by John Rittenoure - TULSA, Okla. (May 16, 2016) - Kip Hughes of Enid has fond memories of his last trip to Ardmore’s Southern Oklahoma Speedway and he is looking forward to reliving them when the Sooner Late Model Series on Friday night.
The Sooner Late Models opened the 2016 season on April 15 in Ardmore and Hughes was the class of the field leading start-to-finish in the late model main event.
Hughes was pressured by Shannon Scott throughout the race and the two entertained the fans as they battled for the lead.
“Shannon Scott was behind me and on a couple of restarts he would do a slide job across the bottom,” Hughes recalled.
The victory propelled Hughes into the series points lead and he holds a slim five-point margin over second place Eddie Martin coming into Friday’s event.
If Hughes can return to the winners circle he would be the first repeat winner of the season. On April 30th Randy Timms of Oklahoma City came from 12th starting position to win the main event at the Oklahoma Sports Park in Ada. Damian Patocha of Enid was the third race of the season on May 7th at Brill’s Motor Speedway in Meeker.
A total of 23 competitors were on hand for the April 15th event and more are expected on Friday.
Behind Hughes on 35 points behind Martin in the points chase is Mark Harrison third, Scott holds down fourth just five points back and Patocha trails Scott by 25 points in fifth.
