Thumbs Up:
*Inaugural race at Husets Badlands Speedway *47 410 sprints (well, actually about 40 plus about 7 360's but whatever..) *Pretty much a rebuilt facility. about 3/4 of everything is brand new *All new catch fence. I wonder if the gave Butch Hansen the pole from the front stretch that he bent so badly years ago. *The track employee at the north gate who grabbed a handful of tickets to sell outside the little booths in order to speed up the line. When I got there, the line was a couple hundred feet long. *A ginormous crowd. *New, clean bathrooms! *Designated smoking areas. I've been smoking other people's cigs there for years *The most entertaining T-shirt Gatling gun. It worked as well as anything made by a random crazy inventor in the movies. Maximum range about 20 feet- when it didn't misfire. *The back-up plan- a guy walking the midway that passed t-shirts 100's of feet up into the stands. *A flyover by the Vanguard squadron ethanol planes after the National Anthem. *17 street stocks! and everyone one of them fast. *Street stock heats had lots of battling for position *87 Ackerman checking out during his street stock heat while Z71 Olivier and 64 Yeigh battled for 2nd. *1 Travis Schreures checking out in his street stock heat while 97 had such handling problems that it must have been a thrill ride behind the wheel *Randy Jamison in the crowd. He's the guy who has been doing the construction on the track 24/7. I hope he got free beer. *Full moon *8-10 top tier 410's in the house *Aussies 29 Kerry Madsen & 12 Jeffries(did I spell it right Mike?) chasing down 05 Loyett in their heat race. 29 won #7 sprinter doing wheelies in his heat race *Drunks trying, and failing, to keep time with "We will rock you" *19 holding off 3, then 55 to win 5th sprint heat *Flashing yellow and red lights around the track. I say this is a great safety improvement over used traffic lights *24 car B-main for the sprints *Taco Johns has a promotion where they spin the wheel, and if the car in that starting position wins the feature, everybody gets a free taco. Corey Mack won the B. His position- 21st starting- was the number spun. So if he had passed 20 cars to win, we could have had free tacos. But then monkey might fly out of my butt too. No matter, Taco Johns was probably closed by then. *Hey old-man? What did you do to celebrate your birthday? Craig Hanisch celebrated his 49th birthday by winning $2000 for the street stock feature. 56 lead early before 45 took lead. The next 10 cars back raced in a tight formation 2 & 3 wide. Do you suppose Craif was in clean air? *Craig got out in victory lane and check the bodywork on the car. *A country boogie version of Black Betty, or weird speakers? $1910 50/50 winner- not me. If I could have found the 50/50 booth, it would have been higher. *17B Bickett came from way in the back of the B main and transferred to the back of the A where he passed a lot of cars. Surely he passed more than anybody last night. *29 Madesn getting ready to challenge early leader 24 McCarl in the A until tangling with a spun car. *The best 410 sprint feature I've seen in many a moon. *82 Zomer went from 3rd to 1st in one lap, before a yellow came out and negated his pass for the lead. *My notes of the lead look like this: McCarl lead from pole Zomer yellow flag McCarl restart lead Zomer McCarl Dobmeier 13 McCarl Dobmeier Zomer flipping out of 2nd place Dobmeier restart lead going on to win.
Thumbs Down:
*The time. The final green flag fell at 12:40 a.m. Sunday morning *Countdown to race time ended with the street stocks slogging through the mush *8:40 PM Sharp! time trial start *a 20 minute break after the street stock heats to get the line-ups worked out for the sprint heats???? *a 30 minute grader intermission *First sprint heat pushed off at 9:43 *Sprints got the green for the A feature at 12:15 *A lot of broken sprint cars- 92 blew motor, 19 smacked the wall, 0 flipped at flagstand, 47 smacked wall and flipped, 51 flipped in B main, 82 flipped out of 2nd place *The new stands are tighter, and closed on the bottom. You are forever standing up to get up close and personal with the folks trying to get by, and all the garbage piles up. After 5 hours sitting there I was ready to be done. *A lot of dust kicks up off the concrete infield. I don't know if that gets better with use or not. *No pit reporter. The race last night- a big race with way too much downtime- could have used a Hot Rod Pattison *No interview in victory lane for Craig Hanisch. Wasn't this also the biggest paying street stock race in the state? *The mystery yellow during sprint heat #4 *The security at the north end takes their job a little too seriously. A friend wanted to go out and get a blanket for his 10 year old daughter. Another friend I spoke with wanted to go out and shop at the Dobmeier T-shirt trailer. Both were told that if they went out, they'd have to buy another ticket to get back in. Oops! That's not exactly fan-friendly. *that was the loudest race I have ever attended. *After the race, music was cranked up top of the volume. 200 feet from the speakers in the pits it was still painful. I bet a lot of Brandon residents were pleased about that at 1 o'clock in the morning *A lot of people left early. I felt really sorry for people with younger kids.
This N That:
*I parked about half way to Valley Springs *8:39 before Shawn said Husets Speedway instead of Badlands *I had my jacket and such in a green canvas bag. Mr. Observant security guy says "I need to look in your purse". I would have thought the balding head, mustache and pot belly would have given some different clues to my gender. He did catch himself quick and corrected himself. I was half tempted to ask which restroom he thought I should identify with. *I saw a guy crying in front of the Pizza Ranch booth. He was muttering something about "feeling the heat". *Craig Beasly makes me miss Mark Tasler. I know, I know. He'll get better. He'll realize it's a racetrack and not WWE. *The sound system is not finished. Just as well, as the music has taken a turn for the younger crowd or the Badlands/ apocalypse crowd? The latter half of the races seemed to be a repeating track of the same songs. *They had beer and liquor available. The beer was $5 a can and it looks like they sold a lot. I saw a guy carrying a suitcase of Coors light. That's like a $120 investment! *Can't they put the driver names & such on the electronic billboards during time trials where you can't hear anything? *Why isn't Robby Wolfgang's wing at an angle like last year? *It was still bumper to bumper traffic after 1 o'clock *It's been a really long time since I had to sneak into the house at a quarter to 2 in the morning. *Walking to my car at 1;00 am, I saw a camper in the north lot. It had a slide-out section that was the dining area. Some smaller kids were there eating cereal with milk. Always after me Lucky Charms!
All in all it was a great feature list. I'd pay $30 to see a race like that again. However, if I knew it would take 4 hours and 45 minutes to run the show, I might just save my money. There's definitely room for improvement.

Robbie Wolfgang: I was wondering the same thing when he ran at Iowa State Fairground last year. I don't get to see him run much anymore but he runs Wolfweld chassis last I knew. Nice to see him and Doug try something different, and Doug still involved in the sport.

It looked like the car had XXX stickers on the frame tubes where most of the chassis stickers are placed. Not 100% sure on that but it looked like it.

The 305 that Robby and Doug run has the offset wing angle....that's a car they own. The 410 he ran on Saturday is owned by a guy Robby has driven for before (his name escapes me right now).

Murphy has posted the thumbs up/thumbs down report for years on the nmra board. Always a good monday morning read and reminder of everything that happened the night before.
