I think the topic originated from a concern for the image of the sport more than the protection of children's ears. My kids hear obceneties from many sources so it isnt that which I am concerned with. It is the fact they now associate the ghetto talk with the sport I most enjoy., at least more than they did a week ago.

Image, image image.

That was my whole point from the beginning.  I'm not "but hurt" or a "snowflake" who wants to stir up trouble or some kind of American version of the Taliban who wants the moral police to come break somebody's door down for swearing.  I'm just questioning if that is the direction the sport is going in.  More of a pro wrestling, rock concert vibe than the sometimes bordering on puritanical image of years gone by.  If the shackles have been loosened I am capable of adapting to the changes and melting some ears.  wink

Obviously for the guys that were not there, didn't see the action on the track!! It was a hard fought battle. Logan ran a amazing race to begin with, after the red Brads car was awesome! Logans car was as good as before, but Brads car was as good... You would of used those "choice" words too if you just won $175k...

Brad Sweet's victory celebration was very disappointing. I am sure that WOO, World Racing Group, NAPA Auto Parts and KKR  are very upset with Sweet and his ghetto mouthed celebration. Sweet's greatest victory and largest payday was tainted and will forever be a thorn in his career at this level of sprint car racing. He obviously isn't mature enough to grasp the totalaty of his accomplishment. He stated earlier this week that Schatz has competition now ! Really Brad, how many total victories and WOO Championshipos do you have under your belt ? I am sure that Schatz doesn't feel threatened by you or your mouth ! Schatz is a class act, like most of the guys out there. In closing, I sincerely hope that the phones will be ringing at WOO, World Racing Group, NAPA Auto Parts and KKR concerning Sweet's verbage in his post victory interview. But then again, we'll see if the money rules over the whole deal.

geezz what is wrong with you? You sound like a complete wine bag wuss. So Sweet said "shit" and some other things, whoopty doo. The dude was pumped up with emotion cause he won. I wouldve said alot worse than he did if I would've won. You said his actions will, be a thorn in his career?? LOL! You really think his actions after his win is going to be a thorn in his career?? LOL! the guy says some cuss words and now his career is going to have issues. WOW!  Alos, Brad is right Donny does have competition now, there is 2 or 3 other drives than can win this Outlaw Championship this year.  What a joke of a post, why litter the forums with tis kind of rubbish.

Couldn't agree with you more. It's called manners and respect for others. A rare commodity today. I wonder if he talks that way in front of his mother?

I think it just the way things are going. Everybody wants to raise the ante on their celebration. I lament the passing of self restraint in addressing the public, to me there is a difference in private and public language, even if it might seem hypocritical.

For me it's very simple. It boils down to being in front of the camera, or beyond the camera. Once the camera is gone say what you like. But, one should always respect especially the kids and the sponsors.

Uh oh. Did I just hear Tim Shaffer say that dreaded horrible word shit? I think it was, "these guys will race the shit out of you." As Helen Lovejoy would say, "will someone please think of the children!" I surely hope this does not hurt this guy's legacy with that ghetto mouth.

And yes, I am laying the sarcasm on pretty heavy here. My son was watching it again & he does not appear to be emotionally scared or confused. Above all, congrats to Shaff on the win.

Your handle is Dollansky fan.  I couldn't imagine Craig using that kind of language in victory lane and I never heard Steve, Sammy or Doug or anyone else use it in close to 60 years of attending races.  I don't have to be there to appreciate the emotion.  I was at the Million when Jac won it and he was a grrcious winner with a much bigger payday.

Proof that these younger guys can have a successful dominating career while being gracious and appreciative in victory lane.   We older folks who grew up in the 50s and 60s probably will never be comfortable with it.

People are tossing the word hypocrite around in this thread but the word doesn't apply.  Think of hypocrite as "do a I say and not as I do".  The word means to preach one thing and do another so if I was a driver and dropped an F bomb in an interview then got after others for doing the same I'm a hypocrite.

On the other hand self control is defined as being able to control ones emotions and reactions, especially in a stressful situation.  Consequently, if someone like me who swears profusely in a setting where that language is acceptable but I control myself in a situation where I know better than to drop F bombs that is defined as having self control.

Speaking of self control Smoke set an example last night of not exercising self control when he went after a fan in the pits.  There were no big winnings involved, just a mouthy fan who I assume had a few too many beers.  The result is an unflattering video along with possible charges and legal ramifications.  His apologists can't use the excuse that he won $175k so they're going with the "Smoke is a badass and nobody f's with him" defense.

I think our sport has self control issues and needs to reel it in and get back to our family friendly roots.  Not for my sake but for the sake of all those families that might be swayed to select other forms of entertainment to spend their money on.  Hard core fans won't be scared off but these tracks can't afford to bleed off anymore fans and I don't see all this circus sideshow stuff as being  good for the image of the sport.

HA! I was wondering if anyone else caught that. I thought "uh oh someone is going to get incontinent about Shaffer saying a bad word on a hot mic"

Cheers!

To be honest you need to keep the comments separate and stay on this issue. Very few people were concerned about shit but the thread is more about the ghetto talk.

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Exactly.  I don't have any issues with hell, shit or damn but I'd prefer they don't use any of them.  My earliest memories of racing aren't as a 25 year old pounding beers in the rowdy section.  They're of being nine years old watching the pageantry, colors and chrome at early 60's IMCA races and gracious appreciative interviews by guys like Jerry Richert Sr. and Scratch Daniels.  I'm speaking up because I don't care to see the word that starts with F and ends with K and if it doesn't work you can use your fingers.  Yes, I am concerned about the use of the word fork in victory lane.  This thread needs some smiles and we need to move onto this weekend's controversies and hopefully some great racing along with them.  wink
