Swift plant raided in Marshalltown

Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided the Swift & Co. hog processing plant in Marshalltown Tuesday morning.

Early reports indicated an estimated 250 agents were on the scene executing search warrants and detaining workers without proper identification. Four Homeland Security buses were also called to the scene to transport detainees.

In addition semi trailers filled with hogs are not being accepted at the plant, according to officials at the scene, causing traffic backups in the area.

There were no reports on how many workers were being detained at the plant.

The Times-Republican is currently developing an "EXTRA" edition for newstand and carrier-route delivery later this morning.

Wonder if this means Ottumwa's Excel plant was raided too? Lived there for like the last 5 years. Heard the Ottumwa plant tries to stay legal with Mexican work Visa's but who knows.

Officials are finally doing something? It would appear that this illegal activity has been going on for some time. Swift should swiftly be charged with all criminal charges possible. I wonder how much of this lawbreaking practice happens in Union Shops? NEAR ZERO! Send them hogs on to Oklahoma, they go well with Arkansas chickens.

I'm sure there will be jail time for the HR department that failed to proerly document the workers in question, which is where the onus really should be.

Or not.

More likely, not.

so, you think it is only the HR departments fault? You must be republican. I would say HR AND Swift and company as a whole knew if they had illegals working. not just HR

No word out of the Ottumwa plant yet, but I am sure things will be crazy for a few days around there.

This raid was designed to round up illegal immigrants who have obtained jobs by stealing the identities and Social Security numbers of U.S. citizens.

Jut on the news, this 6 state raid is in conjuction with an ongoing ID theft investigation which started in Feb, this year.

Get rid of the illegals Roger, get the Union plants, get some $12 a pound bacon. lol

Wal-Mart is set to build a store 800 miles long on the border.

Customers go in the front door, illegals go in the back to work.

Win Win for both countries!

I'll make you a bet that no fine is levied, and nobody does jail time for committing a Federal Crime.

It's been happening since immigration was 'Reformed' the first time in the '80's and the I9 came into existence.

Wanna hazard a guess as to how many fines have been handed to companies out for improperly or fraudulently documented workers in the ensuing 20 years?

I completely agree that companies like Swift and (more famously) WalMart circumvent the existing laws all the time.

I also completely agree that it's been the powers that be in Washington who have all but ignored the issue on BOTH sides of the aisle.

I really don't have a lot of problems with the Mexicans here, the good ones come into my place and spend money, some bring me great Mexican food, and the bad one are so damn stupid they wind up in jail, so all I see are the good ones!

Does $12 a pound bacon taste better than $2? You bet it does if you bought it.

True story....In 1992 I was on a project in the farm rich Imperial Valley of Southern California when the State Legislature, and yes it was controlled by Democrats, voted against school buses having a requirement for seat belts and use by all children. In addition the law would have required any vehicle used for the transportation of people, such as pickups and flat bed trucks have the same. Why did it not pass, possibility saving thousands of lives? Because of the agricultural lobby. It would have added too much additional cost to transport farm workers to and from fields and locations. Often I witnessed 10 or more farm workers in the back of pickups or flatbeds travelling well over the speed limit in route to another field.....Just another example of big corporations influence on lawmakers.

I guess one thing the Hispanics do is, go to work, pay their taxes, don't file for a refund on over paid taxes, and act "normal" I guess maybe some large tires ought to take a lesson? lol

They used ID theft eh? You would have to assume the company helped them take those ID's too. I mean, not too many Mexicans come to work for you with names like: Todd Smith or Dan Johnson. and certainly not around 300 of them.

"So, Mister Johnson, let me show you your work station."

Oh, and the main reasoning I get out of many states never having seat belts on buses is for one big reason. You have 40 kids and 1 adult. Bus catches on fire or something and the 1 adult can't get all the kids out then he is held responsable for not being able to unbuckle 40 kids. One of a few reasons I know of I knew we never had them.
