Is Karl Kinser still a crew chief?

No, he must be close to 80 yrs old.  He works on his stuff like old cars in his garage.  Just a side note, alot of people think Karl had alot of money behind him.  Truth is he pinched pennies to race.  Nothing was real fancy on his team.  At times it was just Karl and Steve on the road.  Steve as we know was a great driver but not much of a mechanic.  One of the last years Karl raced he said he only had a net profit of $2000.00 dollars.  Karl and Mark could have racked up alot more wins but Karl felt it was time to quit.

Karl had gotten severely ill during the Nationals with appendix I believe in 1984 and had a slow recovery. I believe the very next year Mark got hurt in a sprint car crash and never fully recovered from head injury. Those two things led to the end of both careers, although I do remember Karl being willing to go back out on tour providing Mark was capable of doing so. But that never did materialize.

Did you mean 1994? Although that's probably too early, more like 1998 is when they were about done.

Thanks for the wake up call ;) had my head in my --- when I posted that one. Not sure what I was thinking.....probably Karl and Steve parting (around '95?). Karl got sick at the Nationals in 2002.......Mark got hurt a year or two after that......at a race in ND. I don't think Karl was on the road much after he had gotten sick. I remember he endured a rather lengthy recovery.

To have 3 Knoxville Nationals winner in that picture at Bloomington plus probably one of the best ever crew cheifs says a lot for the talent the Kinser family had. I think I read  that Bob  the patriarch of Steves family just passed. Karl was old school  work hard, have fun,get it done that made WOO what it is and there will never be a crew cheif that was as popular as most drivers.

Mark Kinser had a long term head injury. To this day I believe he has issue's. Karl Kinser had Writgen as a sponsor. Karl had enough manufacturer sponsorship from Maxim on down. 2000.00 net profit
