I watched for the first time in years. To me, what a shame this race has become. Driver's buy a ride is what it should be called. The cars are ugly looking. Huh, I guess this is what my elders would say you young guys don't have any idea what racing used to be at Indy. Hey, you could call it the highest form of crate racing out there. They do give flexibility in 2 chassis designs and 2 motor choices, be it honda, which definitely had a power advantage, or chevy. Time has passed many of us by. Look at the fields and the fans in the stands, the next generation doesn't care. I will say after seeing that car come down on that wall the cars are safer which is a good thing.

15 different leaders. 35 lead changes. Some very wild restarts, including 3 and even 4 wide heading into a turn. I agree with another poster's comments about ugly cars ( which by the way will be radically improved upon in 2018 ), and lack of multiple engine builders, but as an older man I accept that the sport has changed. But in the overall, the racing is much closer than prior years and prior decades. If you take a few minutes to look at the 101 year history of the race, there were dozens of races won by one minute or more and up to 5 lap leads at the checkers. Dicing for positions at speeds 50 mph higher than NASCAR and with no fenders is pretty impressive. Champ dirt cars and low slung roadsters at the 500 have gone the way of horses and buggies, but the racing is better than ever. The cars will not look bulbous n 2018 and the rear fenders will be gone. Just need more Americans in the field to appeal to the dirt track crowd.

It stopped being racing a LONG time ago and became entertainment. 4,348 lead changes doesn't always equate to great racing. I don't give a shit where the drivers are from. Show me a race that was won by a driver who was able to outdrive the rest in an innovative car that the crewchief out thought the rest. I don't care if 2nd was 15 laps down, THAT is RACING! Oh.....And give me back Bump Day!

The racing at Indy is so far superior to NASCAR it's not even funny. But the owners still remain out of touch, and the focus is all on the event, not the drivers themselves (save Alonso, who is obviously going back to F1).

I do not know how old you are but I can remember when every car had a OFFY engine. I do not think anyone called them crate engines. Also almost every car was a Kurtis, even the Novi was built by Kurtis. I wish every new auto for hiway was a 32 Ford coupe or a 57 Chevy, but it will never happen. There were 2 Indy car manuf., but every one ended out with same one bacause they felt it was better. You put cars in a wind tunnel and you end out with one result. Back in front engine days you could put a new car on the track at Indy for $20,000. Now you can not buy a steering wheel for that. The old days were great with alot of different personalities. The pit crews were rough and tough vets of WW2. They got in fist fights at the taverns at night. I think it was Dick Rathman that got in a fist fight with a fan as he entered track. Those colorful days are gone. The Indy drivers of today are well known in the countries they came from. There were more American drivers this year and unless you watch sports car races you may not know of them.

I always hear Jim Rathman got beat up coming out of a whore house the night before the 59' 500. His eye was swollen shut so they had to put Johnny Parsons in his car. lol

I agree with the Offy and the Kurtis, nobody today me included, would have the slightest idea how to tear down a Offy let alone rebuild one correctly. The days of having a car around for more than a couple races is long gone. Some of those Kurtis built cars ran the speedway for years. Someone mentioned bring back Bump day, there's not enough cars to make bump day. I'm a roadster guy, that was nut sack racing, when i first saw the rear engine car i thought it was the ugliest thing ever to hit the speedway. Along with many more. The cars did get better, but then, money came into the sport and we now no "the rest of the story".

I watched part of the race and Scott Dixon is lucky he didnt get hurt.300,000 people and the spectacule they present is amazing.Not many drivers without an accent and none with a southern one.The cars all are basically alike and its unreal how fast they go with a small displacement engine.The days of turbine,front engine,rear engines,different wing,open wheel dirt drivers,personalities like Smokey, are long gone.Technology can be bit boring when rule book is so thick.
