BEZIO GETS WINGLESS WIN FOR SEXTON/GATLIN RACING AT BORONA!
(Lakeside, CA, July 6, 2019) San Diego’s David Bezio notched the first 2019 win for Sexton/Gatlin Racing when he outdistanced Brent Sexton and the remainder of the field in the Wingless Lightning Sprint Car main event last Saturday night at the Barona Speedway.
Saturday’s race saw two members of Sexton/Gatlin Racing – rising teenage stars Grant and Dalton Sexton – race without wings on their Lightning Sprint Cars for the first time. The teenage duo performed well on their maiden voyage without the big spoilers on top when they qualified third and fourth on the night. Younger sibling Grant took the third spot with a lap of 15.213. Dalton was a tick slower in fourth when he turned the clocks off with a time of 15.188. Father Brent was fifth quick at 15.228. Bezio, making his second appearance for the team this year, was second quick on the night when he timed in at 15.001.
In his first ever wingless heat race, Grant led all the way to take the victory with father Brent two spots back in third. Bezio took the runner-up spot and Dalton finished fourth in the other eight-lap heat.
For the main, Brent was outside of row two. The third row featured Dalton on the inside with his younger brother alongside. Bezio was on the inside of the fourth row. Brent and Bezio began marching towards the front of the pack as soon as the race started and by the end of the second circuit, they were second and third respectively. Brent advanced his position going into turn three on the third lap when he raced to the inside and stole the lead. Once out front, he pushed the blue #44 to a commanding advantage.
Seeing what Brent did a couple of laps earlier, Bezio used the same move on the same spot on the track to take the runner-up position on lap five. By that time, Brent had built a comfortable lead that he maintained until lap nine when Bezio started to reel him in. At the end of the ninth go around, Bezio was directly on Brent’s tail. One lap later coming out of turn four, he shot to the inside and relieved his car owner of the top spot.
Once he commandeered the point position, Bezio started to pull away from the field. And, he continued to do so all the way to the checkered flag. At the end, he was a full straightaway ahead of second place Brent. Dalton finished sixth in the main and Grant placed eighth.
Sexton/Gatlin Racing gets this weekend off before another wingless race next Saturday night, July 13th, at Barona. The week after, the team takes to the road for three straight nights of racing at the annual Clay Cup at Washington’s Deming Speedway.
