Riverside is definetly one of those rare places where a 360 could compete with a 410.   I believe Jeff Swindell actually beat the All Stars there with a 360.

Why is a track with a gumbo surface always a skating rink for its big races?  I appreciate a dry slick track, but if I brought a first timer to that, they would think I was nuts for raving about sprint cars.  And every time I see a big show from Riverside, that is what I see.  And I have raced on a hammer down, wheelie, bicycle, don't lift Riverside.

I went to riverside 6-8 yr ago for the WoO because of all I'd heard about how tacky, gumbo etc. it was about as tacky as a gravel road and was the biggest disappointment of any track I've been too.

I'm from Memphis originally and my uncle and his sons promoted Riverside in the summer of 1980, so I know a good bit about the place.    Riverside always had the "incredibly tacky" label, but that changed when the current owner/promoter bought the place.   For years the track had a built in sprinkler system that watered the track.   As soon as Clayton Allen bought Riverside he made huge changes, including removing that sprinkler system and using a water truck instead.   Riverside is one of the best surfaces out there if you prep it.    This guy does not do good track prep, or maybe in some cases very little track prep.

I went up there in 2008 for an All Star Race and got treated to an awful race track.   There was dust coming off of the tires during hot laps.  By feature time it looked like an asphalt track and the racing was absolutely awful.    I probably won't be going back there until someone else is running it.   I hate that, because I love the place.

In case you missed it, Ainsworth moved up one spot in that heat race with only weak cars at the back of the heat, and the 360 finished 25th in the feature.

If you out run a good driver like Donny SHATZ for

9 3/4 laps you have done something  for a local driver.

I've moved back to Memphis but I don't go to the weekly shows at West Memphis.   The 360s are only every other week at best, and the fendered classes take forever to run.  An example is the late model feature during friday's show.  I think 8 out of 20 finished.  Not good racing to me.

I have to give the current owner credit for big improvements to the facility.  It had gotten really bad.  As far as track prep for the WoO show- it was leased and  I'm sure WoO input was towards making it dry.   But in 2007 that didn't happen. I came up from Texas for that one.  There was a ton of rain the week before and there was no way it was going to be dry.  They had teams pitted in the parking lot due to all the mud.  I remember parking a few spots away from Steve Kinser's rig.  As far as the track, tacky was an understatement.  Wheelies all the way down the straights were the order of the day, and it was a blast to watch.

Daryn Pittman won that race as well on quite a different track.

I was actually at the 2007 WoO race at Riverside too and remember the track being heavy all night.   It was the following summer in 2008 that I went to the All Star race and got the awful track.   I have a cousin who was running a sprint car there and quit racing there because of horrid track conditions.   They were towing their car somewhere up in Missouri to race rather than travel 20 minutes out to Riverside.   I've seen debates about the track prep on the MidSouth forums, and some of the local racers would rather it be dry slick from what I gather.   It's just sad to me that it ain't what it used to be, but I guess there are many tracks that are like that.
