From this angle it is hard to tell but it looks like a Ford set of headers (gap between the 2 middle exhaust ports)

Eddie Wirth never drove for Sal Acosta,the #77 that Wirth drove was owned by himself,his girlfriend Peri Kittel and Steve Davis. Eddie did race motorcycles in which Sal was the mechanic.About the time this picture was taken Sal was working on Ed Ulayte's car. I'm about a 100% sure thats Walt in Pepper Fite's car,judging by how much the driver is leaning foward and how much his head is cocked sideways.

By the way wallscaper, I'm NOT an old geezer.{lol}

I really don't know who was driving. At the time I was expecting the frame welds to explode at any second. Everyone says either Walt Kennedy or Eddie Wirth. Those were the two who come to mind that could put that kind of pressure on a sprint car and live to tell about it. Here's a closer one.

Thanks CRA91. I does look like Walt on one of his relaxed qualifying runs. It isn't always about how many races or championships someone has won that makes them a great sprint car pilot. Huh.

Wirth in the Pepper Fite car is my answer, and boy do I miss that track. Of all the tracks I have ever driven, Ascot was one of the hardest to tame. Great Shot!

I know it's not Wirth,Eddie always had very nicely painted helmets with his name across the front of it.Walt always wore his shoulder harness pretty loose so he could lean foward and duck down behind the dash.

Dennis, I don't recall Eddie ever driving for Pepper, the only guys I remember driving for him were Stan Atherton,Walt Kennedy,Richard Griffin and when Pepper was teamed up with Mardi Madden it was Duane Feduska and Billy Boat.But that was awhile back,so I might be forgetting somebody.

Wallscaper, Walt might not of won a championship for himself, but he did help the car me and my father use to maintain,the Frank Lewis owned DSD #91 win the car owner championship in 1987 after driving the last couple months of the season for us. Ascot was definitely the true meaning of "BACKIN IT IN"

I'm guessing Walt. Man that pic sure brings back some memories. Classic "backin it in" on a cool evening at Ascot.

Hey CRA91. Was that some pilot from Arizona you had driving the 91 car? I think he won a few features.

My bad CRA 91, I meant to say Walt Kennedy, not Wirth. I know for a fact its not Eddie Wirth because of the helmet, and the way Eddie sat in a car. That has to be Walt in the Fite car.

Ok, As stated in an ealier post Eddie Worth never drove for Pepper Fite. My guess is either Greg Whooley during peabody Classic in 1987 or 88 or Billy Boat at the last race,.... setting the one lap track record as the last car to ever Qualify at Ascot. BUT! Billy ussually had yellow helmets w graphics and his name.

The 91 car could be one of three drivers,... Jeff Haywood, Mike Sweeny, or Lealand McSpadden

Billy Boat set the track record in the Bruce Bromme owned sprinter. I think that is what the video shows will have to watch it again to find out.

It's definitely not Boat at the last race when he set the record, he was running for Bromme at that time...
