I went to outlaw show last night and as I always do in Central Pa and ohio root for top local guys.. Lernerville is not like years past
Ed lynch , Tim shaffer or even Danny Holtsgraver... Carl bowser who just won at tri-city with 5 cars in the field could not get close in the B main.Braden Matttus and sye lynch should have made it but fell way short.. The only one was Brandon Spithauler and A.J Flick whoo look pretty good.. If you go to central Pa or ohio you would never see the top local guys not make the show.

I was there too. Kahne passed Flick on last lap of B main forcing AJ to take a provisional tacking himself on the back of the A main field. Was hoping to see a better showing from the locals.

You are right AJ Flick had to take a Provisional.. Very weak performance.. Bowser in the 98 can barley make the field in a all star race .. Think he made less than half the shows .. Mattus struggled last year with all stars as well.. I have seen both of these guys race at lernerville and mercer in the past but when they run aganst comp they fall short... Spithauler and Flick
are the best of the local talent and Sye Lynch is getting better..

Hobaugh is a local and made the race, coming off a 2nd at the lou Blaney memorial. Also Jack Sodeman wasn’t there (likely due to work) and he’s one of the top local guys

Outlaws have been pretty dominant there the last few years for sure.

I have said that Carl bowser with that big money team can not compete on the big stage at this point of his career..
I go to most of All Star races in Ohio and last year he struggled and this year he is overmatched.. I think alot of the lernerville guys just run with 12 head motors and old Equipment .. AJ Flick ,Spithauler and George Horbauh are up and coming with inferior stuff and do very well.. On the plus side of Bowser he sticks it out every night and keeps trying
Think if he works on being more consistent and run one good track every week like Flick does at port royal in PA
he will get better

My Bad you are right Hobaugh did make it and was really good! and if Sodeman was there he is is really good there and always runs good in Western Pa and Ohio..

Actually, I think it was more disappointing seeing the two slowest cars at the back of the field. Neither had any business being on the track. One was lapped by Sweet in a heat race. Was glad to see the other leave the track before Sweet lapped him too. I get they’re paying to be there, but there should be a minimum qualifying time. Outlaws all running 13 or 14 second laps probably shouldn’t have to deal with folks turning an 18 second time. Average week to week races? Sure. Professional Don Martin Memorial? Not so much.

There is a significant disparity in talent levels from western PA to eastern PA, as it has been for many years. There really has not been any one driver that has stepped up to fill in the blank spaces left by Ed Lynch Jr., Rod George, or even throw multi-time champion Kevin Schaeffer in the mix.
AJ Flick has stepped it up to some small degree, but he and many other's still have much to prove. I'm not sure if it's a financial thing, a talent thing, or a competition thing??? The weekly talent racing at Lernerville, in ALL divisions, has declined significantly over the past five years or so. Late models have lost the likes of Satterlee, Miley, and Ferree to national/regional schedules. Geisler retired, Flinner retired, etc.
I personally was a bit disappointed that more of the PA Posse guys didn't travel out here for the show. I assume that is due to preparations for Lincoln/WG this weekend.
As for the two slow cars... The pink 91 is a young female driver in her third season I believe. Just trying to get seat time I'd say. The other #1 car was Gale Ruth from up north, I think he is in his 60's??? Both were clearly off the pace but did a good job of holding their lines and staying out of the way I thought.
How about the driving exhibition that Kahne put on in the B-Main?!?! That was exciting to watch!!!

Bowser is higher than spithaler in all-star points and has definitely made more races than Spithlaer. Just looking outside of Ohio speedweek Bowser has made pretty much every other all star race (not including provisionals). And he’s had a couple good runs, most recently winning a dash at the Lou Blaney memorial and finishing 7th. Im not much of a bowser fan, but he’s seemed to do alright as a rookie on a pretty solid all star lineup.
i also think we could probably list Shaffer as a local these days. The car is from just across the border in Ohio, and they’ve competed at local shows at Sharon and PPMS.

Im not sure it’s a money thing, but a lot of the current sprint drivers are all pretty inexperienced. Most of them have only been around for 5 years or so (save for sodeman but he wasn’t there last night). At least they get good car counts, an average local night at Lernerville is getting 24ish cars. Also a name is watch out for in the W.PA scene is Cody Bova, he wasn’t at lernerville but had a lot of success in the 305 division and has been getting pretty fast in his rookie 410 year.
As for the lernerville lates at least they have Norris, who just won a WoO show. But other than him there’s no one and a reason he’s won pretty much every week

Bowser has ran 16 features out of 27.. 4 of which were provisionals.. Thats 12 shows out 27 pretty poor considering he has been racing since 2005.. Spithauler has run 14 shows and is 40 points behind him and i know that kid has like one motor..

3 top tens is terrible for that kind of equipment in 98. Cale conley is doing a really good job in the 7K.
I think Spithaler and Esh will get Bowser by end of year..

I like A.J Flick, seen him at Lernerville and he ran well. One thing when these Western PA. guys come east they feel they have to run the big 1/2 tracks-Port and WG. I understand that its closer from the west to go to Port or WG then Lincoln. But I think their setups and driving style need to learn the smaller tracks first. Run Lincoln, Baps, and even Trailway on their 410 Sunday night and learn to dodge lapped cars, learn the competive styles of some of the veteran 410 drivers before being a DNQ at the big tracks.
Point of reference Joe Kata was towing to Lincoln most every Saturday, wasnt setting world on fire but was getting better each week. Gave up I guess and now goes to Port, usually doesnt make it { depends on car count}or starts way back. There is a learning curve esp at Port. which is one of the fastest if not the fastest track in PA. BTW this was not a put down of AJ or Joe just someones opinion involved in racing since 1962. Heck I even offered Joe the use of my shop if he does a 3 day weekend, instead of maintenancing in a parking lot.

Well first of all 5 of the 27 races were races in Florida that dont count for points and Bowser wasn’t there.
And? Spithaler has been on the tour for a few years now and has been to all these tracks while bowser is making his first trip to most of them and Bowser is still making more shows, has made more dashes and won heats. It’s clear you got some kind of axe to grind for whatever reason.

98 won a tract championship at port royal with mike Erdley couple years back.. Doug Esh won big races in cetral pa in the 98! Downtown Danny was fast in that car. And Chad Kemenah won all over the place in that car!!. I have nothing personal against Bowser it is what it is

That’s a bit of revisionist history.winning track titles just means you were there every week. That car has never been a big winner. Esh may have won a few but not many. And if I remember correctly CK was a sponsored deal, not their equipment.
