BEREA, Ohio -- Johnny Manziel waved both arms as if he was quieting the home crowd before a big play. Really, he just wants to fade into the background a bit. Good luck with that. Beaten out by Brian Hoyer to be Clevelands starter, the Browns rookie quarterback said Wednesday that hes disappointed he wont be on the field against Pittsburgh in the season opener on Sept. 7. Manziel knows he didnt do enough during training camp and the preseason to convince coach Mike Pettine to choose him over Hoyer, who overcame a serious knee injury and then held off the first-round draft pick to keep the job. Manziel believes the focus should be on Hoyer. "Im the backup quarterback," Johnny Football said. "I shouldnt be in the spotlight." It always seems to find Manziel though, and that will likely remain the case even if hes on the sideline watching Hoyer. Manziel said he has no regrets about the way he approached his competition with Hoyer, which ended after the Browns coaching staff met Tuesday night to evaluate Clevelands two quarterbacks, both of whom have performed poorly. Manziel was criticized for some weekend partying, but the former Heisman Trophy winner insisted he wouldnt change a thing. Hes growing and maturing and hopes to one day lead an NFL team. This is all new to him. "Ill learn how a season goes," he said. "Now next time I come into training camp I wont be surprised by it. Next time I come into OTAs, I wont be surprised by it. But I wouldnt go back from the point after the draft to now and change a single thing. Im going to continue to live my life and the off-season is the off-season. Im going to travel places, Im going to go places, Im going to do things and thats going to have no effect. "Obviously I need to do it in the proper way, but Im still going to continue to have fun in my life and continue to live my life, and I dont think any of that really slowed me in this competition. I think more than anything, if you come out and play well, it makes the decision a lot easier." Pettine announced in a release before practice Wednesday that hell go with Hoyer, who made three starts in 2013 before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last season. Pettines decision ends weeks of competition and analysis, and the Browns are hoping it will allow Hoyer to relax and build some chemistry with Clevelands struggling offence before they meet the dreaded Steelers, their long-time rivals. The Browns play their first home preseason game on Saturday against St. Louis. Hoyer was informed by Pettine just moments before a team meeting. Hoyer said he didnt even have enough time to call his family. Its a dream come true for the six-year veteran, who grew up in Cleveland rooting for the Browns. "For me, its excitement," Hoyer said. "This is what I worked for for a whole year to get back to. Obviously, its good to move forward and move on with the decision being made and get back to work and get ready for St. Louis. Like I said all along, its been my mentality this whole off-season and training camp to come out here and act like the starter and be the starter and now that its official we can move on."

Anthony Bennett Authentic Jersey. Glen Perkins pitched another tenuous ninth inning but got his 19th save in 22 tries after giving up two runs to blow one the night before. Adam Eaton led off with a triple and scored on Gordon Beckhams sacrifice fly. Pinch-hitter Paul Konerko then smacked a single up the middle, but Perkins struck out Jose Abreu and Adam Dunn to end it and punctuated the final swing and miss with a big pump of his left arm.

Tyus Jones Jersey.Y. -- Dont rule out Niagara Falls as a potential future home of the Buffalo Bills.NEW YORK -- It was an opening night of daring moves and dangerous choices. With the 32 NFL teams trying sort things out before the league tells them how to operate now that the lockout has been lifted, it was the Atlanta Falcons who made the boldest deal in Thursday nights first round of the draft. The Falcons traded away four picks, including two No. 1s, to get Clevelands No. 6 spot and jumped on Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones. "It was an aggressive, bold move to get up from 27 to six," conceded Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff. "We knew it was going to cost us. As an organization we felt very strongly about the move for a player who truly adds the explosive, urgent athleticism were looking for to improve on this team." The hope is Jones will complement All-Pro Roddy White and give quarterback Matt Ryan another game-breaking threat. The Falcons, by the way, had the best record in the NFC last year and were knocked out of the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers. Teams desperate for quarterbacks like Tennessee and Minnesota may have been reaching with their choices. While the Carolina Panthers went for Auburns Cam Newton with the No. 1 overall pick, three other quarterbacks were in the top 12 -- and not in the order they were projected. Jacksonville, which needs someone to replace the inconsistent David Garrard, traded up six spots for Washingtons No. 10 pick and went for Missouris Blaine Gabbert, considered a strong, accurate passer. Before that, the Titans defied many draft experts by going for Washingtons Jake Locker at No. 8. He returned for his senior year, and his workouts did not produce rave reviews. Nonetheless, new coach Mike Munchak is a Locker guy. Well see how he feels in a few years. "I just pictured myself in the huddlee with this guy and thought, Man, these guys will love playing for this guy," Munchak said.dddddddddddd "I think he has got something special like that that hell bring out the best in other players." An even bigger surprise came from the Vikings, who went for Florida States Christian Ponder at No. 12. Ponder is short by QB standards (6-foot-2) and needs work on the deep pass. Vikings vice-president for player personnel Rick Spielman said the asking price was too high to trade up to get Gabbert. So they went with Ponder. "Quarterback was a huge need for us," he said. "Everybody knows that." In a normal year, free-agent signings and pre-draft trades might have helped teams looking for quarterbacks. Kevin Kolb, Donovan McNabb, Marc Bulger and Matt Hasselbeck could have been available, but the lockout that was just lifted prevented any player movement before the draft. That, of course, could change Friday, when the NFL will tell its clubs how to proceed with player transactions. Another big surprise came when the Detroit Lions went for Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley with the No. 13 pick. The Lions probably figured, "Why change a good thing?" Last year, they took DT Ndamukong Suh at No. 2, and he went on to make the APs All-Pro team. Fairley was once considered a top-five pick, but his stock slipped because of questions about his desire to play all out all the time. Schwartz was happy to see him still around. Then again, he could end up as part of a trade in the next few days. There were several other trades involving draft picks, but nothing out of the ordinary, other than Commissioner Roger Goodell being booed and fans chanting, "We want football!" For now, theyll have to settle for the draft.
