Van Dyke Motorsports Set for Stockton Double Header Following Runner Up Effort at Silver Cup

By Gary Thomas

Stockton, CA – March 13, 2018…The FVP Platinum Battery Western Spring Shootout is always one of the anticipated stops on the World of Outlaws West Coast swing and Van Dyke Motorsports is geared up to invade the event for two nights of racing this weekend at the Stockton Dirt Track.

Last Friday saw driver Michael “Buddy” Kofoid make his World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series debut aboard the Gary Silva Ranches/ Lucas Oil Products No. 5h at Tulare’s Thunderbowl Raceway. After qualifying 18th in flight-A of time trials he moved forward to finish 7th in his heat race, before ending his night in the Last Chance Showdown.

With Saturday’s event in Tulare falling victim to rain, Van Dyke Motorsports dropped the 360 powerplant into the car and made the five-hour haul to Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico for the annual Silver Cup. Kofoid opened the evening by qualifying 11th and then picked up a win in his heat race, making him eligible for the A-main redraw.

Starting from the outside of the front row he charged to the lead and held command over the early stages. The 16-year-old soon had to deal with traffic and the relentless challenges from Colby Copeland, who took over the top spot as they raced through slower cars. Kofoid stayed right with him however and got alongside multiple times, as the duo put on a thrilling show for the fans.

In the closing circuits the Penngrove, CA racer gave it a few more looks and when the white flag waved he made a bid for the lead. As they raced off turn two though, just enough contact occurred to the back of Copeland’s machine, which upset the car and allowed Andy Forsberg the opportunity to squeak by. The wild final lap then saw Copeland bicycle over the edge and into the wall off the final corner. “Buddy” motored by and crossed the stripe in second to record his first podium finish of the season.

“It was a lot of fun dicing it up through lapped traffic with Colby Copeland all race long in Chico,” Kofoid commented. “The track was in perfect shape on Saturday and we were close to picking up a win. I would have liked to be one spot further up, but we’ll take a second. That was about the most fun I’ve had in my sprint car career up to this point. I want to thank Harley Van Dyke, Gary Silva Ranches and everyone involved that makes this all possible. We’re really looking forward to Stockton this weekend and hope the weather cooperates.”

Weather permitting Kofoid and Van Dyke Motorsports will venture to the Stockton Dirt Track this Friday and Saturday for the annual FVP Platinum Battery Western Spring Shootout. The two-night World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event routinely plays host to a packed house of spectators at the centrally located facility. Van Dyke Motorsports and Michael Kofoid would like to thank Gary Silva Ranches, Lucas Oil Products, NAAKE Suspension and JRI West, T&T Trucking, Rafter V Farms, Sonoma Paint Center, North County Plastering and Kevin Sharrah Designs for their support this season.
