Stephen Allard runs Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge
By Gary Thomas
Elma, Wash - September 18, 2007... Chico, CA veteran Stephen Allard competed this past Friday and Saturday at the 1st ever Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge in Elma, WA. For the weekend Stephen took the wheel of the Van Dam Dairy, Shareway Industries, Haugen Dairy No. 33v, the same machine driven by Enumclaw, WA’s Henry Van Dam who was injured in a accident over Memorial Day weekend at the Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, OR.
On Friday night the team battled through engine problems and failed to make the feature, but Saturday saw them change engines and the difference was night and day. Saturday’s Brownfield Memorial Challenge finale at Grays Harbor Raceway saw Stephen qualify sixth fastest out of 46 cars aboard the GMS Metal Works, Napa Auto Parts No. 33v.
The ‘07 Silver Dollar Speedway champ then drove from the third row in the second heat race to score an impressive victory. On a normal night this would have been good enough to put Stephen into the dash, but the weekend as a whole was going on a points format to line-up main events on Saturday. The previous night hurt Stephen in the scope of things, but at least he found himself starting near the front of the B-main.
Lining up third in the B, Stephen carved his way to front and brought home the win to transfer the Van Dam Dairy, Rocket Chassis machine into the 40 lap main event. SA started 17th and was poised to move forward, but before the midway point he was collected in somebody else’s mess and tipped over. The damage was too severe to continue and Stephen retired from the event. It turned out to be a disappointing end to the weekend, especially with how much speed Stephen had on Saturday night.
