New for the 2020 season, the Sprint Car Bandits series is taking yet another positive step forward. We have partnered with Steve Lang (advisor/builder), Fred Summers (sponsor), and Jimmy Allard (Allard Racing Engines, advisor/builder) to build and race a LS based 5.3L sprint car engine.

For the past 4 seasons, winged sprint cars, featuring different engine combinations, have been found to all be competitive under the Sprint Car Bandits banner due to its tire and wing angle rules.

The current ‘Bandits rules allows most engine combinations, to 360 cubic inches (+1%), to be competitive, giving our drivers several options without sacrificing performance.

This engine will feature the following components:

• LS 5.3L pickup truck engine platform (steel block, stock aluminum heads)
• Stock aluminum heads w/light cleanup to improve flow
• Stock crank and rods
• Aftermarket flat top pistons
• MSD ignition control with stock coil packs
• Mechanical throttle body injection

The goal of this project is not to duplicate existing engine combinations but rather to offer an affordable, yet very competitive alternative. This LS recipe will cost significantly less than other current engine platforms. Yet, all current engine platforms will continue to be legal in Sprint Car Bandits competition.

Plus, aftermarket parts are readily available – and at very reasonable prices.

Keeping in mind the ‘Bandits wing angle and tire rules have already created an environment where race teams of all sizes can compete for wins. With that said, we feel this LS package, when combined with our car rules, will offer affordability, driveability, and the ultimate in performance.

Again, most naturally aspirated engine combinations that feature a steel block, aluminum heads, and do not exceed 360 cubic inches, will still be legal when racing with the Bandits series, as in the past 4 years. But all non-typical engine combinations must be pre-approved…as has been the case all along. In other words for example, if you choose to configure a 6.0L LS, you will just need to make sure it still fits within the confines of the rules at the beginning of this paragraph.

Note we will not be allowing titanium rotating assembly parts in this engine (like current engine configurations).

And to be extra clear: the Sprint Car Bandits series engine rules still have not changed for 2020, this whole project is simply a new combination that fits within the confines of the existing rules.

How much will this cost to build and about how much HP are you expecting?

323 CI, I would think this would be a little underpowered vs. the 360's. Should be an affordable option though and maybe competetive on a smaller or slick track.

The core team team that is building this engine is factoring in all the parameters of the Series and their goal is to find the right balance - all while not spending a ton of money to do it. 

And if that objective is met, it will help a lot more drivers needing an affordable engine platform a way to either get on track - or stay on track.

It's going to be exciting for sure. Stay tuned as March will be here before we all know it.
