I hate that it happened and Dan Wheldon is gone, but my heart aches for his wife and 2 year old and 6 month old kids. When's daddy coming home. That's what people and drivers need to look at. The people left behind are the ones that suffer!!!!!!!!

Seen where Dallara is going to name the new car/chassis in some way to honor Dan Weldon. DW 01 or something like that.

Brake lights are cheap,,,,lives are precious,,,,thats my point. Give me 1 reason why brake lights are not worth it.

Have you ever witnessed an accident on the highway. One where one car piles into another car which hits another car. It happens allot in rush hour traffic, where gapers delays catch everyone off guard. You will note that just about every brake light in attendance goes on, and the cars hit one after another. For the most part cars on the highway are further apart than race cars, and going much slower. If folks can not always miss a wreck with a 4 car closing distance, then the likelyhood of race car drivers doing so while inches from the end of one another's car at break neck speeds is VERY slim indeed. If you have driven a race car you would most likely note that brake lights could be more of a distraction than a helper.

About 1:30 into the video you can see fuel spraying into the crowd. Nobody was killed but, several spectators were injured.

In the '87 Indianapolis 500 a wheel assembly flew over the fence and took someone out in the upper rows. It might have even been the upper deck. Those things have been going on for a long time........... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1987_Indianapolis_500............On lap 130 a wheel was struck and flew into the stands. There is not a catch fence around that might have stopped this from happening. My point here is that racing, any racing, is going to be dangerous. I remember a Crafstman Truck race with one of the Bodine's where a truck hit the fence, tore it down, and covered the spectators with debris. It is a part of racing. There are disclaimers and omissions on the back of the ticket that we use to view the event, and there are waivers of responsibility that our teams sign to compete. Racing is not safe. But that is a part of what makes it so spectacular. Example: Everyone that attended a Red Bull Air Race could have gone to the local airport to watch some of the safest aircraft fly. But they chose to watch brave pilots risk life and limb to put on a show. That is a part of the appeal, and the deal.

my point of the whole post, and guys saying he had no time to react to the wreak are just being oblivious, there wasn't brake lights ur right. JUST A BIG GIANT SMOKE CLOUD THAT HE SAW AND GOT OUT OF THE GAS ON THE ENTRY OF TURN 1 BEFORE THE INITIAL IMPACT IN THE EXIT OF 2. I will never believe he didn't have time to react and that the 220 plus mph is the reason this happened. Drivers were on the track handling race cars that shouldn't have been in the cock pit. They panic, and stabbed the brakes (like most on our roads daily), spun the cars directly sideways and acted as launching ramps for on coming cars. The new car wouldn't and wont prevent this, infact it will be easier to occur with the new curvature of the side panels. Will Power went over the rear and would have been prevented by the new cars with the addition of bumpers, but what happened to Dan Wheldon would occur on the new car, and at speeds less than 220 mph hell less than 200 they do stunt jumps at 85mph with ramps. oh and don't they freeze the fields when a crash occurs? So why would he try and speed threw the wreak?

What does "speed threw a wreak" mean??????????

Lets see how it works,,,if you push the brake pedal down a light comes on in the back of your car,,if you dont have brake lights you have NOTHING . Its really simple ,,now whether anyone cares behind you its their own choice. But no one has giving me a reason why not to have brake lights!! If brake lights are not good why do the auto makers waste the money on them?? If anyone is riding the Brakes its slowing them down,,period. I want 1 good reason why not brake lights?

You've had numerous good reasons.....The reason cars have brake lights is because your government requires them. Are you old enough to remember cars without the third brake light? The third light wasn't put on because Detroit wanted too...

Ok, here is one. When you are driving a race car you are not supposed to be looking directly in front of you. If you are watching the car that is 3 feet in front of you, you are more apt to slam into an accident well after it has occurred more than 300 feet in front of the guy that you are following. When you are driving a race car you are concentrating sometimes hundreds to thousands of feet up the track. The faster you go the further ahead you need to be looking. In many cases the car in front of you is an afterthought(and I know that there are examples otherwise). Now, do you really want the added distraction of flashing lights in your forward field of vision. Drivers are looking at: flagman, track lights, dash lights, gauges, track conditions, other cars, to name a few. They do not have the time at the speeds that they are travelling to concentrate on brake lights. They would be an unnecessary distraction, one that may cause even more accidents. I know that I for one would rather drive the car without them.

Stop with the brake lights already. Drivers use brakes to negotiate the corner regularly. The drivers will ignore the lights pretty quickly or you'll have "accordion affect" accidents in every corner. So please drop it.

Damn ... 100 posts and still on the racing should be safer deal ... ??? Racing is a very dangerous sport ... and like it or not (and I'm SURE most of us = not) VERY bad things happen -- thankfully a LOT less often than used to be. But the unthinkable still happens. The deal with Wheldon was one of the unthinkables... but quite frankly each time I've watched an IRL race (including the first one at Texas in person) I was afraid such a deal would happen. Thankfully it hasn't happened more often... VERY thankful... but the unthinkable can happen at ANY race no matter the venue or series. One can only be hopeful that it won't happen again too soon ... but knowing our sport of choice -- it likely will - but again hopefully not too soon ... but when it does I'm sure the outcome will be similarly very difficult to deal with.......
