Need assistance sprint car/driver historians. Recently, I purchased a large framed photo of a possibly 30's sprint car, with what appears to be the owner/mechanic and driver standing behind the sprinter. Information gathered from the picture is this: Car No. 4, Schells Garage, on the cowling is The Barrel, 227 Jefferson St. and, of course, the drivers name, Johnny McDowell. Help me brothers and sisters, who, what, where and any history to this car and driver combination. Note. Judging by the looks of the driver ( Johnny McDowell ? ), not too many slide-jobs were put on this dude! Appers to be a "quick" pay-back artist! Thank you for any light you can shed here. E-Mods.

Can you possibly post a pic? Even if nobody can identify the driver, a pic would be COOL!
SUPPORT WILDLIFE, go to a sprint car race!

Quite the swashbuckler!

Now this was back in the day when a roll bar would cause some to question your manhood! Here a seatbelt was necessary so that you wouldn't be tossed out while flying over the bricks. Most times though they were frowned upon. True American adrenaline junkies whose only excuse was that it paid better than pumping gas.

You guys are better than the F.B.I.!! The picture I have shows a much younger Johnny, perhaps from his California racing days?? Nobody has heard of -The Barrel? Sounds like a "brew" stop! Come on you drinkers of spirits ( especially you California dudes ), find this place and solve the mystery! Might be able to post picture later, help is to arrive this weekend. E-Mods.

Harry Schell?
Could make sense...drove/worked in racing during the '40s and '50s. Worked for Ferrari, BRM, Vanwall, Maserati.
He also drove for Maserati around the same time as did Johnny Mcdowell.

Here's Jack Brabham and Harry Schell in NSW...
My head hurts

fasterpussycat. Good try. The Harry Schell angle may be correct. But the sprint in my picture is definitely from an earlier era of cars. Spindle wheels all around and McDowell is wearing a "Captain America" type shirt with a rocket design on it to race in ( I kid you not ). I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did! No helmet in sight. E-Mods.

Ok...I just spewed Dr. Pepper from my nose, all over my desk.
You gotta post a pic...I can find nary a reference one for "The Barrel", but do know that Harry Schell, in addition to being quite the lady's man (as if the Errol Flynn look didn't give it away..) was an owner of a bistro that catered to the racing elite of the day...
