I dont understand why some feel the format is great when guys like Gravel and sweet make the A mains and lock in for Sat but feel the format cheated guys like Schatz and Larson cause they aren't. I will assume they all paid the same entry fee and came to the track equal. It was after the racing started that the 2 groups separated themselves and I thought that was how racing worked.
To have the best make the Sat A main you need a larger sample size than 1 heat and 1 feature to determine the best. Seems like some are suggesting who they think are the best and feel cheated if they dont end up racing late Saturday.
Maybe the best all season aren't the best this weekend and those earning the spots should get the credit and enjoy the spot light.
Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Format is great. No need to change it. Been here since Wednesday and racing has been great so far here in person

I guess if you like seeing half of the A field on the prelim nights being deserving drivers and the other half being guys that got inverted to the front of their heats and were able to hang on, then the format is fine. If you want to see the best 24 in the prelim A mains then the format needs tweeking. The problem is the track is usually too locked down and hard to pass in the heats and that problem has progressively got worse with most of the cars being equal nowadays. WOO heats you earn your spot and have to finish top 2 to make the dash. That makes them at least a little bit entertaining and definitely meaningful.
I get that a lot of fans like the large heat race invert. It's unique and in theory makes the heat racing better provided the track has widened out enough for passing. So why not just take more cars out of the B and start 26 or 28 cars for the A main since so many of the top drivers aren't able to make through the heats anymore? Knoxville's a big enough track and that would be a couple more fast cars to keep an eye on coming through the field in the A.

I don’t need to see the best in the A on a prelim night. I want to see the ones who earned it by timing well and having to work HARD in the heats. Guys like Gravel, Sweet, Shaffer, TK, and such earned it. Guys like Larson and Brown did not. Track is usually wide enough but Wednesday admittingly was narrow compared to usual.

Every year we hear some Boo Birds crabbing about the format of the Knoxville Nationals. I'm a firm believer that their negative thoughts on the format are in direct correlation to the fact their driver had a shitty qualifying night.
Format is the best one of the year....leave it alone

Agreed and in some cases, their driver is one of the people bitching. It isn't perfect and it never will be. There's no such thing as a perfect format. They can go with the normal WoO format next year and at the end of the night on Saturday, the winner will still be the driver who had the best week. Doesn't matter what format is used, the best always find their way to the front. Right now, I think everyone is chasing Gravel and Sweet and given their results this year, that shouldn't surprise anyone because they are 2 of the top 3 fastest cars in the country as of late. The format didn't "beat" them. They did what they had to do and got it done. Same can be said for Reutzel. I think if he doesn't have any unforeseen issues, Donny will be in the mix as well regardless of where he starts. You can tweak the format 214 different ways and it's still going to be the fastest cars and best drivers in the country who rise to the top and those who don't make it, are those who weren't good enough. That's what makes Knoxville what it is. You can't win this race without 100% earning it.

I'll agree with your last statement but not sure on the rest.
There isn't a perfect format. Too many variables. But this is as close as it gets. And when I say that, I mean balancing competitive fairness and entertainment.
Sorry Larson sucked. Sorry Donny had a lame bullet in his heat. Sorry Shane dumped it. Sorry Brownie had bad luck all week.
The cream of the crop is still there. The guys who ran fast every time out are up front. Enjoy it. Don't dissect. Just take it in.
