DENVER -- Ron Roenicke was worn out from watching the baseball soar so much in just one game. The Milwaukee Brewers skipper cant even begin to imagine playing half his games in this hitter friendly park. "Theres just so much that happens," Roenicke said. Especially on a humid night with no wind blowing. The baseballs were flying like the old days, before the humidor came into existence at Coors Field. Jean Segura homered twice and Ryan Braun had three hits in his 1,000th career game, helping the Brewers hold off the Colorado Rockies 13-10 on Friday night. "There are a lot of good ballparks to hit in. There are," Roenicke said. "But those balls were crushed." Indeed, they were. Khris Davis homered and Carlos Gomez extended his hitting streak to 16 games as the Brewers scored their most runs of the year and tied a season high with 19 hits. Segura said hes never had a multihomer game before Friday. He could definitely get used to hitting here. "Everybody likes hitting in this park," Segura said. "This place is great for hitters. Its amazing how balls go off the bat here, just go out in the field so quickly." Marco Estrada (6-4) was noticing the same thing. He didnt feel like he pitched all that bad. But then he looked at his line for the night -- seven runs in 5 2-3 innings and a career-most 10 hits -- and he cant help but wince a bit. "I still think I threw the ball really well," Estrada said. "Nothing you can do about it, just keep going." In their first game since being no-hit by Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, the Rockies got their league-leading offence back on track with a 16-hit evening, which included homers from Justin Morneau, Corey Dickerson and Brandon Barnes. Morneau finished with five RBIs. "Guys turned the page pretty well," manager Walt Weiss said. "(The no-hitter) was long forgotten when the game started." Christian Bergman (0-2) was roughed up as he allowed seven runs in three innings. The righty departed soon after taking a liner off the base of his left hand. "Its fine," Bergman said. "Its not broken, its just really swollen. Hopefully it cools down in the next couple of days." Roenicke had a feeling it was going to be a long night when the teams combined for 13 runs and 16 hits in the first three innings. "I thought it was going to be a big number (to win)," Roenicke said. About then, Estrada began to find his groove. He pitched three straight scoreless innings to give Brewers hitters a chance to open a gap. Milwaukee took the lead for good on Seguras second homer of the game in the third. The Brewers were leading 11-6 in the sixth when Dickerson hit a two-run homer -- his fourth hit of the game. An inning later, Barnes lined a two-run homer to make it 12-10. Milwaukee reliever Will Smith found himself in a precarious situation in the eighth. With two on and one out, Segura made a nifty play in the hole to snare Morneaus grounder and threw to second for a forceout. Smith then struck out Wilin Rosario to end the threat. Francisco Rodriguez struck out two of three in ninth for his 24th save in 26 chances. Gomez finished with three singles to stretch his streak of safely reaching base to 33 straight games. That ties him for the fifth-longest streak in franchise history. Braun was 3 for 6 with two doubles. He was booed each time he stepped to the plate in the wake of his suspension last season following Major League Baseballs investigation into the Biogenesis drug scandal. NOTES: Milwaukee, the best road team in baseball, improved to 4-1 on its seven-game trip. ... The Brewers will throw RHP Wily Peralta (7-5) on Saturday against LHP Christian Friedrich, who will be making his season debut. Friedrich missed most of last season with back inflammation. ... Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado (broken left middle finger) said his recent X-ray came back clean and that he hopes to begin batting as soon as next week. He put on his glove again Friday. "Felt a little weird," Arenado said. "But it felt good."

The Serb outlasted Rafael Nadal to defend his Australian Open title in the longest ever Grand Slam final and become the fifth man to win three straight majors in the Open Era. ASHBURN, Va. -- No sense fooling around with a talent like Robert Griffin III. Barely a week after the draft, the Washington Redskins are already proclaiming the Heisman Trophy winner their No. 1 quarterback. Saying that Griffin has the ability to do things no one else has done in the NFL, coach Mike Shanahan wrapped up a rookie minicamp Sunday by putting RGIII squarely atop the depth chart. "Hes the starter. Period," Shanahan said. Shanahan said Griffin will begin working with the first-teamers when the veterans reconvene for off-season workouts later this month. Fourth-round pick Kirk Cousins and last years starter Rex Grossman will share snaps to sort out the second- and third-string spots. Shanahan said the Redskins didnt go through all the trouble to get Griffin -- trading three first-round picks and a second-rounder to the St. Louis Rams for the No. 2 overall spot -- just to have him play backup. The coach said he made the decision even before the three-day minicamp. "Were going to adjust our system to what he feels comfortable with," Shanahan said, "and well watch him grow and well do what we feel like he can do and what he does the best. ... One thing the NFL is not used to is a quarterback with his type of speed and his type of throwing ability, so I think we can do some things that people havent done." With his announcement, Shanahan managed something thats hard to do -- overshadow Griffin himself. Sunday was the first chance for reporters to see Griffin practice in a Redskins uniform, an event that attracted some 60 members of the media to a 90-minute session consisting mostly of undrafted, unsigned players trying to earn a spot at training camp. Griffin wore the familiar No. 10 that he wore at Baylor, with the moniker "Griffin III" on the back. His shoes were gold with burgundy laces. Hes known more for his colorful collection of socks, but he went with the standard white. As usual, his sound bites were spot on. "Its been a while since weve been able to do football things," he said. "Weve been doing combines and beauty pageants on pro days, so its time to get to football." Griffin referenced the challenges he might have as a rookie starting quarterback dealing with veterans. With his disarming smile, he said he even has extra pairs of his shoes, in case the vets want them. "I cant come in flamboyantly, and I dontt plan to," he said.dddddddddddd "Come in and earn the guys respect. Even if they say youve already got it, youve still got to go out and earn it." The selection of Cousins raised eyebrows around the league -- no team had taken two quarterbacks in the first four rounds since 1989 -- but Griffin said he was given advanced notice from Shanahan that the Redskins were looking at making such a move to give the team solid, young depth at the position. Griffin and Cousins roomed together at the team hotel this weekend and will likely do so again at training camp. "We went over the playbook together. Theres no issues there," Griffin said. "Were both out there trying to get better, so were cool. We ate a burrito together." "Not the same burrito," he added with a laugh. "Just to clear that up." Cousins, a three-year starter at Michigan State, was no doubt hoping to be drafted by a team that would give him a realistic chance at a starting job in the near future. As it is, he realizes hes likely to be stuck behind Griffin for the entire length of a four-year rookie contract. "The cream always rises to the top, so if Im as good as I hope to be someday, then Im going to get that opportunity, whether here or somewhere else," he said. "But right now I have a great opportunity to develop and to learn and to grow." According to Shanahan, Griffin was everything a coach could love during the five practices that made up the minicamp. The rookie had studied in advance and arrived with a rudimentary knowledge of the playbook. "You can see what an incredible athlete he is," Shanahan said. "I was impressed because the first day we didnt have one bust with a formation or a play call, and I dont think I ever had that in any minicamp that Ive been involved with." Notes: The Redskins signed their two sixth-round draft picks: RB Alfred Morris from Florida Atlantic and T Tom Compton from South Dakota. ... They also signed five college free agents: WR Brian Hernandez from Utah, DL Delvin Johnson from Marshall, WR Samuel Kirkland from Kent State, OL Nick Martinez from Oklahoma State and TE Beau Reliford from Florida State. ... The team waived college free agents DL Vaughn Meatoga and WR Kelvin Bolden. ... Third-round draft pick Josh LeRibeus, mostly a guard in college, was used as a centre during the rookie camp.
