Ole Bessy, aka my hundred-year-old laptop, gave up the ghost recently. RIP Bessy. Getting a new laptop, so I thought with that I'd join one of the streaming race service you folks use for watching races.

Is there one that would give me the WoO, ASoC, USAC, and other races in a monthly package? Or am I going to have to join several seperate ones to get that?

What service (site?) does everyone use?

Thanks!

One more dumb question - will a cheaper Chromebook work for streaming races on my TV, or do I need to buy a more-expensive laptop?

(Note: I do have a smart TV, but it can't handle a live-streamed race....I've tried)

WoO - dirtvision $39.99 per month gets live ppv of all WoO sprint races

ASCOC - speedshift.tv has a $39.99 per month that includes most (not all) ASCOC races

USAC - floracing has a package at $150 per year for all USAC sprint, midget & silver crown.  floracing also has some big block mods & other stuff included in that same price.  They also just bought out dirtondirt.com so I suspect they will be getting more heavily into the dirt late model coverage going forward.  Price would go up I'm sure.

I currently have dirtivision fast pass & floracing.  Have used speedshift in the past as well.  Pleased with all of them.  Some have complained about floracing stream issues.  I have not had much issue with it.  Works pretty good for me.

A Chromebook would work fine -- it's essentially a regular computer that can only use the chrome web browser instead of having the rest of the operating system. Since you access the streaming services via web browser you would be all good to use it to stream, and in general just browse the web.

As far as streaming goes, I'd recommend Speedshift if you can only get one. They have the vast majority of ASCOC races, as well as Jackson, Kokomo, Port and Lincoln weekly races, Powri Midgets, and WAR Sprints. In addition you get access to the on-demand section which posts full broadcasts within hours of them finishing for most West Coast 360 races, including SCCT. Speedshift also broadcasts a lot of unsanctioned stuff.

Floracing is the worst PPV provider IMO, although they have all of USAC. But as far as quality of the broadcast/stream its bad compared to DV and Speedshift. Although it is watchable, I've just had consistent buffering issues with them, and also less on screen featured (the broadcast seemed lower budget). Full disclosure I have not had Floracing since February so they may have improved.

Dirtvision is probably the best quality wise, but you just get WoO races so its definitely a quality over quantity situation there.

You can also get The Cushion which features races from BAPS, and Selinsgrove for $14.99/mo but the Selinsgrove season is all but over. I also don't think their interface is as simple as the other three, coming from the angle of teaching my grandfather how to use the internet. For the average person that knows computers well they are all pretty simple.

Thanks,

Jeff.

DirtVision is the best quality feed and production.

Floracing has USAC and dirt modifieds which is a win for me.

I subscribed to Speedshift in July and got pa Speedweeks and a lot of all star shows. They piss me off because they’ll occasionally not broadcast a scheduled show because the promoter balks (Floracing sometimes does this too) but the value is still there for $40

Buy a Firestick and download internet browser app and then you will not even need a laptop.  Then you will also have it on your actual TV and not watching on the small laptop screen.

I know some people who do that and it works well, I use a laptop and just hook it up via HDMI to my TV without issue. I never watch on the laptop screen.

This is addressing your comment about having a Smart TV but not being able to live stream a race. I've only used Dirtvision but I understood that no Smart TV could handle these live streams directly because they don't come equipped with the proper software. You have to use another source like a phone or computer to get the feed.  You can then connect one of those to your TV. If you get a new laptop you can connect an HDMI to the laptop and the TV to broadcast onto the TV. No need to watch on a small computer screen when you have a perfectly good TV. I believe the TV is only acting as a screen and the computer is doing all the hard work. Surely somebody knows more about this end so please chime in. Just putting this out there too. I have a Samsung Galaxy S9 phone and that's what I hook up to my TV. It required a USB C to HDMI adapter (under $20) which is then connected to a regular HDMI to plug into the back of the TV. Works like a champ and it's just easier for my particular situation.

I do the same.

I currently use Dirtvision and it is excellent quality, but I've watched only about a third of the races because on the weekends I'm usually at a track or busy doing something else.

Another question is do you have good enough internet service to actually stream?  It takes decent speed for it to be watchable.  All the equipment in the world won't do any good if you don't have the service to support it.

I was unaware that a smart tv can't handle live streams, hmmm. I've used my laptop to TV with hdmi and chrome cast. A few times I've had issues with no volume.

First, thanks to all of you for your thoughts/suggestions.

Ya, I have AT&T. I can stream Netflix, Amazon, etc just fine.  But I've tried single races on it, and it didn't work.

Check out the technical faqs section of the Dirtvision website. I believe Speedshift is similar. Even with a smart tv you still have to have another device to receive the broadcast and have to connect that device to the tv.  Obviously the TV's aren't as smart as their name suggests.

I know you have said you live in Ohio, not sure where abouts but, I bought mine at Micro center and at the time it was a referbished one back in 2014. I told the tech person that I just needed it for some work needs (office) and streaming ppv events. At the time The Cushion had ppv & speed51 so I showed the person on my phone what type of requirements I needed. Was able to get a pretty good one for under $300 at the time

I’d echo the suggestion to get a fire stick.  I have had one for a year plus.  Have streamed races from several different services and the internet browser app on fire stick worked for all of them.

I do the same laptop/tv setup, but I have a minor issue. The volume came from the TV initially, but for the last year I have to get it from the laptop. Any ideas?

Yup, my TV is a Samsung as well.

So you are saying you have ran a coaxial cable from your router/modem into your TV? That would be a lot cheaper for me than buying a new laptop.

The one race I did try using just my smart tv was the intitial running of the big Mansfield sprint car race a few years ago. Tried Speedshift for it. When it didn't work, I called their tech support and they said some smart tvs can't handle streamed races. They were great - not Speedshift's fault certainly.

Nick- yea I live in Dayton.

W2 - thanks for the great info on Chromebooks

And thanks again to everyone who has responded.

You just need to set the default audio device. It probably reset after a windows update or something. You should be able to right click the "speaker" icon on the bottom right of your screen and open your sound settings and the option to change the default device should be in there.

I agonized over connectivity issues with my Roku TV and used to haul my wife's laptop down the the man cave because it has HDMI out.  That was a hassle and she had valid concerns about me carrying it back up to her Zen Zen after a few beers.

Someone suggested the Fire Stick and it was the best $30 I ever spent.  Roku has still not made a browser available and the streaming services have been slow to add Roku apps.  A $30 Fire Stick is the way to go and I wish I'd have shut up and listened sooner and spared myself some trouble.

My streaming has mostly been with Speedshift which seems to provide the content that interests me the most.  I've got IMCA TV comped to me for evaluation of the Roku app and it's a good quality service but Sprint fans might not care for the IMCA Stock Car and Modified racing.   I have had Dirtvision and found out that the Outlaws run a lot more 18 and 20 car shows than I was aware of.  Mostly I use them for an occasional Knoxville weekly show as I'm six hours from Knoxville and follow the progress of some local drivers.

One thing I'm finding is that some of my racing friends are anti PPV and have this attitude that PPV shouldn't even be an option.  As a retired person on a fixed income who can't see as well at night and has to travel alone PPV is keeping me connected to the sport.  If PPV goes away or gets priced beyond my reach that will make it difficult to follow Sprint Car racing and it would eventually become a case of "out of sight, out of mind" and they'd lose another life long fan.
