DILLON RUML PERFECT @ INDUSTRY SPEEDWAY - By Tim Kennedy

Industry, CA., Jul. 11 – Dillon Ruml was perfect on his 500cc Jawa Wednesday at Industry Speedway. He was the only first division rider who scored a perfect nine points by winning all three of his heat races. Then he won his semi-final and the main event in front of more than 600 spectators. The Huntington Beach resident led every lap in all five of his rides and became the first repeat feature winner at Industry in week six of 14.

As high-point rider, Ruml selected the inside (pole position) for the feature. Tim Gomez, Jimmy Fishback III, and Russell Green were to his right with current Nor Cal resident Green next to the crash-wall. All three main event riders scored eight points during heat races for the 12 D-1 riders present. Event one of 32 started competition at 7:30 pm.

Gomez arrived at turn one slightly behind Ruml and pressed him all four laps before scoring his best 2018 Industry finish—second. He was three lengths in back of Ruml. Fishback was one length behind Hesperia resident Gomez when starter Tom Fox waved the checkered flag. Green was five lengths in back of Fishback.

Ruml won the first semi-final over Green with Bobby Schwartz and Michael Wells third and fourth. Gomez won the second semi-final in another flag-to-flag run over Fishback. Third was Jason Ramirez, who rearranged his work schedule to race on a Wednesday for the first time this season. Joe Donaldson was fourth. Aaron Fox, the June 27 feature winner, was present but departed prior to the 7:20 rider introductions. Donaldson moved from D-2 to D-1 for the evening to replace Fox.

The D-1 consolation race from third and fourth place semi-final finishers went to Ramirez. He edged charging Schwartz, Wells and Donaldson. Earlier, Schwartz, 61, spoke from the announcing booth over the track PA system. He revealed he has been racing speedway for 45 years.

SIDECARS: Four 1,000cc sidecar teams ran a pair of heat races and a main event. The Dillon Osborne/Ashley Gibbons No. 64 team won both heats impressively. They led all four laps in event six. They used inside passes and came from third to second on lap 2 and then led the final two laps of event 13. Joe Jones/Tom Summers started on the pole and led all four laps of the feature. Osborne/Gibbons were a close second on lap 4 when they pulled into the infield with engine failure

Paraplegic driver Bryan Motis and his replacement swing-man Russell Green placed second. Green, a D-1 500cc rider, was pressed into service. Motis received a phone call Tuesday from his regular sidecar swinger, Blake Cronkrite, saying he could not be at Industry Wednesday. Green ended the evening with a nasty-looking gash on the back of his right hand after contact with another sidecar during a race. The father/son team of Ace and Kevin Kale took third place with the exit of the Osborne/Gibbons rig in the final turn.

SUPPORT DIVISIONS:

With seven 500cc D-2 (intermediate skill level) riders present, Rudy Laurer won both heats on his Jawa 897. The Gardena resident then led every lap of the D-2 main from pole position. It was his third consecutive triumph at Industry. Hayley Perrasult, 20, was a close second on her No. 170. Nor Cal visitor Lawrence McNutt placed third and Mike Miller was fourth after a fall on lap 2. He remounted and soldiered on about half a lap out of third position.

Ron Davis led all the way in the second division consolation race. David Lynch, Carl Gazafy (in his first Industry appearance this season), and Brent Smith followed closely.

D-3: There were six newer 500cc pros present. All six raced in both heats and the main event. All races used handicapped starts based on experience level. Twenty-yard line starters David Newsham and Steve Brown won the heats. Dennis Osmer started the feature ten yards from the starting gate and led every lap. Following were: Brown, Kevin Fiore, and Newsham. Non-finishers Kevin Fife and Greg Willis pulled into the infield with engine problems.

JUNIORS:

Only two 250cc junior division riders competed. “Lightning” Luke Whitcomb, 12, beat Andrew Russell in both heat races and the main event.

Six mini 150cc riders raced a pair of handicapped five-lap heats with one rider at the starting gate, three at the 10-yard stripe, and two (Travis Horn and Owen Williams) at the 30-yard line. Horn won the first heat after leading the final two laps. Visitor Nick Hohlbein, a 9-year old from Auburn, led every lap of heat two from the zero yard line.

Hohlbein duplicated his heat victory in the main by leading all five laps from the starting gate and holding off Horn for his first Industry main P. 1 trophy. Horn, Jose Navarette, Levi Leutz, Gordon Teuber III, and Williams followed in that order.

PIT NOTES:

   > So Cal speedway riders in Europe have done well recently Industry Racing Director Kelly Inman reported. Broc Nicol is scoring double digit points in the British League. Max Ruml won the Caldonian Riders Championship last weekend. Gino Manzares is scoring points for his team. Nor Cal star Luke Becker signed with Polish and Swedish teams. Some local fans sponsored them by paying for new rear tires or for entry fees.

   > Tim Gomez, 29, tried hard to make it six different winners in the first six Wednesday nights of Industry Speedway racing. He gave his No. 30 Stuha frame/GM engine bike solid rides in all five of his races with finishes of second, first, first, first and second in that order. Only Ruml topped him.

   > Gomez picked the right night to record his best result. The riders purse was increased by $644. by generous Jan Quackenbush, of Jan's Towing in Glendora. He gave all of his half share of the weekly drawing to the four 500cc D-1 main riders. The bonus split is 40%, 30%, 20% and 10% to the P 1-4 riders in the feature. They split a season-high $1,288 this week.

   > With the ongoing So Cal heat wave and smoke from fires in various parts of the south-land, track PA announcer Bruce Flanders was absent this week. Terry “Ike” Clanton, the long-time Costa Mesa Speedway track announcer, filled in for Bruce for the second time this season. .

   > Upcoming Industry races on July 18 and 25 will have all divisions and sidecars in action. The popular annual Legends and Heroes of Speedway Racing night will be August 1.

   > The AMA Speedway National Championship round four of five will be Saturday, August 11, so there will be no racing Wednesday, August 8. The AMA/FIM Junior Speedway Silver Cup Championship will be Sunday afternoon, August 12 with free admission for fans.

Additionally, Wally Panratz will have his two USAC Ford Focus midgets on the eighth-mile dirt track for demo runs with drivers TBD later. The annual Laidlaw's Harley-Davidson Night will be August 22. The final night of season 15 will be August 25 with the 43rd annual AMA California State Championship the main attraction.
