FIFA has confirmed a case against Franz Beckenbauer is being examined by the adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee.
Beckenbauer, a former World Cup winner as player and coach with West Germany, was on the committee that chose the hosts for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, which were controversially awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively.
In the same announcement, FIFA said Angel Maria Villar, who has been a vice president on FIFA's committee since 1998, also is being investigated. He is the most senior UEFA official not currently suspended, with president Michel Platini provisionally banned after receiving a payment of two million Swiss Francs from FIFA president Sepp Blatter in 2011. Villar headed up meetings at the UEFA ExCo last week in Platini's absence.
