They're making it a dirt track and adding an NHRA sanction drag strip called Kansas City International Raceway. The whole complex will become known as I-70 Motorsports Park.

I passed this place about a month ago...looked to be in sad shape.

Good to see a racing facility opening instead of closing. Hopefully they make the dirt track less than a 1/2 mile. 1/3 to 4/10 max. JMO.

Actually I believe they are just covering the existing track with dirt like was done many years ago. So size & shape should remain the same.

While the news is positive, they still need to get permits.   I will believe it when I actually see cars on the track.   However this is the most substantial news on the track in ten years

Does anyone know whether this project is moving forward?

After some Google searches, I came across this video that is from October.  It is just a "procedural" hearing making sure that the track has completed all of the neccessary steps to get the zoning changed back to being used as a race track.   This hearing has to be completed before they can go foward with the hearing to actually change the zoning.  In the video they talked about some upcoming meetings in both Novemeber and December, but I could not find any thing about those meetings.    The meeting to change the zoning is going to be instresting because there were a lot of neighbors there to oppose the track at the "procedural" hearing.   I imagine at the "real" hearing it is going to be a zoo.

As I stated before, until I am sitting at the track watching cars on the track, I refuse to get excited.

By the way, the video is kind of a boring watch.

Pictures flying around today on Twitter about actually construction taking place at I-70.  Both work being done on the track surface and on the specator stands.

They had some really large equipment and a large crew doing concrete work.   If this indicates the resources that they are putting forward, we may have a new track to visit in the KC area this summer.

If you go to 4m.net, they have photos and a video of the work being done.

I was wrong. A facebook post shows the work being done. It says they are tearing up the concrete track to make a dirt track and moving in both turns to make a big 3/8 mile track out of it. But still keep it high banked. Great news!
