Went to the Chili Bowl for the first time last yeah was hoping I'd see some of the up and coming drivers at Knoxville Nats this year but didn't see to many registered?   Don't we usually get to see a couple of the midget guys?

I can't picture who you are thinking of, as most of the better Chili bowl drivers are Sprint Car drivers the rest of the year.  It would be helpful to mention a couple of the drivers you are thinking of out of the nearly 300 from the Chili Bowl.  Also, if you are only a "midget guy", that may very likely mean you don't have the time, opportunity or funds to run a sprint car let alone the Nationals.

As a Sprint Car owner, the last place I'm gambling on an up and comng midget driver from the Chili Bowl that doesn't normally run sprints successfully to some degree, is to the Knoxville Nationals.  You likely will be racing in the E main half second off the pace.

Keith Kunz team midget driver Spencer Bayston is racing in the #39 Kevin Swindell car.

Carson Macedo who drove a Midget last year is entered in the 3g car.

Brady Bacon does the full USAC Midget schedule and will be there in the #99 entry.

So a few drivers there with Midget links

The drivers I where thinking of:

  • Obviously would like to see Kyle Larson
  • Christopher Bell
  • Justin Grant
  • Tanner Thorson
  • Tyler Courtney
  • Jerry Coons Jr.
  • Ronnie Gardner
  • Travis Berryhill
  • C.J Leary
  • Shane Golobic
  • Tyler Thomas
  • Colby Copeland
  • Thomas Meseraull
  • Tracy Hines
  • Ryan Robinson

Just thought maybe the next step for most of these drivers would be sprint cars?  I know a few midget drivers when straight to big time but thought I would see a couple up and comers at Knoxville.

Couple other drivers I was thinking of: Kevin Thomas Jr, J.J Yeley, Tony Bruce Jr,

Bell is entered

Tyler Courtney ran it just last year as I recall (Team car to Danny Smith maybe)

Colby Copeland has ran it was I believe in the Lucas Oil #5v car.

outside of KTJ, who else has run winged cars through the season and has experience with a wing on a track bigger than a 1/4?  I'm just curious myself.

I wouldn't list Coons, Hines or Gardner as "up and comers" myself, they've been running USAC for a long time.

Yeley is still trying his hand at stock cars last I saw (he ran the Xfinity race just last Saturday night) and Tony Bruce Jr has really cut back on his racing the past couple years as well.

My guess is you'll get to see these midget drivers running at Indianola, IA on Tuesday night if you make the effort to attend.

Most of the drivers listed already drive sprint cars...however only a few have any wing experience. I can't remember Grant ever doing any wing stuff although as long as he's been around I wouldn't be surprised if he's dabbled. Thorson seems to be interested in making the jump straight into pavement stock car stuff from what i've seen. Sunshine has some wing experience but likely not enough to do anything at Knoxville (he went big at the USAC race at Knoxville earlier this year). Leary I don't recall being in a wing car. Golobic I could see giving it a whirl. TT seems more interested in the non-wing side of things (praise the Lord) and I don't recall if he's gotten into a wing car yet. T-Mez has stated interest in running more wing shows and has ran in Ohio a little bit this year, but again probably not enough experience to make any serious entry.

With the exception of Larson, Bell, and Golobic, to my knowledge none of other drivers have enough wing experience to be entering in the nationals.

That's a list of good drivers.  There are several on the list that do run 360/410 Wing Sprints and win, but the reason we won't see most of your list is they are mostly Non Wing Sprint guys every week.

Back to my first reply, I wouldn't take a great nonwing driver to the Nationals without running consistently up front in quite a few 410 Wing shows before hand.  Some on your list have run the Nationals.  Most of the drivers on your list would admit to figuring they would get "spanked" at the Nationals without more seat time, and a guy like Grant or Courtney has more reputation to lose getting beat by back markers at the Nationals than they will gain by being there.

Thorson, Golobic, Copeland have the experience and win in local 410 wing.  Bell could run up front at the Nationals.
