Madden NFL 26 Beginner Tips
Blog Submitted by videogame on 08/19/2025 at 7:58 PM Report Blog

Madden is one of the longest-running video game series of all time, but any entry can be somebody's first (or their first in a long time). Madden NFL 26 retains many of the same beats and mechanics of former Madden's, but it has a little bit of its own quirks, too.

Getting good at any sports game is going to take skill, whether you're getting good at playing against the computer, or at playing against other players. There's going to be some rough times when you first start out, but if you stick with it and keep a few things in mind, you'll be improving in no time.

Find The Right Passing Style For You

There are four different passing types in Madden 26, and they all have some minor and major differences in how they function. It's a good idea to try all of them out in practice or in Exhibition games to get an idea of which one you'd prefer to use.

Classic is the old-school passing method.
Revamped is a slightly more in-depth passing method.
Placement puts a slightly bigger emphasis on player skill, but with ratings still coming into account.
Placement and Accuracy almost entirely puts the focus on player skill over player ratings.

Some of these passing styles are more difficult to use than others; it might be worth starting with the Classic passing style, and once you've got a better hold on route combination and coverage, switching to a passing style that gives you a little bit more control.

Don't Always Hold Sprint

It can be tempting to hold the sprint button at all times. Being fast is good, right? This issue is that sprinting with a player, whether it's a ballcarrier or a defender, is going to limit their options. For one, it's harder to change directions while sprinting. You'll be less reactive, and that can cause you to give up a lot of big plays.

In the case of a running back, sprinting can make it a lot more difficult to find the running lanes. Sometimes it takes a block a split-second to develop, or you'll need to change direction to hit the hole. If you're sprinting, you might get there too early, or you might not be able to change direction into the hole.

On defense, sprinting can be very detrimental when you're trying to wrap someone up on a tackle. You'll want to break down in front of them most of the time, rather than sprint directly at them and have a higher chance of them making you miss.

Try A Variety Of Playbooks

There are a lot of playbooks in Madden, one offensively and defensively for every team, as well as a handful of others to choose from. All of these playbooks have a unique combination of sets, formations, and plays, and they'll have a huge influence on your playcalling.

You can also create custom playbooks in the Creation Center. Try out a few playbooks, and see which one fits your fancy. Certain playbooks will work better with some rosters than others, and you'll want to find what fits best with how you play, and the players that you have access to.

Use Hot Routes On Both Sides

Hot Routes have been around in Madden for a long time, and they've grown in possibilities and complexity for a while. Before a play, you can hit Triangle or Y to bring up the Hot Routes option on offense, or X or A to bring up the Hot Routes option on Defense.

From there, you can either change the route or the assignment on offense and defense, respectively.

You'll want to Hot Route receivers on passing plays where you notice something in the defensive formation that you can exploit. You can do this as often or as rarely as you'd like, but the better you get at reading defenses, the more often you'll want to Hot Route.

Don't Overuse The Hit Stick

It can be tempting to use the Hit Stick to rock the ballcarrier as often as you can. This was not particularly punished in older Madden's, but it can be punished here. Many players will make you miss if you try to Hit Stick them.

When using the Hit Stick, take into account what player you're using, who you're trying to Hit Stick, and the situation. If it's an open-field tackle, wrapping them up is usually going to be the better move.

Plan For The Future

If you're playing Franchise mode, you'll want to ensure you're focusing both on how you can win the next game, but also on how your team is going to look in the next couple of years. Both frames of mind can lead you astray, and you'll need to think about both if you're going to find success.

Only planning for the next week can get you into trouble when it comes to Cap Space, and in the average age of your team. Exclusively going after players in the peak of their career likely means they're going to be expensive, and it usually means they'll be approaching thirty years old.

On the flipside, if you value potential over everything else, you might have a difficult time winning any games at all. If you can't find any success on the field, it can be difficult to develop that talent to its full potential.

Packages And Coaching Adjustments

Before you call your play, there are a ton of options available to you; two of the most important are Packages and Coach Adjustments.

Changing the Package is going to change specific personnel that are on the field in that specific set and formation. You can do things like put in your backup Running Back, replace your Fullback with your second Running Back, flip your WRs, and more.
Coaching adjustments will do things like allow your team to waste more time on the clock, make them more aggressive when it comes to catching the ball or gaining more yards, and more. Coaching Adjustments come with Pros and Cons, and you'll only want to enable them at the right time.

Don't Neglect Your Offensive Line

For any mode in which you're building a team, it's important to make sure that you have a good offensive line. Grabbing good Offensive Linemen is not the flashy play, and it isn't particularly exciting. But, if you're O-Line is terrible, your playmakers are going to have a difficult time making plays.

On the other hand, if you've got a great O-Line, you can do a lot of impressive things with players that might not be top-of-the-line, because the O-Line is doing, quite literally, a lot of the heavy lifting.
