KRAMER WINS PERRIS CLS MAIN EVENT – BARONA THIS SATURDAY!
(Torrance, CA, August 22) USAC/California Lightning Sprint Car Series point leader Jarrett Kramer won his second main event of 2018 last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway and increased his lead to more than 200-points in the championship standings for the first time this season. This Saturday night, August 25th, the series will be racing in Kramer’s San Diego County backyard at the Barona Speedway.
Seventeen cars signed into the pits at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval for Saturday’s race. Two-time series champion Brent Sexton of Lakeside out qualified the field with a lap of 18.064. Five-time series champion Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita was second quick in Dan Hillberg’s red #10 with a time of 18.194. Third fast was 2010 champ Kramer when he toured the track in 18.240.
A pair of six-lap heat races preceded the main event. Sexton hammered the field and beat Kramer and Palmdale’s Eric Greco to win by over a half straightaway in the first one. CHP officer Jeff “Ponch” Dyer won the second heat in convincing fashion when he outdistanced Michnowicz and Lakewood’s Aiden Lange.
For the 20-lap main event, Dyer started on the pole with Greco alongside. Row two was comprised of Lakeside rookie Dalton Sexton and Camarillo’s Cody Nigh. Lange and Kramer sat in row three with Michnowicz and Brent Sexton in the fourth row.
Dyer, 35, was the first into turn one and was chased by Greco and Nigh. The race got as far as turn three on the first lap where Michnowicz, who was driving for Hillberg due to his own engines being tired and Hillberg nursing a sore knee, had his steering arm break. He slid sideways and was tagged by Chino’s Pat Kelley. “Rockstar” Jon Robertson had no way to get through and slid into the fray and tipped over. Nobody was injured, but Michnowicz was out with the broken steering arm and Kelley was ruled by out by officials for going to the pits rather than the work area to make repairs. Robertson was able to restart.
For the restart, it was again Dyer leading Greco into the first turn with Dalton Sexton third. The restart got as far as turn two on the second circuit where there was contact between Brent Sexton and Lange. Lange flipped and tumbled into the billboards with the elder Sexton sliding into him bringing out the red flag. Lange had his bell rung, but was otherwise okay. However, the cars were locked together and that caused a delay in getting them pulled apart.
Dyer continued in the lead when the green waved, but the race continued to be plagued by yellow flags and attrition. By the end of the fourth lap, nine of the 17 starters were out of the race. The race was also running well past the allotted time and track officials cut it back to 15 laps.
Dyer maintained the top spot until the 10th lap. Kramer’s Malicious Liquids/Anarchist Mfg/Reber Reinforcing/Finest City Dog Training/Victory Graphix/BK Wings/Kramer Brothers Racing/DLX/Triple X/ Guhl 2016 Kawasaki ZX10 was working anywhere he put it on the track and he slipped inside Dyer for the lead in turn three on the 10th circuit. Once out front, Kramer immediately began to pull away.
Dyer’s lofty position at the head of the pack over the first half of the race quickly went by the wayside less than a lap later. His engine laid down and then went up in smoke. His hopes of a win were replaced by a frustrating ninth place finish.
The final five laps went yellow free and they belonged to Kramer who won by more than half a straight. It was the second win of the year for Kramer and both came in the CLS only two appearances at Perris. Greco notched his best ever CLS finish when he edged Nigh for second. Fourteen-year-old Grant Sexton, like Greco, had his best CLS finish when he crossed the line fourth with his father breathing down his neck in fifth.
For the second race in a row, the top five in the standings re-shuffled. One thing that did not change is Kramer sitting on top of the heap and he now has a 212-point lead. Brent Sexton jumped from fourth up to second. The always consistent Nigh remained third and only trails Sexton by four-points. Lange, who came in to the night in second, dropped back to fourth, but is only nine-points behind Nigh. Dominic Del Monte of Gardena, who dropped out of the main with mechanical ills after four laps, remains in fifth.
This Saturday the CLS returns to the site of what has been arguably the best race of the year thus far, the Barona Speedway. The first race will be at 5:00 P.M. In addition to the CLS, the IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pony Stocks, Factory Stocks, Dwarfs, Mini Dwarfs and Junior Sprints will also be in action. After Saturday’s race, the CLS stars will have little time to rest as they will head to the Barona Speedway for the second time this year on August 25th.
