Tuesdays with TMAC – Success at Volusia!

(Bill W) February 13 – Another successful Florida campaign has come to a close for Terry McCarl. Six races in six nights will tire anyone, but TMAC was charging all the way to the last checkered flag of the week!

Scoring four top fives in six races at Volusia Speedway Park was an accomplishment in itself, but considering the competition assembled, it was even more satisfying for TMAC. The week started with three shows sanctioned by the All Star Circuit of Champions. In the six night run, the average car count hovered around 56. "The All Star races (TMAC finished 4th, 3rd and 5th) weren't even really like All Star races. They were like World of Outlaws races. Pretty much everybody was there, and we had a great run. Four top fives in six nights is pretty darn good!"

When the World of Outlaws shows began on Friday night, things started a little slow, but picked up over the weekend for TMAC Motorsports. Before heading back home to Altoona, Iowa and an oncoming snowstorm, Terry related, "The first couple of (WoO) shows we started back a ways, and it laid rubber, but overall we did really well. We ran into one of the toughest fields of cars we'll run into the whole year, and we were able to not only make the show every night, we were able to start the year off strong, and we'll do our best to keep it up."

Indeed, the team managed to make all six feature events over the week without having to run one B main. Terry says, "There were a lot of good guys missing the show and using provisionals." As some of the other drivers faded late in the week, the WoO finishes for McCarl kept getting better. He went from a 14th place finish on Friday night, to a 9th place showing on Saturday, to a 4th place run in the Sunday finale and by the time it was over, sat a strong 7th in the WoO standings.

A new WoO format was implemented, inverting sixteen in the heats (4 per heat), and taking the top two finishers in the heats to the ten car dash. The two quickest qualifiers making it through their heats, but not finishing in the top two tagged the tail of the dash. The fact that the format should be more exciting for race fans is not lost on TMAC. "You're racing hard, and it gives you hope if you're starting eighth or tenth in a heat race. It makes you race hard in the heat race, and the fans want us to race as hard as we can. It's the same for everybody. If the races are better for the fans, that's what we want!"

The future bodes well for the #24 machine as the weeks ahead will be spent in preparation for a trip where TMAC has had success, Tulare, California and its Thunderbowl Raceway. The WoO will spend two nights in Tulare, February 23 and 24.

As for Terry, he'll be spending some family time this week, with sons Austin and Carson, and taking in some basketball games before getting back to preparations for California.
