Wayne Sue's victory on September 25, 1980 at Silver Dollar was a split-field victory, therefore it is not counted on the All-Time Win List. Johnny Anderson won Night 2 on 9/26 and was not credited with a win as well. Anderson did go on to win the next night against the full-field and, thus, was awarded a victory.

We did not count any split-field races of Gold Cup or the Knoxville Nationals or any races (Devil's Bowl, Manzanita, East Bay, etc.) where the field was split.

Of course, now the Knoxville Nationals is the only event that has a split-field and the winners on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are not awarded a victory, but Saturday's winner is.

Hope that helps clear things up,

Anthony Corini

I say count all preliminary WoO feature wins.  They were woO sanctioned events with very tough fields of cars.  There must be only a few races that could be called 'split fields' anyway.  That would happen only when there were more than two nights of racing. Probably happened only 2 or 3 times a year.

A Knoxville Nat'l win on Wed or Thurs nite isn't good enough?  Sheesh.  Split field or not, only a few races during the year are any tougher, Sat nite, at the Nationals, of course, and maybe some three day shows in Pennsylvania.  The Gold Cup was a three day show for many years, but there were very few others.

Give these guys deserving credit.  It wouldn't be adding but a handful of races.  Please re-think this a bit.

The thought process behind this is to have earned a World of Outlaws win, you would have to have beaten the best in the business. Back then, that meant beating Steve, Sammy, Doug, etc. all in the same night. Now it means beating Schatz, Sweet, Gravel, etc. in one night. These guys can't run both nights at Knoxville, or both nights at Chico, they are assigned one night and must watch the other.

While winning a preliminary night of Gold Cup back then or Wednesday, Thursday or Friday at the Knoxville Nationals now is no small feat, it isn't a World of Outlaws win because not all World of Outlaws competitors were eligible to compete. They do deserve credit, but doesn't giving them an official World of Outlaws victory take away from those that have a full-field victory? Believe me; we have thought long and hard about this topic.

I think I'm going to sound really stupid here and nobody will probably agree with me, but I say give them credit even for the split field races. Knoxville Nationals is obviously the best example. These races are insanely difficult to win. So much work and time and money goes into it. The split fields at Knoxville are still two separate Great fields of cars. For god sakes of a guy goes out and wins give him credit lol. Just my 2 cents I guess lol.

I could be off my rocker here, and if I’m wrong I’m sure I will be corrected, but I don’t believe the Knoxville Nationals are World of Outlaws sanctioned. If I’m correct on this, then split fields or not, they wouldn’t be count d as World of Outlaws wins, preliminary or not. Either way I’m glad they counted the preliminary wins now.

Thankyou Johnny. I think what I got backwards is that , again correct me if wrong, WoO points for Nationals is show up points? Again I could be going senile or maybe just too much dirt in my beer over the years. Lol

Correct on show up points only.  And there were a few years (NST "split" year and a few years following ) where it WASN'T sanctioned, but has been again the past few years .

Just for knowledge purposes, is the first night of a three day show like Baylands use run counting as a win? Night 1 everyone ran, with the top 4 or 6 locked into the night 3 "A". Night 2, those who did not lock in run again, with their top 4 or 6 being locked in for Night 3. So, Night 1 winner is credited, Night 2 winner not credited and Night 3 winner is credited a win, correct?

Not sure what is right or wrong.....according to the information I have found. And I remember when Cappy made the announcement years back. The Nationals haven't been sanctioned by the WoO since 2005. The WoO did sanction the Nationals from 1978 through 2005. In 2006 the Nationals became sanctioned under the Knoxville Raceway rules. I believe the exception was 2010, the 50th running of the Nationals was sanctioned by the WoO. But....."Since 2012, the WoO name has been ASSOCIATED with the race, but the event is still operated by track officials"..... That's the info I was going by.

The event is operated under Knoxville rules, with both WoO and Knoxville officials working. The WoO awards points for the week (show-up points due to race format), therefore is a "sanctioned" event. There is WoO sponsor sinage, and I woudn't do the "four wide call" (or most likely be announcing at all) if the race was not WoO sanctioned.

As for 3 day shows that lock 4 in from each prelim night, those aren't considered "split field", and all now count as full WoO wins.  "Split field" is only when when the entire field is split in half (or thirds, as happened occasionally).
