Thomas Kennedy won the UMSS race at Cedar Lake last night. He gave his trophy to my 5-year-old son and invited him to be in the victory lane photo.

This meant the world to my son (and to me.) It was like meeting a super hero. He couldn’t stop talking about it on the way home. Little things like this have a huge impact on kids. My son will never forget the blue 21K sprint car. The first thing he asked this morning when he woke up is where is his trophy.

Congratulations to Thomas on his win but also being a great ambassador to the sport. Hopefully, he will be at my dad’s memorial race in July at CLS so I can thank him personally.

A couple years ago Thomas spun out of the lead at Husets and ended up pulling out of the feature later. In the pits after the races he was all smiles and signing autographs for kids. An attitude like that is the sign of a champion.

I was at Princeton but missed Cedar Lake on account of that cold wind that kicked up yesterday afternoon so sorry that I missed you last night Chad. I don't get out to many races anymore so I try to catch up with as many people as I can.

A ride around the Twin City Speedway (later known as North Starr) for me and my sister in this car that our cousin and uncle worked on was my first experience as a kid.  The driver was Jerry Richert Sr., year 1961.  No many people can make the claim that they took a ride in a race car with a four time IMCA champion Hall of Fame member after the races.  I'm still hooked on racing and I'll be 67 in a couple of months so I can attest to what a little bit of attention from the drivers can do.

Sounds lke a 3rd generation of Pattersons just got hooked last night.  ;)

Make sure to say hi to me Stan at my dad's race. I will be in the pits that night. My son is old enough where I making a focused effort to bring him to CLS to see sprint cars. I want him to have those memories like I did. I also want to support CLS for supporting sprint cars.

That is an awesome memory you have! This addicition starts somewhere.

What a awesome experience for your son, we need more things like this to happen in racing to get the young one's interested in going to the races. Little things like candy toss during intermission,  driver's donating small shirts for prizes, even giving the driver 2 trophies (1 smaller 1 to give to a child at the fence) for winning, etc., etc. go a long way in keeping children into wanting to come back next week.

Thanks for sharing this experience with the rest of us.

Darren

Great story!  Thomas gets it.  Great driver, better person.

Thanx,

Great story Chad and we often talk about the access to drivers is what seperates Sprint Car Racing from other forms of competitve sports and how that cultivates passionate, dedicated fans.  This is another example of how that interaction can and does have an impact on future fans.

The driver we sponsor routinely does the same and I have even received an email from a father telling me (the main sponsor) what an impact our driver's act made on him and his son.  How cool is that?
