(Sports Network) - It took a little bit of extra time, but the Minnesota Wild were finally able to stop their longest losing streak of the season last time out. If only they had hosted the Edmonton Oilers a little sooner. Seeking to win consecutive games for the first time in nearly two months, the Wild will try to stretch their home winning streak over the Oilers to 16 straight games this evening at Xcel Energy Center. Minnesota halted an eight-game losing streak on Tuesday with a 3-2 shootout victory over St. Louis, bringing to an end a skid that dropped the club to 12th overall in the Western Conference. Though the Wild did pick up a spot in the standings with the win, they now have nearly no shot of making the playoffs as they trail the eighth-place Blackhawks by 10 points with just six games remaining. Pierre-Marc Bouchard scored in regulation and in the shootout, while Mikko Koivu also tallied in the tiebreaker for the Wild, who were outscored 37-12 over their 0-7-1 slide. Jose Theodore made 27 saves and stopped two of three in the shootout. Obviously goals are what counts in this game, said Koivu. Obviously you want to score as many as you can and sooner or later theyll go in. After matching a club record with its 19th road victory of the season, Minnesota will try to snap a four-game slide at home and stands a good chance of doing so seeing that it hasnt lost when hosting Edmonton since Jan. 16, 2007. The Wild have outscored the Oilers, 54-19, over their 15-game home winning streak and have taken four straight and nine of the past 12 meetings overall. The Wild will go back to Niklas Backstrom in net as they try to win two games in a row for the first time since a three-game run from Feb. 9-12. Backstrom is 17-2-1 with a 1.73 goals-against average in his career against the Oilers, including a perfect 13-0 at home with a 1.15 GAA and four shutouts. Not only will the Oilers be looking for a rare victory at Xcel Energy Center, but they will be shooting for their first victory in 11 games overall tonight. They fell to 0-7-3 in their last 10 on Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to a Kings club that was without its two leading scorers. Nikolai Khabibulin made 31 stops for the Oilers, who are on their longest kid since an 0-11-2 slide from Dec. 31-Jan. 30 of last season. Its frustrating losing, said Edmonton right wing Jordan Eberle. You can say whatever you want about the effort but were not winning hockey games, so its definitely not good in here. Nobody likes losing. Edmonton, which is last in the NHL with 57 points and seven back of 14th-place Colorado in the West, has been shut out in four of its last 17 games and has dropped six in a row on the road overall. Minnesota forward Chuck Kobasew sat out his teams recent victory with a leg injury, but is likely to return to action tonight.
