What a weekend.
First up I gotta thank YZ for all the help. Booking a room, then splitting the cost. I had never been to California before, except on my way to Australia,so I had no idea on where to stay etc. We had talked about the Oval Nats the yr before, but Trophy Cup was on the same weekend last year, and I had to go back to Maine to get my stuff and move it to Indy. So the Oval Nats were delayed a yr. I wont be delaying next year,as I have already penciled this in as a "must see" once again.
Good to meet up with new Hosers, Favor Boy,Staggerd,Kaylee,Andrew Kunas,Morrie, and who knows who else I met,and forgot. My memory can be very selective at times. The old Hosers were YZ,Stubb & Stubette,Carwash,Hoser himself, and probably more I cant remember now either.
What a fun time though. Just finding the motel was an adventure when my computer, complete with map and directions decided not to co-operate with me. Luckily I had more than one map open on the puter,or I would have been making late night phone calls to get the address! Should remember 2 things next time, write addresses down, and bring the damn road atlas with me too. I found the place no problems though, just a bit later than I wanted to. I was up around 24 hours by then, and just wanted to get some sleep.
Sleep I did, till that Stubb called me cheerfully at 8am to ask if they had any more rooms where we were staying. Luckily they did,and when I told Stubb they had 2 pools, one 3 foot deep and the other 3 foot in the shallow end,and 4 1/2 feet on the deep end,he said "Cool, now I can go scuba diving! What a clown. Later that day we would have more fun when we went out to eat (and the others drink) while I got to stay sober and be the chauffer.I made out pretty good, cause the tab was $114 and change amongst 5 of us,and I only got charged for 1 pepsi after drinking about 8 of them! Little did most of them know that they were taking a life and death chance riding with me after I smashed the rental car into a curb. Damn that front end sticks out way more on a Dodge Magnum than on the POS van II I have been driving all over Indiana, and beyond.
I missed out on StubbsBBQ, but even after 88 races(at that point) this year,I wanna be there for all the action on the track, and sometimes that cuts into the social scene a bit. Thats ok,cause we made up for it later with a trip to Del Taco, then to compare which taco's were worse, the 24 hour joint down Perris Blvd a bit where we got treated to Mexican Kareoke! That was a part of the trip that will stick out for awhile, along with Stubb playing "Road Course Ranger" thru a gas station after he missed the turn while following us home. I thought they were goners for sure. Stubb doesnt know it,but I ate one of his Taco's,and also one of YZ's after we got back and YZ was Zzzzzzing out. I hate to waste food!!
It was fun trying to get the girls at the Motel office to believe that YZ was John Lennon. I doubt they even know who John Lennon even is. Maybe I should have said John Mcenroe instead? The night shift girls must have found the bottle of Cabo, cause they sure didnt give us a 3:30am wake up call so I could make the flight out at 6am. Luckily the time had changed,or I might still be out there. Even after waking up a bit after 4,taking a lightning quick shower, stopping to fill the car up,and driving 80 to the airport,I really just squeaked on just in time. I suspect some of the other travelers were from the drag crowd at Pomona. Interestingly enough, the same oriental couple that flew in from Houston when I came out were on the same flight back to Houston. Luckily they werent sitting in MY seat on the flight back.
Carwash's memory must be almost as good as Eckerts memory is. He's never forgotten that the Hyvee frozen foods section in Knoxville is one of my fave places to be during the Nats,he also remembered that I have only had 2 favorite drivers over the years,Tommy Hinnershitz, and Jack Hewitt. He found out now that I have added a 3rd driver to the list, and thats Daron Clayton. He is great value if you like drivers that stand on the gas. He has been likened to Jac Haudenschild a fair bit, when he's on the track, you cant take your eyes off him. Its just to bad Daron had to get crashed out of the A-main on Saturday night after a good win on Thursday, and a heat race win from the back on Friday. I told Daron that except for his parents, doubtful any of his other fans have been as many miles as I have this year to watch him run.
I'll be back next year to see if he can pull it off.
PS good chatting with Peter Murphy again. Cant believe its been 6 years since I last had the chance to chat with him at Knoxville, and the Thunder thru the plains tour after Knoxville in 2001.Always a class act,Peter is one of the easiest drivers to chat with.

First thing I had a GREAT TIME, meeting Stubb, Andrew Q. and who knows who else was fun I only wish I could have been there more days, It was good to see YZ, Murry, Riff Raff and T.J. and Gus
My riding partners Carwash And Kaylee were great also, even though Kaylee snores,
The racing was awesome congrats to Bud. I felt bad for Tim I thought he a real shot at winning that race.
Now the Moreno Valley Bowl, that was interesting I dont know how many Jagerbombs we did butt I do remember the Marriage Proposal, I think she said yes. and allmost getting stranded at the track at 3:00 in the morning was an adventure, ended up riding back with Shumans group back to the hotel and getting my car so we could find carwash who was walking back to the hotel, what a nite.
P.S. I would do it all again anytime.
