GLENDALE, Ariz. - Their post-season hopes all but gone, the Winnipeg Jets are content to play spoiler in the NHL Western Conference playoff race. Andrew Ladd scored in regulation and in the second round of the shootout, and Ondrej Pavelec stopped Antoine Vermettes attempt to send the Jets to a 2-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night. Pavelec finished with 28 saves. The Coyotes dropped into a tie for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with the Dallas Stars, who blanked the Capitals 5-0. Dallas has a game in hand with seven to play. Ladds winning shot hit the post and went off Coyotes goalie Thomas Greiss leg and into the net. "Its a game of inches," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "Theres an extra point there youd certainly like to have, but it wasnt for lack of trying. It was a fast, hard, tight hockey game. They got a couple of bounces and we didnt." The Coyotes had chances. Jets wing Blake Wheeler was whistled for a high-sticking penalty with 1:15 left in overtime, but the Coyotes couldnt take advantage and the game went to a shootout. Ladd opened the scoring 10:01 into the first period, firing the puck past Greiss from inside the left faceoff circle. Ladd took a pass from Bryan Little and his wrist shot found the back of the net. Little extended his points streak to seven games. The Jets were coming off a frustrating 5-4 overtime loss at Anaheim the night before and wrapped up a five-game road trip in Arizona. "It was a mental grind for a lot of guys, but I think you look at the Anaheim game, we come up with that win, were looking at a 3-2 (road trip)," Ladd said. "So I think we learned a lot about ourselves this trip and it was nice to finish off this way." Jets coach Paul Maurice said Pavelec was the difference. "We knew it wasnt going to be pretty or textbook," Maurice said. Winnipegs 1-0 lead after the opening frame marked the first time the Coyotes had trailed on home ice after the first period since Jan. 20 against Toronto. The Coyotes evened it up 19 seconds into the second period when Zbynek Michalek scored on a close-range shot with Vermette and Mikkel Boedker assisting. "We played against a team that is below us in the standings," Michalek said. "In a shootout its pretty much about luck. We didnt get the point and weve got to move on." Both teams had good chances in the third period, but shots by Ladd and the Coyotes Shane Doan and Michalek were blocked or sailed over the net during the seventh minute. Boedkers shot with 9:50 left in the third hit the post and bounced away. Dustin Byfuglien misfired with 6:25 to play from right in front of the goal and Phoenix centre Kyle Chipchuras shot was saved by Pavelec with 4:30 left in regulation. "We really cant be worried about them," the Coyotes Keith Yandle said of the Stars. "Theyre a good team, theyre going to win games. We have to do our part and win games." NOTES: The fans in the crowd of 13,724 wore more Jets blue than Coyotes red. The Coyotes heard many "Lets Go Jets!" chants throughout the evening. . The Coyotes were without defenceman David Schlemko (lower body injury), right wing David Moss (ankle) and goalie Mike Smith (knee), who missed his fourth straight game though he is skating in practice. . They have plenty of distance to cover and not much time to do it as they head into the Olympic break. After Fridays game they play four more road contests before the Olympics, then return Feb. 27 at the MTS Centre. But with the hiring of new coach Paul Maurice, the Jets have already done some surprising things in a relatively short period of time. They earned road wins over both the league-leading Anaheim Ducks and defending Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks have won six-of-eight games with Maurice behind the bench. And neither Jokinen nor Maurice viewed Tuesdays loss as a step backwards from the kind of defensive zone game hes trying to teach. This defensive zone concept, its not like you write it on the board you get it and you go and theres your defence for the rest of your life, its a work in progress, Maurice said. There wasnt a letdown (Tuesday night). They werent running out of position, getting away from what they were trying to do to brreak a game open.ddddddddddddaurice said players are starting to see things and there are fewer questions coming back. Hes pleased with the compete level of one of the NHLs youngest teams. The biggest thing hes instilled in us is play for each other in every game, said centre Mark Scheifele. That approach seems to be working for the 20-year-old Scheifele, who had a goal and an assist against Nashville and is third in scoring among NHL rookies.Four Jets are heading to the Olympics: goalie Ondrej Pavelec and Michael Frolik for their native Czech Republic, Jokinen for Finland and Blake Wheeler, currently tied for Winnipegs scoring lead, for the U.S.The others will have a long layoff and while Maurice says hes had experience with Olympic breaks, with a young team like the Jets it might be different. The last time I went through an Olympic break that I remember, we ended up going to the final (2001-02 with Carolina) and came out fast and quick, Maurice said. We had a bunch of guys . . . that were older, fit men who used that break to rest but came back roaring.Maurice said veterans like former Carolina Hurricanes captain Rod BrindAmour and Martin Gelinas had the experience to know how to use the break. The concern is there will be a bunch of these guys that havent gone through an Olympic break, he said. Theres not much we can do in terms of structuring anything that is mandatory for our players.Maurice isnt worrying about the four Jets heading to Sochi, Russia.Theyre going to go and play at a really, really high level and theyre going to get better from it, he said. Id prefer to have more guys going than not.Meanwhile, Maurice said left-winger Evander Kanes hand was cleaned up by doctors after he was sidelined again by an infection that caused it to swell up.Everything finished the way we hoped, he said.Kane cut his hand in a fight with Tampa Bays Eric Brewer on Jan. 7 and initially missed four games. He returned Jan. 21 to register a goal and three assists in the next four games but isnt expected back until after the Olympic break.
