Hobaugh to Run Full-Time With All Star Circuit of Champions in 2019

Written By: Justin Snyder/ BeerHill Gang TV

Sprint Car racing is all about the highs and the lows.  Even the greatest drivers who have strapped into a seat behind the wheel of a 410 powered machine have had their moments. One day you are celebrating victory and the next you are scratching your head trying to figure out what’s next.

George Hobaugh Motorsports, a native of Chicora, PA, knows this all too well. Growing up the son of a modified driver, Hobaugh caught the racing bug at an early age. Beginning in 2000 at 16 years old, he ran micro sprints, collecting 76 race victories and 4 championships along the way. He then went into the 305 Sprint Car ranks in 2014, picking up 15 victories and a championship in only 2 years time.

Winning became the norm. It wasn’t a matter of whether he would run well, but how he’d find space for all the trophies he’d been collecting. The next logical step was to move up to the 410 Sprint Car ranks.  In the middle of 2016 season, he put together a car and went out expecting to find more success. However, it hasn’t been as easy.

“This has really been more of a challenge then anything I have ever been used to when it comes to racing,” said Hobaugh. “Winning and contending has always come natural to me and not having that success at this level has been frustrating and a real eye opener.”

It took 3 years for Hobaugh to finally taste success.  Last season he picked up his first career win at the 410 Sprint Car ranks at Sharon Speedway during a weekly points show. He also showed that he’s capable of running well against some of the best in the country when he finished second to National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum driver Dave Blaney in the All Star Circuit of Champions visit to Sharon during the Lou Blaney Memorial in July.

He was also named the TWIN-STATE Auto Racing Club Most Improved Driver of 2018 along with picking up the 2018 Pittsburgh Circle Track Club Dirt Sprint Car Championship.

However, that success was short lived and following a trip to Charlotte for the World Finals at the close of 2018, Hobaugh began to contemplate his next step in his racing career.

“We got our first win finally and I’m out there against the All Stars swapping the lead and battling for a win against Dave Blaney and I’m feeling pretty good,” said Hobaugh, who operates a family owned auto parts store in Karns City, Pa. “Then I go out to Charlotte and the whole world has their eyes on us and we’re out there battling with Dave trying to get out of the C-Main. Talk about a reversal of fortunes!”

With the desire to be more competitive and the drive to compete for wins, Hobaugh debated his next move. He could continue to run weekly in Western PA for a minimal purse or go all in on racing and travel. After much thought, he made the decision to run full-time in 2019 as a traveling member of the Ollie's Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions.

With a majority of the schedule in the Ohio and Pennsylvania region, it made the most sense from a financial and personal standpoint. With a wife, two young children and a fledging business, he wouldn’t have to change much and it would allow him to run for more money and learn as well.

“I’m not getting any richer and I’m not getting any younger, so I figured I might as well do this while I have to equipment and ability,” said the 35 year old Hobaugh. “If I’ve learned anything it’s that opportunity only strikes so many times and I think it’s just time to take the next step while I can.”

“I’m excited at the thought of competing against some of the best in the business each night and seeing if I can’t learn a few things along the way. I know we will likely struggle a bit to begin with and there will be nights where we may be fighting just to make the field, but I think given time and work, we can be good enough to contend at some places and maybe pick up a win or two,” added Hobaugh.

For Hobaugh, who owns his own team, the biggest change will be the travel and having to be more aggressive on the track. In the past, he placed a focus on his weekly program and running for points in Western, PA.  So when he ran against the touring series, he never pushed his car too hard on track.

“It’s not that I didn’t want to win or contend, but when you are fighting for championships and a weekly purse, you got to do what you can do to make sure you have a car come time for that weekly show,” said Hobaugh, who ran about 50 races in 2018. “If I was running mid pack or at the back against the All Stars, I was ok getting out of there with some experience and a full car and not wrecking the car trying to finish 12th or something.”

“However, I know that doing this tour and with that being my focus, I’m going to have to be a lot more aggressive. I’ve got two cars lined up and we’re ready to go. I’m going to wreck some cars for sure this season and I don’t doubt how hard this will be, but I’m going all in and I can’t wait to get started, added Hobaugh.”

The team will utilize XXX Chassis and has motors from Gressman Powersports. The main sponsor will be Krill Recycling, LLC along with Hobaugh’s NAPA Auto Parts. Other sponsors on the car will be Maverick Rigging and Hauling, Ridgeview Security LLC and Colliers Custom Kitchen & Bath.
