Had this blast from the past the other day....
Billy Pauch - a racer's racer. Won in just about everything he drove. What stands-out for me was his "world" record at the Syracuse Mile - 144 mph lap, with, as I recall, the end of straight speed of 175 - 178, in a freaking Sprint Car!
Does that record still stand?

"The car felt anything but comfortable" - I bet. It wasn't really comfortable to watch Sprint Cars going that fast on that narrow old horse track but it sure was exciting - literally sit on the edge of your seat for every lap exciting. The one race I looked forward to for a year and then was glad when it was over and nobody got hurt - or worse....
While most of his wins were in modifieds, he had many, big sprint car wins. I think he earned a spot in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame - if nothing else but for having the biggest of the big cahonies

Billy's one of the best dirt track racers ever, in any type of car. Along with the Zemco car, I also remember him winning sprint races in the J&M 55 and that red #7, maybe others while he was only doing sprints part time. Still racing but not winning as much as he used to. The man is a legend. As for Syracuse, exciting I guess if you speed was the only factor but not much for the racing. It's a good thing they don;'t race there anymore.

I'll never forget his last sprint car win back in 2006 at Grandview. Greg Hodnett was out with a leg injury and he filled in for the night in Al Hamilton's #77. He hadn't turned a competitive lap in a sprint car for at least a couple of years yet he started 9th and took the lead on the final lap to take the win. He was as good as anyone behind the wheel of a sprint car. He would've had some big numbers if he'd made sprint cars his primary focus.

A great racer but an equal instructor? Our plant manager asked me to take our maintenance departmenti men to Grandview in the early 2000s for a day of driving a sprint car. Billy had a school with a street stock fitted with a passenger seat and (2) ex black #1 sprinters. He had class on the bleachers while his father demonstrated the line to drive in the street stock. The next 20 laps were completed with each student with Billy instructing to put rubber on the track while learning the line. Then each student did 10 laps in a sprinter. Father Pauch and young son refueled and readied the next sprinter for the next student. Mrs Pauch and young daughter assisted with the driving suits, safety gear and video if student provided camera. Afterward certificates and Pauch driving school tee shirts were provided.
Everyone went home with an appreciation and a big smile for the personal instruction they had received that day from Billy.

Syracuse Mile or Grandview bullring...... car he'd been in all year, or just stepped into an hour ago.....
As good as anyone to ever wheel a sprint car - especially when you narrow it down to number of sprint car starts and finishes.
Plant manager sent the maintenance department to the driving school for a day! Now that's my kinda Plant Manager!

A ittle story to go along with this race. When Billy showed up to the track the owner told him dont worry about wrecking the car, I dont care if you wreck, drve it as hard as it will allow you too. When Billy won the owner was so ecstatic he told Billy to keep the entire check and this win meant so much to me that the money is all yours.

Billy was the man and could drive the wheels off of modifeds or a sprint car! I seen him win many times in both classes and was thier at Cuse when he set the record and another win of his I recall is when he smoked the field by a half lap at williams grove in a 2nd zemco car one friday nite many years back! A great post that hopefully the website politicians wont hijack!!lol

I have watched Billy Pauch since 1978, I grew up 15 miles from Flemington Speedway. From the first time Billy was able to drive a Race Car in NJ every person that saw him fir the first time in a Late model knew he was special.
Billy has driven so many different Race Cars and he has succedded in every one. Billy was Born either to early or to late though. He was born to late to be offered an Indy Car ride and too early to be offered a NASCAR Ride, even though he did drive a NASCRAP Truck at Flemington and Pocono for a local guy. Its too bad because I kind of feel Billy would have Succedded in either race format

I recently watched a good video of his 2019 Bridgeport season. It was interesting because he said he used the small block for the big track and the big block for the small track.
