I agree with your statements about Old people at the races, hell I am 54.

When I was 23 I went to races all the time but today's 23 year olds aren't nearly as dedicated.

Lots of gray hair in the grandstands at ANY race track these days.

When the 70's people that were camping close to you pass away who is gonna take their place?

This IS a major problem for all short tracks.

Highspeedo, I think you're missing the point with SuperChuck.  He generally posts in this forum to have some fun and was a regular years ago when we had a lot of fun people hangin' around this place.  Him and Vande who I am sure would recognize each other if they don't already know each other agree on 99% of all things sprint car racing.  Both of them are top notch guys with the right ideas.  SC has been around this sport and even worked in it for a long time and is passionate as is Vande, they just might come at it from a different angle but trust me, they are on the same side.....

I don't think bringing up things that they could improve on is bitching. Actually vande is one of  the posters on here that makes some really good comments.

Example is Friday I am sitting at my camper at Red Rock just looking around. One thing I noticed is all the campers around me were huge RV's with older (Mid 70's) people. In fact my whole loop was older people there for the races so that is a glimpse of the fan base.

Knoxville didn't get to where its at today by sitting back and not doing improvements. Thats why it has the status it has today. Going by the Super Chuck mentality we would still be sitting in a 20 row main grandstand looking at a quanset hut on the backchute.

Super Chuck says you're missing the point cowboy.  The point was Knoxville DOES NOT sit on it's collective hands and wait to do things.  They proactively make improvements all the time.  If you pay attention, nearly every year there is something new.  Last 5 years alone...bathroom upgrade (remember the piss troughs?), new front stretch speakers, new scoreboard (thanks RJ), front stretch jumbletron, fencing improvements, victory lane facelift, front entrance facelift, update(s) on track billboards, Cappy Avenue of Champs, added racing flags along Hwy 14, monitors at concessions/beer stands to show racing action while waiting in line, new concession stands and mixed drink choices, water truck filling station inside the track....plus several others Super Chuck can't remember off the top of his thick head.  Good grief people what more do you want?!?!  Oh yeah, better bathrooms.  Gotcha.

Time for ole Super Chuck to bow out.  This thread reminds him why he stopped coming here.

Everything you mention has been positive, I agree on that wholeheartedly.

As a father to two teenagers I see areas where improvement is needed from their point of view (after all, they are the future attendees) these days.   What they consider a "need" compared to what my generation considers a "need" are vastly different.

The top 2 things on thier list for upgrades are:  Free WiFi throughout the track and nicer bathrooms.

The top 2 things on my list would be:  more handrails in the stands and another elevator or two (one of these days I'm going to need both).

It's about that new generation.  If racetracks lose another generation to other entertainment options the struggle to survive will get harder and harder.

Free WiFi?  Seriously?  If you're using up so much data that you need Wifi at the races, try putting your devices away and watch the races.  If you need anything outside of social media on a phone or tablet at the races, then you're not there to watch the races.  Or just pony up for more data.  Most places don't have WiFi.  Most phone providers have excellent service around the racetrack, even during Nationals.  You don't get that at a concert or a college football game.

Rest rooms: Your point is made, but try addressing this with a fair board member rather than complaining here in a public forum.  It will get you further in the end. Complaining here does no good for the track or the sport.

Lets say we have $30,000 to spend and we let fans decide where it goes.  Your options are rest rooms, more fencing for safety reasons, hand rails, giving your local teams a free tire a few times a year, adding more suites, raising the purse, widing seats.  I can guarantee you by far the majority of people would have rest rooms on the lower half of their needs.

It's not like the rest rooms are horrible. Compare them to any other dirt track in Iowa.

Another elevator?  If that is your top NEED then you're just spoiled.

(Nice use of parenthesis once again.)

Eric,

Yes, the current crop of teenagers, and to some extent those under 30 years old EXPECT free WiFi - they get it everywhere else they go already.  School, work, other venues including college football and basketball - the state universities in Iowa are already offering or planning to offer this service.  To think that it's not considered a need by the younger generation is just sticking your head in the sand.

Watch or go to another sporting event sometime, everyone is on their devices while at an event.  It's one of the reasons the I-Cubs put up additional netting along the baselines.  People are looking at their phones, not the baseball game going on in front of them.

The track talks up the Knoxville Raceway APP while you are watching the races and you expect them to not be on their phones???

Rest rooms:  I have brought it up to fairboard members.  Most know they need to address them more than they already have. I am not complaining on here about them, I am simply pointing out that this is something that us die-hards think are fine that the younger generation that tracks should be trying to attract care about.

Are the restrooms horrible?  No, but horrible should not be the bar that you are using.  Are the bathrooms adequate?  the men's are, but I would venture to say that for anyone other than the die-hards they are in-adequate.  To my wife and daughter, the women's are not considered adequate.

Casual fans could care less about the free tires going to teams, or adding suites, or raising the purse.  Only the die-hard fans do.  You are a die-hard fan, as am I, as is Super Chuck.   Our view is skewed by our fanaticism of the sport.

Stop comparing the track to other dirt-tracks.  They ARE NOT the competition for the entertainment $$'s and haven't been for some time.   The competion in Iowa for fans is Wells Fargo Arena, Principal Park, Iowa Speedway, Jack Trice Stadium, Kinnick Stadium and venues like 7 Flags Events Center.   That is the bar you should be measuring yourself against when it comes to all amenities.

Am I spoiled?  I have never used the elevator myself unless I've had suite tickets and even then I prefer to take the stairs.  Hopefully I have another 25+ years before I need to use one.  But the people that sit near me in the stands NEED an elevator or they won't be able to attend in 3 or 4 years and for some they have the need for it today.  That is an issue for the track that if they don't address will hurt them in the long run.  The fanbase is getting older every minute.  The single elevator that is currently in use is not enough anymore.  In the event of the grandstands needing to be evacuated due to weather, it takes over 20 minutes for the wheelchair bound folks to get into the the elevator to go down during a weekly show.   That is a SAFETY issue for your customers.  Handrails are a Safety Issue for your customers.

You listed off things above for if there was $XXX to spend:

Die-Hard fans would probably priortize this way:

giving your local teams a free tire a few times a year, raising the purse, widing seats, hand rails, rest rooms, more fencing for safety reasons, adding more suites

The fans you haven't attracted yet and that you need to replace those that are aging would probably prioritize this way:

rest rooms, widening seats, hand rails, more fencing for safety reasons, giving local teams a free tire a few times a year, more suites, raising the purse

These are two VASTLY different groups.  Those that you need to attract have much different expectations than die-hard fans do.

Had a nice young family of 5 sit near me mid-season this year.  They had won tickets somewhere and were from DesMoines.   I asked if they were coming back when the races got over and the dad (30 maybe) said:  I hope so, this is great!  The mom (30 maybe) said:  probably not, the bathrooms are terrible, no hot water, seriously?   I asked her what could be done and she replied:  Build new ones maybe?  We are used to what they have at the I-Cubs and Wells Fargo, those are nice.

Saw the dad about a month later at the races and asked him if the family came with him.  He said: No, my wife makes the family decisions and she decided I-Cubs instead on Sunday.  I came down tonight because these things are awesome.  Wish I could talk her into bringing the family again but I doubt it.

Listening to die-hard fans is great and all, but you have to have a broader view if you want to grow and expand your business.

You have a couple of vaild points.  But I'm also calling BS.  You just now "conveniently" remembered a family from DM when you could have brought that up earlier.  You're just here to argue with people.  There's another race track about 30 miles north that has all of those ammenities, except wifi, and their stands are not full. Principal Park seats about 10,000 people, their stands aren't full unless they shoot off fireworks at the end of the night.  It comes down to what people want for entertainment.  Some people golf, hunt, fish, some people like stick and ball sports, some people like racing, some people only come for beer with buddies or fireworks.  We try to attract all ages and walks of life and give them a fun atmosphere. If people have fun, they come back.  It's that simple.

Sometimes I think we get a little spoiled. Case in point: Here in Ohio, one trip to Mansfield and Eldora, or Lawrenceburg in Indiana will spoil you for life - 99% of the dirt tracks (and asphalt ones I've been to) in the country cannot compete with those facilities. However, some of the best racing, time in and time out, doesn't happen (IMO) on those tracks - it happens on the tracks that do the best with what they have, like Waynesfield.

At the same time,  I hate walking into a restroom at a track where your feet stick to the floor and the smell about knocks you over. I'd rather (and I have) piss in the bushes or in the parking lot. I still contend the restroom at the Talladega Short Track was the worst I've seen, followed closely by Susquehanna in previous years, though I understand they have redone the stands/restrooms.

Maybe you should get out of the press box more often and actually talk to people in the stands that aren't wearing race shirts or go down and see the line of elderly that are leaving before the races are over to go down teh elevator so they don't have to wait for 20 minutes or more after the races to get out of the grandstands.

Knoxville is lucky as they have a very dedicated fanbase.  A guy that sits behind me drives over from Muscatine every racenight no matter the weather forecast.  He even drives back and forth everyday for 360 and 410 Nationals.  But he is  65 years old, I don't see many young faces in the stands that are going to take his place when he can no longer attend.

I agree, Iowa Speedway isn't full, but IMO part of that blame lies with the original owners.   They didn't help themselves at all in those early years and you only get one chance to make a food first imperession.

The bottom line is that you are competing for people's $$$ against all those other forms of entertainment.   Having teh amenities to compete are part of that.

There will always be improvements. For an entertainment venue one thing you never do is settle. Always work to improve. The difficult task is deciding what to improve next when you don't win the $700m lottery. Sometimes it's the smaller things that tend to go unnoticed such as the sound system, restrooms etc that the die hards will always notice. On the other hand, the fancier toys such as the scoreboard and suites go a long way to attracting newer fans as well. It's all give and take based off of want AND need. One major positive that we all will get to experience is the new Clauson Towers. I look forward to watching that project complete as that will be one more item that further separates Knoxville from the rest. Continue to improve.

Super Chuck can say with 100% confidence that when he asks Mama Chuck if she wants to head to Lake Ozark Speedway for the 360 show next weekend, she would NEVER respond with, "But what if the bathrooms are pooey?".  She'd be like, "Hell yeah, I'm in.  Let's load up the whole Chuckin' family after football practice and point it South."

Super Chuck gets it, bathrooms are a big deal for chicks.  Heck, Mama Chuck REFUSES to use a porta-potty unless it's the absolute only option.  But some of you guys are acting like Knoxville has holes in the ground to squat over.  Are they the Taj Mahal of bathrooms?  Absolutely not, but the place is far from a dump.  Super Chuck doesn't spend a whole lot of time in the ladies shitter since "the incident" but Mama Chuck rarely comments about Knoxville's potties so they can't be that bad.

Anyone staying home just BECAUSE of the Knoxville bathrooms would also say "these cars are too noisey and I got yucky dirt in my hair".  You shouldn't cater to that crowd because you won't keep them.  There are thousands of women in the stands every week that show it's not the widespread issue it's being painted as.

Knoxville is light years away from most tracks, yet some of our vocal locals just have to find something to bitch about.  It really gets old.  Super Chuck went out East to catch some PA action and really wish more people would get off the Knoxville porch so they realize just how good they have it.

God Bless you and this post, Super Chuck.

Maybe you should stop counting the people waiting at the elevator and use the stairs so you're not taking up a spot in line.  And I think everyone is grateful that there is an elevator.  I never hear anyone complaining it takes too long to use the elevtor.  And apparently you don't see me nearly every race day talking to fans under the stands before the races, or in the pits after the races.

Must say this thread has gone to crap. It is very clear different folks have different priorities. Reverbalizing it numerous times doesnt validate your point. Of couse guys dobt understand the potty issue as they can hold their breath long enough to get relief. But put your purse on the floor and sit for a while may make your eyes open to think like a girl.

I'm thinking installing one of those "2-way Speed sidewalks" like you see in the Airports from the North Camp grounds to the track would not be to much to ask!!!!!

Well that verifies everything. If the elevator needs a bell hop to operate it the track is still in the 1920s. Forget WiFi. Pull out the elevator's operator manual. Push 1 for 1st floor. 2 for 2nd floor.

My wife and I have Verizon, on Friday and Saturday of Nationals, the entire network was operating slowly due to traffic. WIFI would have helped greatly in the pits for both Race Monitor and the Knoxville App (used for lineups).  I do however feel this would be a major undertaking as you would probably just run into the same network traffic issues with the track's wifi during nationals, unless Knoxville is willing to spend big on bandwith and equipment.

The restrooms are inadequate. Don't even try to argue. Just work towards getting them fixed.

Maybe you should have fireworks (instead of just advertising them on twitter LOL). Kids love fireworks and parents will take kids to that type of event for that reason only.

I'll know more tonight on this topic as a friend came for the first time 4 weeks ago (never been to a sprintcar race), and has only missed one night since then, he is hooked. His wife is coming tonight for the first time. We will see what type of impression everything has on her. So either the track will have 2 new fans or just 1. We shall see in the morning.

I do not agree with your approach Eric. As a representative of the track, I feel you should stay off message boards unless it is for promotional use. Getting into it with a paying customer in public is not a good look for you or the track. In fact, you have used very poor judgment in this case. Vande just wants to argue, and all you did was take the bait. It almost feels as if you have some personal issues with him.

You could just be like me and try to ignore all his posts where he constantly tries to push his opinions on everyone as if they were facts.

I'm just an observer here, but I feel like someone should say something here. The poster above mentions it, but I'll elaborate. The last thing a guy in your position should be doing is using your public name and position to come on an internet message board to argue with anonymous posters. That is a no win situation for you and for the track that you publicly represent.

You mention some folks just like to argue. That's correct. That also means that those folks won't stop arguing because they enjoy it, or they have the need to never be wrong. Trust me, they can outlast you and they don't have anything to lose by doing it. You however, do have something to lose. You'd be better off accentuating the positive and letting professional arguers debate themselves. When you've dug yourself into a hole, stop digging.
