After seeing video of Danny Dietrich's crash at Knoxville, seems like those banners on the fence could be pretty dangerous.

Freak accidents are referred to as freaky for a reason...that designation is usually applied to situations nobody would have foreseen.  Someone pointed out that the plastic type material could catch fire and make it harder to put out as it would become molten plastic in a fire.  If that stuff wrapped up against a driver's suit I could see where it might be a problem.  The Knoxville safety crew has a reputation as one of the best in the business so at least we know they'll be right on top of the crash as soon as it's safe to approach the car.  It's one of those things where they could rip them down 10,000 times and one time there could be unexpected results.  I saw a social media post where someone brought this up and he got ripped about 100 times the last I checked.  I'm not understanding why people would be so nasty to someone who is concerned about safety but I get that the scenario of a banner wrapping around a car and melting before they can put it out are very low.  On the other hand, I'd never ridicule anyone for being concerned about driver safety.  I think this is a valid concern but a very remote possibility.  Events like the Nationals draw tons of sponsors banners so I don't think that signage is going away anytime soon so I'm throwing my lot in with the safety crew getting there on time and putting out the fires.

It was a freak accident that I don't think anyone could've forseen. Now that we have seen what can happen, what will be done? This is Knoxville so I'll guarantee they don't just sit on their thumbs until something terrible happens like a lot of other tracks do. They'll come up with a better way. I never would've thought about it but after seeing that wreck, it's definitely a valid concern.

If you have Twitter, look up Danny Dietrich. That's where I saw the video. The car came to rest upside down with the banner half wrapped around the cage.

That's not a freak deal, that's an entrapment risk.  They are low enough on the wall that they can get pulled loose and get wrapped around a car spinning itself along the wall.  Can you imagine the car catching on fire and not being able to get yourself out of the car because you're wrapped up with a banner???  Fuck that.....

That is as much of a freak deal as Jason Johnson slamming into a bill board or Greg Hodnett finding a pit wall opening.

I don't know if I agree with all that. Jason was killed in a similar fashion that another driver (forget his name) was a few years prior....nothing was done until Jason's accident. Greg hit a pit opening that both Blane Heimbach and Logan Wagner hit previously. Heimbach hit it pretty hard and Logan flat out cheated death....nothing was done until Greg was killed. To my knowledge, Dietrich's wreck last night was the first that anything happened like that and luckily, the worst case scenario was avoided. I totally agree that those banners pose a significant hazard in many ways. Like I said, now they know what can happen. That was the wake up call. Far too often in our sport, wake up calls are left to go to voicemail and then forgotten. When it comes to safety, Knoxville has lead the way in sprint car racing and in many respects, they've lapped the field. I'm sure they'll do something different from now on. Some other tracks wouldn't but Knoxville isn't like other tracks. They're the gold standard that every other track is measured by.
