|
Are the Outlaw (and All star) officials considered full-time, year-round help? If so, what do they do during the off season? Take Johny Gibson for instance, or Blake Anderson. Do they just head home and hang out? What about the other traveling officials? I know it isn't an earth shattering topic, but I was just curious.

The majority of the WoO officials are "full time" salaried positions. As far as what we do in the "off season", I can only speak for myself: Though I'm not traveling/calling races, there are still things to be done, and I'm considered "on call" even though I'm not in the office in Concord, NC. For instance, I could get a call saying "we just sent you a script for an ad--we need you to record it and email it back to us this afternoon", or "You need to call in to this radio show at 6pm Tuesday" or "You need to go to this city for a press conference announcing a date at this track" (all of which I've done in the past). I also use the "off season" to update my database, etc. Not saying I'm doing something race-related every day, but not "off" for 3 months either. Think of it as KIND OF like a teacher. (Having some "time off" is also the "reward" for spending 200+ nights "on the road" during the race season.) Also, since I'm now "full time" in the motorhome, I'll most likely get to Volusia in early to mid January, and there is always plenty to do there to get ready for DIRTcar Nationals. (That's especially true this year with the new grandstands/tower, etc.)

The "off-season" is plenty busy for me. Im in the office every day working on stuff for next year. I also help out with Tony's online store (TonyStewartStore.com, shameless plug). Plenty to be done haha. We've got some exciting announcements in the works for ASCoC this winter so thats keeping all of us pretty busy.

No trip to Australia this year Johnny? Wish a New Zealand promoter would bring you down so you could show some of our commentators where the international standard is at.
One of the highlights of making a racing trip to the USA is the standard of commentary at race tracks. No matter where I've been your commentators are knowledgeable and add something to the on track action.

So the WoO officials live in Charlotte, along with yourself? And Blake, I assume you and th All-Star officials live in Indianapolis and work from there? Interesting stuff.

No--the majority of the WoO full-time officials DON'T live in Charlotte (though a few do). We're not required to be in the office on a daily basis during the "off season". I lived in the Minneapolis area until 3 years ago when I decided it made more sense financially to live in the motorhome year round. But there are still things that need to be done from "home" between World Finals and DIRTcar Nationals. And we're sometimes required to be in the Charlotte office for a few days or more even while living elsewhere.

I'm the only ASCoC official that lives in Indianapolis. The rest live in Ohio/Pennsylvania.

So is either series looking for an official who has experence with a traveling series and is ready to travel again?

So obviously some behind the scenes work has been done to secure the new WOO and Ascoc sponsors proving that not all of the officials take the winter months off.
I have full respect for Mr. Gibson and admire his style, passion and longevity. He does a great job BUT will he twist the new name for the dash before the year is out, how many times and how bad?
While I know someone is out there waiting for an opportunity to insult my intelligence or Canadian drawl I have to admit that I can barely say it slow. Good luck Mr. Gibson!!
