Zack West finishes off rookie season, looks ahead to 2008
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA - October 26, 2007... Chico driver Zack West is one of the many graduates from the booming Outlaw Kart scene in Northern California and after completing his first season behind the wheel of a 410 winged sprint car, he and the West-Ing Racing team are looking ahead to 2008 and beyond. West competed this season in the Feather Falls Casino point series at his home track of Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.
The Feather Falls Casino championship series saw one its most competitive in recent memory as a bevy of veterans were intermingled with a good mix of youngsters each and every week. It was a great experience building season for West who was able to compete in 15 of the 18 events aboard the Community Construction, Ing Excavation, A.R.T. Enterprise, JEI Chassis No. 14. The Silver Dollar Speedway season averaged nearly 30 cars a night showing just how healthy racing is in Chico community.
West’s personal best night of action this season came in August during Point Race #19 at the Chico bullring. On an evening that saw 27 cars in competition, the youngster was able to transfer out of the B-main and charge from 18th starting to bring home a sixth place finish in the main event. A week after the sixth place finish he and West-Ing Racing team came back to Silver Dollar Speedway and qualified 10th quickest out of 31 cars, finished second in the opening heat race and capped the night with a ninth place finish in the 25 lap feature.
The World of Outlaws sanctioned Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar saw West qualify 24th fastest out of 47 cars during his prelim night and finish seventh in the B-main. He came back on Saturday to win the D-main and then move from 15th to 11th in the 15 lap C-main. It’s always a good thing when you can compete with the "Greatest Show on Dirt" for not only the experience but the exposure that running in such a huge event brings to the table.
The team has purchased a new JEI Chassis for next season and have also bought a new trailer to use for ‘08. They are also in contract negotiations with crew chief Lee Watson who came on board this past season for a few races. Watson is a talented young wrench who has worked for some big name drivers and teams the past few seasons and would be a huge asset to West-Ing Racing as a full time crew chief. For next season the West-Ing Racing team plans to run once again in select events at Silver Dollar Speedway in the Feather Falls Casino point series, but they’ll also run in a few Golden State Challenge Series events when they are near the Chico area. The hope is to run in a few GSC shows so they can keep their rookie status for a possible Rookie of the Year run with the series’ in 2009.
