Well, if the pre-entry list is any indication, this is going to be one whale of an event this year. In just its fourth year at Eagle Raceway, the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals is rapidly becoming one of the "Must See" events in sprint car racing.

So far, 7 weeks before the actual race, we already have 85 teams signed up; and there are still roughly 25 local teams that aren't on the list. From North Dakota to Texas, and Pennsylvania to California plus one Canadian driver, teams from all over are getting ready to do battle on the high banks of the fastest 1/3 mile dirt track in the country; Eagle Raceway.

So, better get your plans and travel arrangements made to be at America's Home Track September 2nd through the 4th!!!

Those who have already signed up are as follows:

With just 6 weeks before the 2016 Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals kicks off, we thought that everyone might like to meet some of the drivers who will be competing this year and get a little insight into their thoughts about the upcoming event.

We will be doing this every Thursday; right up to the week before the Nationals, attempting to show the diversity of the drivers; not just where they hail from, but in lots of other aspects also.

This week’s driver is 18 year-old Ethan Fleetwood from Smithville, Indiana; driver of the 7F Fleetwood Motorsports sprint car.

Q: How long have you been running in the Racesaver class?

Ethan: This is my second full year.

Q: Where do you normally compete at?

Ethan: Every single Friday night we run at Bloomington Speedway, and then on some off nights we race at a couple of tracks in Indiana that run sprints once or twice a month.

Q: What do you think of the Racesaver class in general?

Ethan: When you get on a track like Eagle Raceway, where it’s racy and continuous, it makes it a lot of fun. And when you get 20 cars out there running side by side every single lap, it makes it a lot more competitive when the cars are so equal.

Q:  Do you like the fact that the Racesavers are teched so tightly?

Ethan: Oh yeah! If they didn’t tech them like they do now, it would end up like the 305 class at some other tracks where people are spending twenty five to thirty thousand dollars on a motor that there’s no reason to spend that kind of money on.

Q: Is this year your first time at the Sprint Nationals?

Ethan: No, we raced last year also.

Q: What was your impression of the event?

Ethan: It was a lot of fun. Very professionally run for sure. Everybody loves to race hard and clean at the same time, and that’s what made it such a blast!

Q: What did you think of the 3-wide start?

Ethan: When I ran micros a couple of years ago at Macon, we had a start that was 4 wide! That was one of the craziest things I’ve ever done. The 3-wide at the Nationals makes it a great show for the fans. If I was a fan and they told me that they were going to start sprint cars 3-wide, that would make ME jump out of my seat.

Q: What was it like running with drivers from all over the country last year at the Nationals?

Ethan:  Where we race at there’s 14 or 15 cars, then you go to the Nationals and there’s 100 or more cars at the Nationals, it’s almost like the World of Outlaws of the Racesaver class! It makes you such a better driver when you race with those types of guys.

Q: Are you looking forward to coming to the Nationals this year?

Ethan: Oh yeah!! Even more than last year. Last year I missed making the Sunday A Feature by like 3 cars, so I definitely want to come and improve myself and make the big show.

The reward for winning the 2016 Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals just got another boost!

IMCA announced today that they are providing a great big incentive for taking home the win at Sunday's big show!! Whoever crosses that finish line first will get a bonus from IMCA of $50 for every Racesaver IMCA race that they participated in this season, up to 50 events!!

That means that the winning driver could possibly get not just the $2500 winners part of the purse, but an additional ...$2500 from IMCA, doubling their take to $5000!!!

They will receive the bonus at the annual IMCA banquet, giving them a chance to receive the accolades that they deserve; along with all of the other champions.

If you still haven't pre-entered, you still have time to put your name in the hat for a shot at the win!!

I am lucky enough to work at one of the best tracks
anywhere.

So; it’s Thursday again, and with just 5 weeks left until the 2016 Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals, it’s time for another driver to be introduced to you.

Last week you got to know a little about 18 year-old Ethan Fleetwood from Smithville, Indiana; who is in just his second year of competing in the Racesaver series. Now, this week we speak with John Carney II from ElPaso, Texas. John has been racing for 16 of his 33 years; not just in the Racesaver class, but also in 360’s an...d 410’s; and he wins!. He managed to win almost everything last year at the Nationals in fact, and ended up being crowned the 2016 Racesaver Sprint Nationals Champion.

Q: What’s your opinion of the Racesaver class in general?
John: It’s great. It gives the Saturday night racer a chance to get in and drive a sprint car. The 360’s and 410’s are really getting pretty expensive. For what the payback is for a Racesaver 305 and what it costs to race one weekly, you can kind of find your way along.

Q: How about the tech that you have in the Racesaver class?
John: The tech is the most important part of the class. Everywhere you go it has to be the same, and that’s every track and every race. That’s what makes the Racesaver class what it is; the tech.

Q: What do you think about the Racesaver Sprint Nationals?
John: It’s awesome! Any time you can get together with nearly 100 competitors and race for 3 days; on a great track all 3 days, it’s a lot of fun. To come out on top of a deal like that is really neat.

Q: Do you enjoy the 3-day format?
John: You get a lot of track time, that’s for sure. That’s probably the best part about it; all of the track time. You go to a lot of other races and it’s a lock-in format, with just 1 day of qualifying. You get heats and stuff at those, but with the Nationals, you get heats, preliminary features and A Features for 3 days. The format is tough because you have to draw, then you have to run at the front of your heat to get to the A. But, the heat races are long enough that if you have a good enough car you can get to the front no matter where you start. You get a lot of track time, and that’s the best part of racing; being on the track.

Q: Did you enjoy racing with drivers from all over the country?
John: Oh yeah. This kind of race will bring drivers from all over. It is the biggest Racesaver event, so you have to expect to have that much competition. I would bet we’ll get over 100 easy this year.

Q: What do you think about the 3-wide start for the Big Show on Sunday?
John: That’s pretty crazy that they do that, but as far as I know, it’s been successful every time. The track is wide enough, and the track prep is always on point, so it works. I think that everyone’s mentality going into a 3-wide start is you have to give yourself a few laps, let the cars get spread out before you make your move.

We are just 4 weeks away from the 2016 Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals, and it’s time to meet another one of the drivers who will be competing this year.

We started this series of interviews in the Midwest (Indiana), then moved down south (Texas), and today we head to the northeast corner of the country. This week we get a look into the life of 63 year-old Jeff Taylor, who is from Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Q:        How long have you been running in the Racesaver series?

Jeff:    I think that I originally got involved about the second or third year that French Grimes started it; so I guess for about 15 years now. We also were running 410’s for a little while, jumping around a lot. But the last 5 years or so has been strictly in the Racesavers.

Q:        Do you run with a particular series up there?

Jeff:    I’ve run with 5 different Racesaver series’ out here. I jump around a lot, because I’m not dedicated enough to stick with just 1 series. I like to travel. We’ve been to Ohio, and last week we ran with the group up in New York. We’ve also run with a couple of the Pennsylvania groups, and probably before July is over we’ll go down and run with French’s group down in Virginia.

Q:        Is this your first time running the Sprint Nationals here in Nebraska?

Jeff:    Yes. The last time that we ran the Nationals was in 2011 down at Fork Mountain Speedway down in Virginia when French still was running it.

Q:        What do you think of the Racesaver series?

Jeff:    I quit racing in 2012 through 2014 because I thought I wanted to be a race track owner. We bought a track in central Pennsylvania and ran it for 3 years before we tired of it. We had the Racesaver sprints on our track 3 times a month during that time. The fans loved it, and personally I think it’s a great deal! I like everything that French did with the rules; how he kept things the way that they are. I just think that as long as the rules are enforced the way that they’re supposed to be, by the book, the series is fantastic! I don’t know of any other way to keep a sprint car class equal this way.

Q:       So, the Racesaver rules keep the class fair, in your opinion? Nobody has an engine advantage, correct?

Jeff:    I will give you a prime example of that. I had 2 engines when I quit racing in 2011. I spent $19,000 on one motor and I spent $8,100 on the engine that I won the 2011 Sprint Nationals with. The difference between the two on the dyno was 19 horsepower! So, I basically paid almost $1,000 per horsepower!!!

Q:        Are you looking forward to your trip to Nebraska to run at Eagle Raceway?

Jeff:    Oh yeah, yeah. We watched some videos of the regular races, and then we watched one of the Nationals. We’re excited! A couple of my guys are flying out, and a couple of us are going to drive out. We’re going to hook up with Randy Sterling from Pennsylvania on I-80 and drive out together. So, we’re all excited about coming out. It’ll be fun for sure.

Q:        You saw the 3-wide start on the videos then?

Jeff:    Yeah! As long as I’m not the guy in the middle, I think it’ll be a lot of fun. I never would have tried it at my track, but just watching it on the video was really cool. Definitely something different for sure. Then you throw in all of the other things going on during the night and I know it’ll be a great time.

Q:        Are there a lot of other guys from your area coming out?

Jeff:    Oh yeah. I’ve had calls from a couple of guys from around here just this last week, and I know that there’s probably about another dozen either planning to go or thinking about going. I actually had a guy call me tonight and ask if I could squeeze his car into my trailer, so I told him that somehow we could do it. That was Joe Grandinetti, the head of the TSRS Series here. His granddaughter drives, so we may try to squeeze her car in there also! It’s going to be a riot!!!

I am lucky enough to work at one of the best tracks
anywhere.

Three weeks out from the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals, and we head back to the Lone Star State to speak to 34 year-old Dustin Woods from Forney Texas, who is bringing his #00 sprinter to compete for the win in the Sunday evening “Big Show”.

Q:        How long have you been racing in the Racesaver class?

Dustin:          I started after they had the Racesavers down here. I think it was 2009.

Q:        What do you think of the Racesaver class in general?

Dustin:          I think it’s the greatest deal out there!! Down here in Texas we have the Factory Stocks. The way it is in the Factory Stocks, a decent shock package is around $1100. It just blows my mind that to be competitive you have to spend that kind of money on shocks, carburetors, and stuff. And I’m over here racing a car that I’ve been running for four years; same motor, same wing, same everything 4 years later! And I don’t have near that kind of money in it.

Q:        Do you like the severe tech measures that they have for the Racesavers?

Dustin:          That’s awesome. I really enjoy that. I like the motor rules and all; I just don’t care for the nose wing rule, because I tend to bend front axles a lot; so, if I bend one, I fail the front wing tech. That’s the only rule that I don’t like.

Q:        Is this your first trip to the Nationals?

Dustin:          No, I’ve made the trip twice before; so it will be my third time there.

Q:        What do you think of the event?

Dustin:          It’s the nicest event that I’ve ever been to, sprint car wise, by far! I’ve never seen anything so organized, with the officials, push vehicles and things of that nature.

Q:        Have you enjoyed your experiences at the Nationals?

Dustin:          I was ecstatic last year when I made the feature. I had to race every day just to make it, but my highlight of the whole week was Friday. I ran second fastest time, so I had a smile on my face for a week and a half! My name and “fast time” do NOT go hand in hand. The best part of it was that I didn’t even know anything about it, but someone came up and said “Did you hear your name called?”. I said “WHAT??”. He said “They announced that you had second fast time!”. I told them they had to be lying, but later on I got confirmation of it. So; any time somebody brings it up, that’s the highlight of the whole deal.

Q:        There are a lot of Racesaver racers down around where you’re from, right?

Dustin:          Oh yeah! I have more laps in a Racesaver sprint car than anybody else in the country; I promise. I’ve competed for the National points championship since it started, so I raced probably an average of 50 nights a year. I decided not to chase it this year. I teamed up with another guy last year, and since we teamed up he just shows up to drive. I take care of the cars, I maintain them and everything. It’s a lot more cost efficient to do it for two cars everywhere. I don’t have to travel nearly so much. He’s freshly married, and I’m still single.  It’s nice to just do it every once in a while.

Q:        Do you like the 3-day qualifying?

Dustin:          Well, last year I had top points on Sunday, because I’d run tenth in both of the first qualifying days and they were taking nine each day. So I really enjoyed the fact that I had a third shot at it and finally qualified.

Q:        What was it like to race against guys from all over the country?

Dustin:          What I enjoyed about last year was that we had more racers from Texas than we’ve ever had. People got to see what the Texas cars are like. It’s kind of like North versus South at the Nationals, and that’s really cool to see. It makes people think “Man! These Texas guys have some things figured out!!”. But what’s really great is when you go back home and run against those same guys every week; some of them ran second or third or whatever, and every time out he was fast. But then every once in a while I can outrun them locally, and that’s pretty cool to me.

Q:        What do you think of the 3-wide start to the Sunday Feature?

Dustin:          Well, last year I started towards the back, so I didn’t mind it at all. I was in the middle of the last row, and had no problems. It makes it exciting for the fans. Hats off to Roger for the idea; he’s the best Racesaver operator I’ve ever been around. It’s his voice on the Raceceiver; and I didn’t know that they record that stuff. I didn’t go to the scales once, and I thought “They didn’t tell me to go to the scales”, but I got DQ’ed. So, the next day Roger reviewed the tape and said “I guess I never told you to go to the scales”. So I told him “That’s all I needed to know. I feel much better now”.

Q:        What did you think of the track?

Dustin:          Roger doing all of that work after we had that huge storm roll through; we were knee deep in water and the next day we were racing on the track. THAT was impressive! This is the other thing that I love about Nebraska, and we’re not used to that down here. You never see a better, more consistent track than that. I did not change one thing on my car all weekend, and I guarantee you that I did more laps than anybody else at Eagle last year. I ran every race that they had! Every heat I was in, every preliminary feature, the Race of Champions, I raced them all. I think I ended up with 150 laps one night! I ran the Race of Champions, all of those other races. I don’t think I ever got out of the car. But, OH, the way that they work the track! Instead of watering the entrance to the corners, they watered the exit of the corners, and that makes it consistent every time that you go out. It makes it so much easier on people who are from out of town and not familiar with the track. Our tracks down here all are short tracks, that are dry slick and take rubber. You never see that up there.

Q:        Any last thoughts that you want to pass along?

Dustin:          I see you already have over 100 cars registered. I think that eventually you’ll get more cars than the Knoxville Nationals. The best way that I can describe Eagle, is it’s deceiving on video. When you watch the videos you think “Aww…it doesn’t look that big. Those banks aren’t that high. But I’ll tell you how banked it is! They have a water truck that ended up rolling over!! Plus, there’s not math involved in where you’ll be starting; which race you’ll be running in. Eagle is just the best track that I’ve ever been at, and the Nationals are the greatest event I ever saw!!

I am lucky enough to work at one of the best tracks

It’s Thursday again, and that means that we are just 2 weeks away from the 2016 Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals. It also means that we are going to get a little closer look at one of the pilots who will hustle his sprinter around the high banks of Eagle Raceway against a really huge field of others who are planning on taking home the winner’s share of the nearly $135,000 in purse money up for grabs.

This week we speak with an Eagle Raceway regular; 30 year-old Adam Gullion from Lincoln, Nebraska. Adam was the 2015 Champion of the Sprint Series of Nebraska.

Q:        This is your fourth year in the Racesaver class. What do you think of the class overall?

Adam: The class is one that is extremely challenging. It brings challenges every night, no matter what track you go to to run them, and no matter what the conditions are. Everyone is on, for the most part, a pretty level playing field. It seems like over the last 4 years that the competition has gotten exponentially harder. The class has really grown in those 4 years. The competition is just ridiculous. Honestly; in my opinion, I think that the competition is harder now that it ever was in the 360 based sprints. It’s just SO tough to gain something on a guy or girl. You can’t just check out on the field. You can’t get your car too tight, you can’t get it too locked down. Everything is a real fine line.

Q:        Do you think the tech measures are a good deal?

Adam:            I think it is, and I think that it has to be strict; because as soon as there is going to be some grey areas, we are going to take every advantage and every opportunity that we can to get that advantage. I do wish they would change a few things. I think they should allow wing sliders, just for a safety measure and especially when the track gets really slick late at night. You have problems with new drivers who struggle to get their cars tight enough and keep the car underneath them. It ends up playing havoc on a lot of cars. They end up tearing up a lot of equipment just because of inexperience. Wing sliders aren’t that expensive, and it would add a lot of safety. But; as far as how strict they are with the engines, I think they have to be. It’s just like the 360’s. As soon as you start giving someone a little bit of leeway as far as what they can do, that’s when the costs, and the rules, and the grey areas just go out of control. And that’s when you lose the handle on the class. We’re racers. We’re competitive, and if we think we can get an advantage, we’re going to do whatever it takes to play that grey area and get that advantage. To keep the integrity of the class and maintain the direction of the class where it was intended to go, we have to keep the rules strict.

Q:        This will be your fourth Nationals. What do you think of having the event at Eagle?

Adam:            I think it’s great. I think that between the race track and the competition that we have every single week, we rival most race tracks in the country; no matter what class or what motor size they run. I was telling someone the other day that I used to be able to miss the set-up on my 360 and still run top 3 and maybe even dice for the lead in lapped traffic. But, in the Racesavers if you do that you’re a 10th or 12th place car. And that goes back to the fact that the competition level has gotten so high in the Racesavers so quick that you have to be just that much better in a class that was already difficult to be fast in because we’re down on horsepower. It’s going to be hard running 135 cars this year. Hard on the cars, hard on the track. Maybe we need to rethink the format for next year.

Q:        Did you ever think this race could end up being this big?

Adam:            I remember at a pit meeting, I think it was the second year of the Nationals at Eagle; Roger said he told someone from the Knoxville Fair Board that within a few years that the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals would be bigger than the Knoxville Nationals, as far as car count. And, when he said that I believed that it would. I think that we had 100 cars pre-registered last year and this year we’re already almost to 150. It wouldn’t shock me that by the time of the race that it would hit 160 or 170. I doubt that all of those cars will show up, but I do believe that the ones that do show up will be in the 120’s.

Q:        What do you think of the 3-wide start on Sunday?

Adam:            I’ve been a part of it. The first year I thought for SURE that it was going to be a parking lot. But, I think that everyone in that start understands that we are 3-wide, and it is a long race. We cannot win it on the first lap, so the drivers so far have given each other the respect and room that they’ve needed on the race track. With the recent loss of Bryan Clauson, and that it happened so close to here, we all recognize that racing is dangerous. Doing a 3-wide start ups the level just a little bit.

Q:        Any other thoughts that you want to pass along?

Adam:            Every year we start out, we look at what we did the year before; the good things and the bad things. We try to not focus on the bad things and concentrate on the good things. We try to improve on those things. Of course, we try to win races. We started out great with 3 in a row early in the year. But then my crew chief was out for quite a while, and in the hospital. But, we have him back now. I think he came back at a good time for us. We have a few races left before the Nationals that we can sort through things. I made the A for every Nationals so far, and I have no intention of changing that any time soon. The competition has gotten harder, but we’ve been fast; maybe not consistently fast, but still fast. I’ve finished top 10 in 2 out of the last 3 Nationals; the other time I hit the wall and flattened a front tire. We’re going to buckle down; try to get through everything that everyone else has to get through. It takes a lot of luck, but we should be good. I’m looking forward to it. It’s a challenge, but we’ll do our best to rise to the occasion

A week from now the gates of Eagle Raceway will swing open to allow racers from all over the country, and even from out of the country, to try out the high banked 1/3 mile during the practice night. Billed as the “Fastest 1/3 mile in the world”, Eagle Raceway will challenge one and all who come to run at the 2016 Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals.

Today we speak to a young lady who has made a name for herself in her short stint in the Racesaver sprints; Shayle Bade from Lincoln, Nebraska.

Q:        You started racing sprints when the Racesaver class came to Eagle Raceway, right? What is your opinion of the class?

Shayle:          Correct. I’m really glad that Roger Hadan did something like this for the whole racing world. It’s opened doors for a lot of drivers who don’t quite have the budget for a 360 or a 410, plus all of the travelling expenses. I’m glad he offered something cheaper that a lot more people can do. When I was thinking about racing sprints at the end of 2012, Billy Alley was going to sell out his whole operation. He was going to give us a really good deal; brand new cars, brand new motors. So, my dad said that if I could find enough sponsors, that I could do it. Well, you know how hard it was going to be to find that many sponsors. I didn’t have any experience in a sprint car yet; I had come from mini-sprints. I had never been in any kind of sprint, let alone a 360. So; when Roger said he was going to offer the Racesaver sprints, and that it would cut down the price of racing a sprint, my Dad said that we could do that. That was a HUGE deal for me; finally getting into a sprint car. I was as happy as could be! The whole Racesaver class is really taking off. We have so many more drivers at Eagle now; and not just any drivers, but some really GOOD drivers. So; it’s a win, win, win situation all around. You can’t go wrong running in the Racesaver class.

Q:        You’ve raced in all of the Racesaver Sprint Nationals that we’ve had at Eagle Raceway. Did you enjoy the experience?

Shayle:          I LOVED IT!! I’m not going to lie; the 3-wide start really scared me at first. It’s a little crazy, but it works!!! The last 2 years we haven’t had any problems. I qualified each year so far. The first year I qualified on the third night, which was scary. Then at the last Nationals, I qualified on the first night; which was really weird, because I didn’t have to race on the second or third night to try and make the feature.

Q:        So, you think the 3-day qualifying is a good deal then?

Shayle:          I think it’s a really good deal, because it gives more people a chance to get locked-in for the Sunday A Feature. If you have a really crappy night on the first night, and your motor isn’t running right, maybe the second or third night will be better for you. Either way you can have 3 different track conditions, 3 different sets of drivers, so you have lots of variables. I do like the 3-day qualifying.

Q:        What is it like competing with racers from all over, even out of the country?

Shayle:          I really enjoy racing against all of these different drivers, because every state, every different track has its own type of drivers. Whether they’re super-clean and super-fast all of the time, or the dirty just get to the front however they can kind. It’s tough, because you have to adapt to so many different drivers you don’t know at all. Lots of them it’s the first time that you’ve raced against them. Either way, you as a driver have to adapt to all of these new racers. In the end, that makes you a better driver.

Q:        The Racesaver class is all about the tech measures. Are they really necessary?

Shayle:          The rules have to be that tough; as they should be!! The rules are what makes the class. It’s SO hard to get even a little bit extra in the Racesaver class. That is so rare in the sprint car racing world. You can buy a $20,000 360 motor, or you can buy a $60,000 360 motor. The good thing about the Racesaver motor is that the tech is so hard that you have closer racing, the competition is going to be so stiff; which makes it better for the fans to watch and it’s way crazy for the drivers. Everybody is neck and neck, because it’s not the motor. If you have to start at the back of the pack, or even mid-pack, a little extra horsepower isn’t going to help you; and on a slick track it might even hurt you. I really like the strict rules and that is something that the Racesaver class has that no other class does. A rule is a rule; you can be under but you can’t be over. Is that hairline of difference really going to make that big of a difference? Is it worth the chance of a disqualification? No!!

Q:        Any final thoughts that you would like to pass along?
Shayle:          Just that if you can make it out to the Nationals, you really should. It’s going to be a heckuva show.

Since it’s nearly time for the 2016 Racesaver Sprint Nationals, we’ve decided to give you an interview daily, instead of just once a week. Today we learn more about 41 year-old Blake Robertson from Visalia, California.

Q:        How long have you been competing in the Racesaver class?

Blake:            This is my second year. I started racing sprint cars in 1992 when I was 16, and won the National Sprint Car Rookie of the Year. I kind of raced off and on for about 5 years, and then stopped racing because I was involved in our business. We were just kind of hit or miss, running 5 or 6 races a year. Then I raced pretty heavily for a couple of years for another team. I kind of got burned out a little bit, and stopped racing for 6 years. I just didn’t race at all, and was concentrating on our company. BR Motorsports was growing rapidly, and I needed to be here as much as possible. Then the Racesaver class started to arrive out here in California; they were going to start a division out here. And I said ‘You know what man? I would support that 100 percent, because it’s affordable for #1 and it’s not going to be something that I have to do to try and pay my mortgage and I don’t need to take out a second mortgage to be able to buy a car’. I just wanted to support the sprint car industry in general and I thought this was a great way to do it and not have to race every weekend. We started out in September of 2014 with an exhibition race, and we had 4 cars. In March of the following year, 2015, we had 6 cars at the first race and now we have around 25. This weekend they had a 360 race with 18 cars and 4 of them were Racesaver 305’s. We’re seeing the class grow tremendously, and the competition is getting tougher and tougher every week.

Q:        Is this going to be your first year at the Nationals?

Blake:            No, I raced in it last year. I thought it was great! I was amazed by how organized it was run. It all went smooth, even though it did rain Sunday. For Roger to get the race in on Monday was just UNBELIEVABLE! I was in awe. I can’t think of another promoter in the country that would have given the effort that he did. He definitely does a great job. I had a really good time last year.

Q:        Did you enjoy getting to race with people from all over the country?

Blake:             Oh yeah. I talk to hundreds of people every week on the phone in our business. I talk to all of them, and they buy parts from us over the phone, but I never get to form a relationship with any of them. So, it was nice to be able to put a face with the name.

Q:       What’s your opinion of the Racesaver class?

Blake:            With the Racesaver class as a whole, I don’t think that there’s a better organization in the United States. We’ve had guys who’ve had a motor that costs $7,500 and some that cost $20,000 and everybody is competitive. Depending on the skill level of the driver and the chassis; it’s just so much more the driver and set-up than it is the motor.

Q:        Did you like the 3-day qualifying method?

Blake:            Yes. You’re at the mercy of the pill draw, but 15 laps give you enough time. If you’re fast, you’ll be able to get to the front. It’s challenging, but it’s no different than having 1 qualifying night where you start 10th and have to get to the top 4, but you only have 8 laps to do it. I don’t know how Roger is going to handle all of the entries this year, but he’s the promoter and I’ll let him handle it.

Q:        The 3-wide start; are you a fan of it?

Blake:            I was really bummed last year because I got into a wreck with 2 laps to go in the B Feature, so I didn’t even get to get into the A. I wanted to try the 3-wide start, because I think it’s amazing. The track is plenty wide. I was a little skeptical before I saw the track, but after I saw the track I said ‘Oh! This is plenty wide’.

Q:        The tech measures in the Racesaver class. Having to go through all of the pre-race inspection just to get to race the Nationals. A good deal?

Blake:            I think it’s amazing. There are so many different organizations across the country that have their own rules, and they don’t abide by them. Well, they do, but I can’t remember the last time that I saw a car get really teched, other than the Racesavers. They might look at a tire, or roll them across the scales, but that’s it. They’re not checking fuel, they’re not checking cubic inches; it’s just one thing after another. And it’s let the higher end classes skyrocket in price. I commend the tech people and the people who run the Racesaver class, because it’s the only way to keep the cost down and keep it fair. There’s always going to be someone with more money that has to push the envelope. They need to be caught and made an example of whether they’re a pound light on the scales, or if they’ve done something else illegal.

Q:        Are you looking forward to coming to the Nationals this year?

Blake:            I am; I am! We’re preparing now. We still have 2 races before we head out, so we’re pretty excited. We’re looking forward to it. It’s a great track and we’re looking forward to getting 4 days on the track, making the feature and putting on a good show for the fans.

So far, we’ve visited with drivers from all over the US; but, today we leave the confines of our country and speak with Bart Kendell from Turtleford, Saskatchewan. Bart attended the 2015 Nationals, but had some bad luck and ended up destroying the sprinter that he was driving.

Q:        Do you run the Racesavers up there in Canada?

Bart:   We don’t call them Racesavers up here. We don’t have that program yet. We call them the Sportsman Class, but it’s basically the same rules; other than the spec head.

Q:        What’s your opinion of the Racesaver class then?

Bart:   I think it’s a great deal, and I just hope that they adopt it up here. I’ve been lobbying for it, and a couple of guys are running them up here. They’re very competitive with our class, but they’re maybe not front runners; more mid-pack runners. If everybody up here would adopt the Racesavers, then we could all travel together. There’s other guys who want to come down with me to race at the Nationals, but we have the motor issue. It would be awesome if we could adopt the Racesavers up here.

Q:        How do you feel about the strict Racesaver tech measures?

Bart:   From what I know about it, I like it. As soon as we got to the track last year we went over and started watching them do all of the tech. I don’t have any experience with any other track doing that, but I thought they did a really great job of keeping things fair.

Q:        What did you think of the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Nationals?

Bart:   I love the Nationals. I can’t wait to come back to Eagle. It was a great event, and a great experience. It was my first year there, but I really enjoyed the whole event. It was run very well, and we were very impressed with everything about it.

Q:        Did you enjoy competing with drivers from all over the US?

Bart:   I think that is what was so interesting and intriguing for me; to come down and see the caliber of racers and teams that were there were way higher than what I’m used to in Canada. And it was nice to come down and see all of the teams from all across the states racing sprinters, and getting to see what everybody else was doing as far as their setups and getting to meet everyone and get some new ideas.

Q:        What was your opinion of the 3-day qualifying?

Bart:   For us, being from so far away and travelling so far, it was sure nice to have a practice day on Thursday, which was really nice; having a chance to get comfortable. Since we’re running somebody else’s car (Keith Dragoo) when we come down, to have that feel-out day on Thursday and then getting 3 chances to qualify is really nice. It gives a guy like me who travels 4 days round trip to get that extra lap time. I’m coming down for the enjoyment 100 percent. I may not be the caliber of racer who maybe will be in the money, but the 3-day qualifying is just extra track time for me, which is awesome.

Q:        What did you think of the 3-wide start to the A Feature on Sunday?

Bart:   That’s awesome. I hope that they do it again this year. Pretty exciting! That 3-wide start; I think that the fans….that’s what it’s all about. The fans are getting a show, beyond a show. It’s above and beyond what most people are used to. I’ve been to see the World of Outlaws multiple times, but the first time I saw it 3-wide for sprint cars I thought it was just awesome.

Q:        Any thoughts you would like to pass along to the fans?

Bart:   Well; I hope that I can redeem myself. I caught a little bit of the wall going down the back stretch last year and absolutely DESTROYED Keith’s car. I’m coming back this year to redeem myself. I want to send a shout-out to the Dragoos. They’re the only reason that I’m able to come down for the Nationals. They’re amazing people, and they’re allowing me to come down and run one of their cars. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and this time I know what’s coming ahead. It should be a lot more fun. Last year we lost my brother 3 days before I got there, so my mind wasn’t really focused on the racing. But, this year we can have some real fun.
