It seems like no one really wants to have to take a provisional. I can't see where it really does much for a racer except maybe picking up a few additional points. What's the highest place anyone has ever finished in a WoO race after taking a provisional start?

I would have to assume someone (Kinser maybe? Sammy?) has won an outlaw feature taking a provisional. Probably has happened more than once. Especially in the "golden era" when 2/3 of the field was lap traffic to one of the big 3.

No driver has ever won after using a provisional to start a World of Outlaws Craftman Sprint Car Series A-main. There have been a handful of top 5's, and without going back into my notes to check, I BELIEVE 3rd is the highest finishing position for a provisional starter.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think anyone had won using a provisional start. I am surprised at top 5 though. egras mentions the big 3 up above, but I didn't think provisionals had been around that long- maybe 10-15 years?

Pretty sure someone just recently, either last year or 2016, used a provisional to get 3rd. I think it was Pittman but not 100% sure.
edit: just researched and was correct. 2016 Brad Doty Classic Pittman took a provisional, started 25th and finished 3rd

How often has somebody won from the B MAIN?

Schatz did it at the Knoxville Nationals. I think it was four years ago.

Murphy--never even thought of that. I stand corrected.
IF provisionals had been around back then, I would have fully expected one of those guys to have done it. It would be much more difficult to do in the last 10-15 years.

Without much research, I remember Fred Rahmer winning from 24th at the Grove in 2010...
If this post isn't results, stories or something c

I saw that live. Amazing. Everybody counted him out, myself included. He methodically worked his way thru the field, then when he got to about 5th, I said to myself "this SOB is gonna do it, isn't he?" I always root for somebody to beat him, but I will NEVER boo Schatz! Ultimate respect.....

Yep. I bought the video of that, but unfortunately, camera didn't follow him fighting thru the pack until he got close. Not sure if he came from B main, tho....I think it was 2009. just before I started following sprint cars

I saw it live too. Schatz started 4th or 5th in the B that night. He moved to 2nd pretty quickly but didn't seem to gain ground on Lynton Jeffrey. Then with a few laps to go he turned on the speed and won it. I told my guys at that point that Schatz was definetly going to have something for them.

It’s all about points racing. With series getting a DNQ and the typical 90 show up points instead of say running 15th and getting 120 points can be difference in being champ or 3rd/4th place. Unless it’s outlaws then you’re still second to Don Don.

I was there as well. The only time I actually stood up and applauded Donny after a race. It's not that I don't respect him, but I don't root for him.

I think it was 2009 there was good chance that Todd Shaffer was going to win the Grove National Open on a provisional but was crashed out by a local while going for third. What happened was he crashed out of his heat by some Kinser guy. He took a provisional in a backup car and was going for third when it happened again. He was hurt in that one. They had makeup feature to run which he had to run to win the Grove point title. He borrowed a car for that one and finished high enough to win the point championship.
