Golden State King of the West Sprints gives congrats to Jason Meyers for becoming first California World of Outlaw champion

By Gary Thomas

Rio Vista, CA – November 9, 2010…The Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series would like to congratulate Clovis, California’s Jason Meyers and the Elite Racing team for winning the 2010 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series title.

After finishing runner up in the series standings on three prior occasions, Meyers used a sweep of both main events this past Saturday at the World Finals in Charlotte to help wrap up the title and become the first California driver to ever win the World of Outlaws title.

"It feels great!" Meyers said in a team press release. "Words cannot describe tonight. This team is unbelievable. We were up against a lot this weekend, but it all paid off today. This Allstar Performance, DDNI, Media Tile, GLR Investments, Elite Landscaping car was amazing. Thank you to everyone who has been behind us. Charlie Garrett who builds our engines is here tonight and our chassis builder Steve Kent is also here.”

“There are a lot of people behind this team who helped make this all happen. It has been a long time coming. Glen (Beaton) and Brian (Bloomfield), I love them guys. They do a heck of a job. Sam (Matthews) has also been doing a great job with us. I have an incredible team. My wife Robyn and my daughters are here tonight, along with my whole family. This is absolutely incredible."

Meyers this season also became the first California driver since Darrell Hanestad in 1989 to win the prestigious Gold Cup Race of Champions at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway. In addition to that the World of Outlaw title was also the first series championship for KPC Chassis, which is owned by former two-time Golden State 410 Series champion Steve Kent of Fresno.

The Clovis wheel-man began his sprint car career in 1996, with his breakout year coming in 1999, when he claimed the Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway early in the season and finished the campaign with a second place result in the Golden State 410 Sprint Car standings. That ’99 season also saw Meyers win a number of other main events throughout the year, including his first taste of victory at the famed Calistoga Speedway half-mile.

The driver known as “Hotfoot” sits in a tie with Kevin Pylant for seventh on the all-time Golden State 410 Sprint Car Series win list, having captured 12 victories in his career with the traveling circuit. Meyers also placed ninth on the Winged 410 Sprint Car Driver of the Decade list for this past decade in Northern California. Despite only running one full-time season in California he racked up 15 wins in the state from 2000-’09 and finished third in the Golden State 410 points in ’02.

“It’s definitely a huge accomplishment for Jason Meyers to win the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series title,” said Golden State King of the West Sprints operations manager George Hague. “We certainly want to give a big congratulations to Jason and his family, Chris Luck, Guy Stockbridge and the whole Elite Racing team on a job well done. It’s a real cool deal for Jason to bring home the Gold Cup to California and win the World of Outlaw championship in the same season.”

Fellow California native Paul McMahan also enjoyed a fine year on the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series trail in 2010 driving for Kasey Kahne Racing. The former Northern Auto Racing Club Speedweek champion picked up one victory with the series en route to a career best sixth place finish in the final point standings. McMahan was also tied with Meyers for the most fast-time efforts in 2010 with the series.

It was also recently announced that McMahan would return to the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series next season behind the wheel of the Roth Motorsports No. 83, in an alliance with Kasey Kahne Racing, which will allow him to utilize the same crew he had this year.

"I can't thank Kasey Kahne enough for everything that he has done for me this past year," said McMahan in a WOO press release. "I would be retired right now if it weren't for Kasey. He gave me another shot to do what I love to do. It will be cool to race with Dennis and Teresa Roth again. They were the first team owners that I had in the World of Outlaws Series."
