BRENT SEXTON FINISHES SECOND AT THE VENTURA COUNTY FAIR!

(Lakeside, CA, August 9, 2018) Two-time series champion Brent Sexton finished second when the USAC/California Lightning Sprint Car Series kicked off the annual Ventura County Fair at the Ventura Raceway.  The finish was the Tennessee native’s best outing since he placed second on the same track on May 5th.

Seventeen cars showed up for the race on the tight dirt oval.  In qualifications, Brent, who came into the night fifth in points, qualified ninth with a time of 12.969.  His youngest son Grant, who was 10th in points at the start of the night, timed in just a tick slower in 11th with a lap of 13.088.

The Sexton/Gatlin racers were in separate heat races.  Each started on the outside of the front row and each recorded a third-place finish.

Brent had the “cherry spot” for the main event as he was coming from the pole.  Grant started three rows behind his dad in seventh.  With a packed house looking on at the ocean side racetrack, Brent jumped into the lead as soon as the green flag was waved.  However, his efforts were hampered early on by several yellow flags, but the result was the same every time.  Once the green flag would come back out, Brent would build a sizable lead.

A few spots behind Brent, Grant was holding his own against all the veteran drivers.  The series leading rookie stayed in the top 10 all through the early going.

On the ninth lap, Brent was passed for the lead, but he was still locked solidly in second.  Disaster struck for Grant one lap later.  In turn one on the tenth circuit, two cars got together and came to a stop on the track.  Grant slid his #44G sideways to avoid, but still caught a small piece of one of the other cars.  Unfortunately, the minor contact caused enough damage to knock Grant out of the race and he was saddled with a frustrating 14th place finish.

When action resumed, Brent pulled away from the third-place driver and he continued to do so all the way to the checkered flag.  When the race ended, he finished second and he was a half straight in front of the third-place car.

Brent’s impressive second place outing propelled him into fourth place in the championship standings.  Going into the next series race at Perris Auto Speedway on August 18th, he is only three-points out of third and 33-points out of second.  Grant strengthened his 10th place spot in the points standings and is only 50-points out of ninth heading to Perris.

Before the race at Perris on the 18th, Sexton/Gatlin Racing will head north this Saturday, August 11th, to contest the “5th Annual Wayne Albright Memorial” at the Merced Raceway.  Fans interested in attending can find the track at 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Merced (95341).  The track phone number is (209) 383-7799.
