Training Camp Previews - National Football Conference NFC EAST Philadelphia Eagles The Eagles are believed to be one of the most aggressive teams during this shortened signing period, and the moves could very well begin even before the team even embarks for Lehigh. Quarterback Kevin Kolb, last years Week 1 starter before eventually being supplanted by the resurrected Michael Vick, has been the subject of widespread trade rumors all throughout the offseason, and its been heavily speculated that the Eagles will quickly move Donovan McNabbs one-time heir apparent once able to do so. Philadelphia also enters the new league year with plenty of money to spend in free agency, much of which may be allotted to a transitioning defense that needs help at cornerback, outside linebacker and defensive end. The Eagles also figure to act swiftly in signing this years draft class, as first-round choice Danny Watkins is expected to step into a starting role at guard right away and fellow rookies Jaiquawn Jarrett and Alex Henery are earmarked as immediate replacements for likely free-agent defections Quintin Mikell (strong safety) and David Akers (kicker). Other youngsters to watch include defensive end Brandon Graham and free safety Nate Allen, both of whom are mending from knee injuries that cut short their rookie campaigns, and second-year linebacker Jamar Chaney. Dallas Cowboys Jason Garretts first training camp as a head coach promises to have its share of intrigue, as the Cowboys will need to do plenty of roster retooling once the league is open for business. Dallas is currently well over the salary-cap threshold as a result of last years unsuccessful spending spree, making high-priced and declining veterans such as running back Marion Barber, wide receiver Roy Williams, offensive linemen Leonard Davis and Marc Colombo and cornerback Terence Newman all possible candidates for release. There are also several spots on new coordinator Rob Ryans defense that need to be filled, most notably on the line and at safety, and the team has placed a high priority on retaining valued left offensive tackle Doug Free, an unrestricted free agent. Its also important that Dallas can get rookie first- round pick Tyron Smith into camp as soon as possible, since the athletic offensive tackle could be ticketed for a major role on the revamped front wall. Also keep an eye on the progress of second-year wide receiver Dez Bryant, who was emerging into a bona fide star before breaking his ankle in December, during the preseason. Washington Redskins Mike Shanahans first camp as Redskins head coach took on a circus-like atmosphere, and such a scenario could play out again with two disgruntled high-profile players -- quarterback Donovan McNabb and defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth -- still on the offseason roster. Washington may have found a quick remedy to one of those problems, however, as reports indicate that the team has a deal in place to trade McNabb to Minnesota for low-round picks. His expected exodus creates a battle between untested fifth- year pro John Beck and one-time Chicago starter Rex Grossman, a free agent whos likely to be re-signed, that figures to be the highlight of the preseason. The Redskins also seem hell-bent on ridding themselves of the underachieving Haynesworth, a constant distraction during Shanahans debut season in D.C., though finding a taker for the highly-paid malcontent may be a chore. The preseason will also serve as an audition for 12 players Washington selected in Aprils draft, several of whom could be in line for key roles. First-round pick Ryan Kerrigan will attempt to convert from a college down lineman to outside linebacker in defensive coordinator Jim Hasletts 3-4 scheme, while fourth-rounder Roy Helu may get a chance to unseat holdover Ryan Torain as the clubs primary running back. Leonard Hankerson, a good-sized third-round choice out of Miami-Florida, should also get a long look in a wide receiver corps that was woefully thin a year ago. New York Giants The Giants head into their preseason preparations with great uncertainty at one key area and a potential major distraction at another. An offensive line that showed signs of age last year looks to be getting an overhaul, with the team releasing two longtime starters in center Shaun OHara and left guard Rich Seubert and signing ex-49er David Baas to fill OHaras post. 2009 second-round pick Will Beatty will get a long look in camp to see if he can handle the role of Eli Mannings blindside protector, which would allow the team to kick incumbent left tackle David Diehl inside into Seuberts old spot. The defensive line will be a place to watch as well during workouts, especially if unhappy end Osi Umenyiora follows through on a threat to hold out in hopes of reworking his contract. Barry Cofields free-agent departure provides an opening at nose tackle, one which inexperienced second-year man Linval Joseph and rookie second-rounder Marvin Austin will be trying to take advantage of. Wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan, Big Blues third-round selection in Aprils draft, may also have an opportunity to step in immediately if the Giants dont re-sign Steve Smith or if the reliable slotman is slow to come back from a concerning knee procedure. General manager Jerry Reeses primary focus in free agency, however, will be to bring back running back Ahmad Bradshaw after the fifth-year pro delivered a 1,235-yard season. NFC NORTH Detroit Lions The Lions will be entering their Allen Park facility brimming with optimism after showing dramatic improvement in head coach Jim Schwartzs second season at the helm. But in order for Detroit to take the next step in its longstanding rebuilding process, keeping talented but fragile young quarterback Matthew Stafford is a must. The 2009 No. 1 overall pick has missed 19 games over his first two pro seasons due to injuries, though recent reports on his surgically-repaired shoulder have been positive, and his health status will be one of the areas to monitor during camp. Dont count on Stafford to see much preseason action, however, considering the Lions also have some injury issues to deal with along the offensive line, with veteran left tackle Jeff Backus expected to miss some camp time with a partial pectorals tear and right- sider Gosder Cherilus coming off a microfracture knee procedure. A trio of rookies from what looks like another strong draft haul will also be worth watching during the exhibition slate. First-round choice Nick Fairley joins 2010 Defensive Rookie of the Year Ndamukong Suh in a potentially dominating tackle duo, running back Mikel Leshoure is projected to share carries with second-year sparkplug Jahvid Best, and second-round wideout Titus Young looks to have the early inside track at the No. 3 receiver job. Detroit does begin the new league year with pressing needs at linebacker and cornerback, voids that may possibly be filled in free agency. Minnesota Vikings After initially intending to start off the post-Brett Favre period with a rookie quarterback, the Vikings shifted gears and decided the experienced route may be the best way to approach the upcoming season. While the somewhat-surprising recent acquisition of 12-year veteran Donovan McNabb wont change Christian Ponders status as Minnesotas intended franchise face, it does ensure that the 2011 first-round draft choices first camp wont be used as a crash course to the pro game. The two signal-callers arent the only newcomers of note on a revamped offense thats now being run by former Falcons QB coach Bill Musgrave, wholl now have to make do without the teams top receiving target after Sidney Rice defected to Seattle via free agency. Expect the Vikes to come up with a replacement during the signing period, with Green Bays James Jones rumored to be on the clubs radar. The biggest issue on defense is up front, where end Ray Edwards and nose tackle Pat Williams are free agents that dont appear likely to return and Pro Bowl Kevin Williams is facing a four-game suspension to begin the season. Brian Robison and new addition Remi Ayodele are the favorites to claim those vacant jobs, with career reserve Letroy Guion expected to get the first crack at filling in for Kevin Williams. One rookie to keep an eye on at camp is tight end Kyle Rudolph, a second-round pick with great upside whos making his way back from a hamstring injury that cut short his junior year at Notre Dame. Chicago Bears Unlike last year, when the Bears were breaking in two new coordinators in Mike Martz and Rod Marinelli, Chicago wont be needing to install any major schematic changes when it gets back to work after the ending of the lockout. That doesnt mean there arent issues that need to be resolved, however. The first and foremost order of business is establishing continuity to an offensive line that yielded a league-worst 56 sacks in 2010. The team is hopeful that first-round draft pick Gabe Carimi can be the answer at the critical left tackle position, while its unclear as to whether longtime center and unrestricted free agent Olin Kreutz will be brought back for a 14th season. A stout defense that helped trigger Chicagos surprise run to last years NFC Championship Game may undergo some retooling as well, with tackle Anthony Adams, linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa and safety Danieal Manning all headed to free agency and the club releasing declining tackle Tommie Harris in February. Rookie Stephen Paea, a second-round choice, and third-year pro Henry Melton will be given shots to win starting jobs along the interior line, while sophomore Major Wright is being groomed as Mannings replacement. Look for rookie quarterback Nathan Enderle, a sixth-round pick out of Idaho, to get a long look in the preseason with current backup Caleb Hanie set to hit the open market next year. Green Bay Packers Since the Packers are rarely players in free agency, itll be primarily up to the members of the reigning Super Bowl champions latest draft class to help plug whatever holes may exist on the roster. One youngster who may have a chance to contribute immediately is second-round pick Randall Cobb, a versatile wide receiver who could offset the likely departure of free agent James Jones as well as handle returns if he shows hes up to the task. Running back Alex Green, a third-round selection, may get a shot at seizing the third- down role if the team elects not to re-sign Brandon Jackson, while a pair of second-year defensive linemen -- Mike Neal and C.J. Wilson -- are the main candidates to fill the void caused by the expected loss of Cullen Jenkins. Theres also a possible opening at left guard if Daryn Colledge leaves as a free agent. The Packers will also use the preseason to see if several key performers that were injured during last years title run are back at playing speed and strength, a list that includes such notables as tight end Jermichael Finley, running back Ryan Grant, safety Morgan Burnett and linebacker Brandon Chillar. NFC SOUTH Tampa Bay Buccaneers The Buccaneers have been conspicuously quiet in free agency in recent years, but that could very well change this offseason. Tampa Bay has a glut of available money to spend and a young and up-and-coming roster that could use an influx of veteran leadership, though dont expect general manager Mark Dominik to stray too far from his philosophy of building from within. The first order of business for Tampa may be to lock up some of its core players due to hit the open market, most notably guard Davin Joseph and outside linebacker Quincy Black, then focus on outside alternatives at need areas such as cornerback, where Aqib Talibs ongoing legal troubles and Ronde Barbers advanced age make that position one to watch. The Buccaneers may also have their sights set on a pass-catching running back to pair with 2010 rookie find LeGarrette Blount, though that spot could be filled if the club can re-sign free agent Cadillac Williams. The preseason will be used to get a number of promising rookies poised to make significant contributions on defense up to speed. If DaQuawn Bowers isnt held back by a previous knee injury that caused the talented Clemson product to slide to the second round of Aprils draft, he and first-round choice Adrian Clayborn could serve as the new bookends on an emerging defensive line, while third-round pick Mason Foster looks to be the heir apparent to anticipated free-agent casualty Barrett Ruud at middle linebacker. Atlanta Falcons The Falcons will open defense of their 2010 NFC South title with a very tenuous situation across the offensive line, as three valued starters -- left guard Justin Blalock, right guard Harvey Dahl and right tackle Tyson Clabo -- enter the post-lockout phase as unrestricted free agents. Though the team is optimistic it can bring at least two members of that trio back, head coach Mike Smith and his staff may have to use this preseason as a proving ground for young reserves such as second-year linemen Mike Johnson and Joe Hawley that may be called into increased roles. Atlanta also isnt satisfied with its situation at defensive end, as evidenced by its unsuccessful attempt to land Carolina pass-rusher Charles Johnson in free agency, so developing players at that spot will also be one of the key goals during camp. The headliner of the newcomers is rookie wide receiver Julio Jones, whom the Falcons traded a bonanza of picks to move up 21 spots to nab with the sixth overall pick of Aprils draft. The physically-gifted former Alabama star will be given every chance to supplant the pedestrian Michael Jenkins as Matt Ryans No. 2 target alongside All-Pro Roddy White. Also keep an eye on fifth-round choice Jacquizz Rodgers, a diminutive yet incredibly productive collegian at Oregon State who may get a crack at becoming the third-down running back, while sixth-rounder Matt Bosher could step in for free agent Michael Koenen as the punter and kickoff specialist. New Orleans Saints Head coach Sean Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis will have plenty of decisions to make in a short window of time, as the Saints begin the new league year with an NFL-high 28 players slated for unrestricted free agency. Further compounding matters is the well-publicized situation regarding Reggie Bush, whos due a whopping $11.8 million as a member of a stacked backfield that got even more crowded with the first-round selection of former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram in Aprils draft. Though its believed the team will cut ties with Bush, establishing a pecking order between Ingram and returnees Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory will be among Paytons chief camp goals. There may be some sorting out to do on the offensive line as well, with a pair of starters -- center Jonathan Goodwin and left tackle Jermon Bushrod -- each potential free-agent defections. The Saints did draft their possible replacements with last seasons choices of Matt Tennant and Charles Brown, and the preseason will help determine whether either is ready to step in. The defensive line may have a new look as well, with rookie first-rounder Cameron Jordan the favorite to start at one end and three-time Pro Bowl tackle Shaun Rogers brought in through free agency. New Orleans also signed ex-Seahawk Will Herring to hopefully fill a void at outside linebacker, where veterans Scott Shanle and Danny Clark both arent expected to return. Carolina Panthers The Cam Newton show is finally about to commence in Carolina, and as soon as the Panthers are able to get the 2011 No. 1 overall draft pick under contract, hell enter a preseason competition with disappointing second- year man Jimmy Clausen and perhaps a yet-to-be-signed veteran to be the teams starting quarterback. Whoever emerges as the winner of that headlining camp battle will be throwing to a developing receiving corps highlighted by four- time Pro Bowl participant Steve Smith, whos now expected to remain on the roster after being the subject of trade rumors for months. The Panthers will also be counting on second-year wideouts David Gettis and Brandon LaFell to make further strides following promising debut seasons and help boost what was a dreadful passing attack in 2010. New defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will oversee a unit that added some beef up front with the additions of ex- Chief Ron Edwards and rookie third-round choice Terrell McClain, plus gets speedy linebacker Thomas Davis back from a torn ACL that cost him all of 2010. There are questions to answer at cornerback, though, especially if the Panthers fail to retain free agent Richard Marshall. NFC WEST Arizona Cardinals When the Cardinals take the field for their initial practice of the 2011 season, theyll probably be doing so without their opening-week starter at quarterback. Its a well-known fact that Arizona is in the market for a veteran signal-caller, with Philadelphias Kevin Kolb presumably the teams No. 1 target, and intends to pull a trigger on a deal in the first few days of the trading period. Once that all-important position is solidified, the Cardinals will turn their attention to other areas on offense, most notably an offensive line where two 2010 starters (C Lyle Sendlein, RG Deuce Lutui) are unrestricted free agents and aging left guard Alan Faneca retired in May. The highlight of camp should be a fierce battle at running back, where highly- regarded rookie Ryan Williams will compete with injury-prone Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower for snaps. Also watch the situation at wide receiver, where Steve Breaston is a free agent whom Arizona may not be able to retain, making this an important preseason for young charges Early Doucet, Andre Roberts and Stephen Williams. On defense, No. 5 overall pick Patrick Peterson is expected to take over one cornerback spot as soon as hes signed, which could make 2009 Pro Bowl participant Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie expendable. Seattle Seahawks Matt Hasselbecks decade-long run as the Seahawks starting quarterback appears to be coming to an end, therefore finding a viable alternative to the anticipated departing free agent will be at the top of a long to-do list as the team begins defense of its NFC West title. Expect Seattle to bring in a veteran to compete with holdover Charlie Whitehurst for the title of Hasselbecks successor, with the club reportedly heavily involved in the sweepstakes for Philadelphias Kevin Kolb. Obtaining a true No. 1 wide receiver also ranks high in importance for the Seahawks, who enter the league year with 22 unrestricted free agents but with plenty of money to spend on the open market, while constructing a cohesive offensive line looms as one of the main goals as well in head coach Pete Carrolls second camp. The unit could have an entirely new right side if a pair of rookies, first-round tackle James Carpenter and third-round guard John Moffitt, sign quickly and are as good as advertised, and the team will also likely be shopping for a cornerback to help shore up one of the leagues worst pass defenses last year. The defensive line is also an area of concern going in, but that could be alleviated if Seattle is able to re-sign impending free agents Brandon Mebane and Raheem Brock. San Francisco 49ers It doesnt look as if Jim Harbaughs going to encounter much smooth sailing as he begins his first season as the 49ers head coach. Not only will the ex-Stanford program architect have a shortened span to implement a new system to a revolving roster, but hell probably be doing so without the teams best offensive player present at the start of camp, with word breaking out that workhorse running back Frank Gore intends to hold out in search of a contract extension. While his absence throws a wrench into Harbaughs plans, it does offer a chance for San Francisco to get an extended look at its two young backs, second-year man Anthony Dixon and rookie Kendall Hunter. The Niners will have returning starting quarterback Alex Smith back in the fold, having signed the former No. 1 overall pick to a one-year contract, though he may be simply just holding down the fort until the team deems athletic rookie Colin Kaepernick, a second-round choice in Aprils draft, ready for action. Both should see plenty of action in the preseason. On defense, the linebacking corps will have at least one new regular following veteran Takeo Spikes departure, with sophomore Navarro Bowman the front-runner for that gig, and a competition between youngsters Reggie Smith and Taylor Mays at strong safety is one of several camp battles expected to take place under the new regime. Another is set to be held at center, where a replacement must be found for free-agent defection David Baas. St. Louis Rams The Rams most significant offseason addition may have come from the coaching ranks, with the organization hiring one-time Broncos head man Josh McDaniels in January to run the offense and help continue the progression of impressive young quarterback Sam Bradford, last years NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Hell first have to sort out a logjam at wide receiver, where rookies Austin Pettis and Greg Salas will battle holdovers Donnie Avery, Danario Alexander and possibly veteran free agent Mark Clayton for snaps in whats expected to be a pass-oriented attack. Tight end Lance Kendricks, a second-round pick in Aprils draft with intriguing receiving skills, could also be in the mix if the ex-Wisconsin Badger can quickly pick up McDaniels scheme. A defense that brought in former Eagles safety Quintin Mikell comes into camp with a few glaring needs, most notably at outside linebacker and tackle, that could possibly be addressed on the free agent front. St. Louis is also known to be in the market for a running back that could help lighten the load of workhorse Steven Jackson, who averaged a career-low 3.8 yards per carry a year ago.
