Mark Zuckerberg moves forwards very fast. And he isn't afraid to break things at all.
Never mind making money on mobile, a year ago Facebook didn't even have a decent mobile app. The social network was focused on its desktop user experience. Its chief executive had to turn on a dime when he saw user growth exploding on smart phones. Facebook totally rebuilt its mobile app and invented an advertising business on top of it.

Fast forward to the fourth quarter, and not only has Facebook's user experience on smart phones and tablets improved drastically, it also is generating big and rising sales. Mobile advertising revenue was $306 million in the quarter, versus $12 million two quarters before, according to a J.P. Morgan estimate.

Meanwhile, predictions that Facebook's cool factor is declining aren't appearing in user numbers. Despite already reaching a sizable proportion of the world's population, user numbers keep rising. Overall monthly active users leapt to 1.06 billion as of Dec. 31, up another 50 million from the prior quarter. The subset of mobile users rose 13% to 680 million.

There are concerns: Desktop advertising revenue fell compared with the prior year, likely due to user shifts to mobile as well as changes to desktop advertising products. Also, about 5% of revenue was the result of a one-time accounting change. Last, growth in mobile advertising seemed to slow during the quarter—based on comments from October's call that Facebook was generating about $3 million a day at the end of the third quarter.
The huge user numbers combined with the opportunity from nascent advertising products means Facebook still has plenty of potential. But, now trading at around 10 times estimated 2013 revenue, there is a lot of success in the price already.
