CALIFORNIA LIGHJTNING SPRINT CARS OPEN 2014 SEASON AT CALIFORNIA MID-WINTER FAIR THIS SATURDAY!

(Placentia, CA, March 5, 2014)  The California Lightning Sprint Car Series will open its 21st season this Saturday night, March 8th, during the California Mid-Winter Fair at the Imperial Fairgrounds Raceway in El Centro, California. Racing will commence at 5:00 PM.

Saturday’s event will be the first of two at the Imperial County facility in 2014. The other race on the quarter mile track will be the CLS season finale on November 15th.  Sandwiched in between will be nine races at the series home track, Perris Auto Speedway, four at the Bakersfield Speedway, two at the picturesque beach side Ventura Raceway and a single appearance at Santa Maria Speedway.

2013 champion Stephen Limon of Corona will open defense of his crown Saturday in the shadow of the Ferris wheel and other carnival rides at the annual fair.  Limon, a United States Army veteran, became the series 17th different champion in the clubs 20-year history.  In 2014 he will attempt to be the first repeat champion since Greg Bragg took three crowns in a row from 2000-2002.  On his way to the title in 2013, Limon won two main events.  One at Ventura and one at the Orange Show in San Bernardino.

Limon will face a stiff test in trying to defend his crown as all of the drivers who finished second through ninth in the standings - Dan Hillberg of Placentia, San Diego’s Damon Arnett, “World Famous” Tom Downing of Lakewood, 2012 champion Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita, The “Flyin’ Jew” Zach Zauss of Murrieta, Jeff Dyer of Silver Lake, Guy Maresch of Anaheim Hills and Anaheim’s Dale Gamer - all have their eyes set firmly on stealing the crown.

Other drivers to post wins besides Limon in 2013 were Michnowicz with six, Northern California’s Doug Nunes with three, Kevin Michnowicz had two while Hillberg, Dyer, Jonathan Henry and 2010 CLS champion Jarrett Kramer each had one.

Racing on the Imperial County Fairgrounds dates back to 1930 and a host of famous drivers including Wilbur Shaw, Parnelli Jones, Johnny Rutherford Bobby Unser and Al Unser Sr. & Jr. have all raced there. For years the original CRA Sprint Car Series spent two weekends during the fair racing on both Saturday and Sunday.  Hopefully this weekend’s CLS race at the Mid-Winter Fair is the beginning of a new tradition.

The stars and cars of the CLS with have little time to rest on their laurels after Saturday’s race as they will be back in action on March 15th at the Annual Sokola Shootout at Perris Auto Speedway.

The California Lightning Sprint Car Series would like to thank series sponsors Performance by Rosson Racing, T Shirts by Timeless, Cold Fire West, Circle Track Performance, Extreme Mufflers, Racing Optics, Saldana Race Products, Keizer Wheels, Sander Engineering, Christian Stover Foundation, Hoosier Racing Tires. Drake Incorporated and DK Machine.  If you or your company would like to become part of the California Lightning Series for the 2014 season, please call Bobby Michnowicz at: (310) 320-5569.
