Not many left like Gil.He did more with less than most any other team.He came from the era when you built not bought and Donnie,Louie, and Frank were there every week to help their friend and Donnies Dad.Fitting his last race was the Nationals where Jeff Swindell put it in the A on qualifing night. Many drivers piloted the #47 and not many would ever say a bad word about Gil.RIP my friend truly a legend.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gil Sonner years ago at Williams Grove. This was after Johnny Herrera won a Thursday night WoO show, a 20 lapper. Must have been early to mid 90's.
Saw Gil again this year at Knoxville after Jeff Swindell put the #47 into the A. He was beaming from ear to ear. I was among the many who felt wonderful for him.
Rest in peace Mr. Sonner. You are a legend.

The 47 has always been one of the most tasteful pieces in the pits. Christ's peace to his family.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

I gave Gil a few photos one time and he was so thankful, same with Donnie. They saw I had decals and they asked for some to put on their cars and our friendship was born. If you wanted your day to be a bit brighter spend five minutes with him in the pits, so humble and so nice, even if they weren't running near the top he was so positive. You walked away from these two men always feeling better they were just that special, Gil was a throw back to the better days of yesteryear and I guarantee will be missed by many in the pits at Knoxville this year. RIP my friend and condolences to Don and the rest of the family.....

Hoping one of the Casey's sponsored cars (Brownie, Moro, Hasse, etc> decides to pay tribute to him at the 360 or 410 Nationals this year with his paintscheme on thier car.

That' would be cool. Since I've been going to the races the Casey's car is one of the cars I remember from my childhood.

rip & prayers to the family. johnny gibson suggested on twitter that maybe they could shorten the Saturday final at the nationals to 47 laps. I thought it was a great idea.

R.I.P. Gil Sonner, one of the best we've ever known in sprint car racing, he loved and supported his/our sport until the very end.
